Lots of people do call spaghetti noodles and sake rice wine though. Bad argument. Umami means savory in English. Therefore there is no reason to use it in English other than being a pretentious weeb or an obnoxious foodie.

Well you have answered my question to agree with me exactly. Savory is a category and group of flavors. Umami is the precise flavors made by exaxt compounds. Just like sugar creates the sensation of sweetness, glutamate creates the sensation of umami. Some foods that are savory may not be umami, but when we say a food is umami we know exactly that it contains high levels of glutamate and/or the other umami compounds. We say spaghetti or sake instead of noodles or rice wine to add precision to our communication. Already starting with the ad hom and terrible "because I say so" arguments, pretty funny.

Part of what is so useful about umami being adopted into English is that it's a whole new description of a different taste so both can be unique and precise in their own ways. It's the glory of English.

Wrong. It is the name of the fifth primary taste. The umami receptors on your tongue get stimulated by glutamate, inosinate, guanylate and a few other more niche ribonucleotides. The word describes the taste/sensation from these specific taste receptors.

The word has been adopted world wide to mean this.

We are also talking about an english word adopted from the Japanese. You know like spaghetti or karaoke? Karaoke translates literally to empty orchestra according to google. We have adopted the word to mean something different and specific in english! Pretty cool how languages can evolve right?

>The word has been adopted world wide to mean this
But that isn't even remotely true. Africans don't use the word umami. Latin Americans don't use the word umami. It seems like when you say the whole world has adopted the word umami you mean Japan, and English speaking western nations. That's an extreme global minority in case you weren't aware.

Sweet and savoury is an impossible flavour combination. Anything sweet is not savoury by default. To say otherwise highlights the point which is that you have no idea what English words mean and how they are used.

Either way, cheesecake, bacon and pancakes, a peanut butter sandwich, baklava etc are undeniably very umami based foods and no one ever, ever would refer to them as savoury. There is no debate here, the definitions are clear and they are different. You only keep dragging this through the mud out of disingenuous trolling and an attempt to mangle my language. You're pathetic.
