For chains, it's my local Safeways and Acmes. I don't know what it is but there's something about Acmes in South Jersey and the Delaware Valley (and Safeways in Delaware itself) that they just 'get' subs/hoagies. No supermarket or chain place compares and I don't know why.

Instead of squeezing the sammich like a caveman with you hands and mouth, deftly hold it not too gently, no too hard, and bite into by pulling bites away instead of crushing it.

Not her, but it's called scooping and it's extremely common literally everywhere in the US. You slice the roll in half/butterfly the roll and scoop out some of the crumb. It's particularly useful for goopy fillings like tuna/chicken salad but lotsa places do it just to fit more meat etc in there. If done properly, you wouldn't even notice it was done at all because the sandwich gets compressed as it's wrapped up for sale.

I'm in Seattle, so I suppose if I gave the driver a decent tip of, let's say, $20, everything should be kosher. I always tip $20 for good service. $10 for bad service, $30 for excellent service, and $0.02 for terrible service.

>>21427020
You know not really. Pic is my most recent one. There has been something of an annoying supply issue which has made it difficult for me to gather all the ingredients efficiently (basically my supermarket has switched their grocery deliveries from a central warehouse which does not offer sliced delly meats. so my option is to go shopping in person or order the cheap horrible pre-packaged meats which I fucking refuse to buy because they suck). I've been working 10-12 hours a day since January trying to get a major product across the finish line, so I've been relying on deliveries rather than getting to the shops.

Anyway, that concludes this balanced blogpost but enjoy my last (but not forever) pair of grindahs

Quizzys was goated, nearly all their subs were amazing, French dip, peppercorn steak, chicken carbonara, Italian..., I used to take like 5 containers of the red wine vinaigrette every time.
Short story is corporate got way too cocky thinking they would take over the world, took on way too much debt, couldn't deliver, filed bankruptcy, tried to recover by rebranding but put all the costs on the franchisees, then they all fucked off once their margins weren't feasable. Now they're dead, rip in toasty peace

I'm gonna post about it in the Philly thread but when I lived in Philadelphia, specifically a part of town which at the time lacked street lighting or indeed any neighbours at all (my apartment was literally the only residential spot anywhere for at least two blocks, surrounded by warehouse and crumbling former factories), there was an abandoned subway station about three or four blocks north of me. You could access it if you went through a specific, not-often-used subway line, the Broad-Ridge Spur (so called because it "spurred" off of its normal route of just going up and down Broad Street and under Ridge Avenue, ending in Chinatown; I lived just north of Chinatown at the time). The Spur used to stop there but since literally no one lived in my area anymore but me and the factories were abandoned, the station was costlier to keep open than otherwise so they boarded up all entrances. There are a few other abandoned subway stations and tunnels but the only one I've ever managed to get to was the one I lived near. No mole people, though.

I went to one of those once, staffed by an elderly husband and wife, and when I came in and ordered, the wife had to go get the husband to make my sandwich, and he acted all annoyed that he had to make a sandwich, and the whole time the wife was walking around us loudly vacuuming. The sandwich itself was 2/10 at best. The rest of the store was a "grocery" consisting of the exact same Sclafani canned products that they sell at the supermarket down the street, but probably half expired at a 200% markup.

Maybe the old man wasn't greasy enough?

No. The best thing is to go to local bakery in the north east. You have to go to an old bakery run by third generation immigrants though, don't go to any of the foodie artisan bakeries. Artisan bakeries usually have good bread, but it isn't grindah bread. The bread is probably the most critical part of the grindah to get right. Subpar bread will ruin a grindah even if the interior ingredients are good. If you don't have access to a bakery, a lot of supermarkets sell subpar sub rolls although some supermarkets do stock bread from local bakeries. Burn local if you can. I think you might be able to buy bread from chain sub shops if you ask nicely. Other than making your own, I think that covers it.

That isn't true. There are some truly awful filth pits of mom and pop sub shops. A lot of halal people took over sub shops from the children/grandchildren of the Italian and other Euros immigrants who opened the shops. Unfortunately, a lot of the halal people have no idea what a sub is or how to make one.

This is true, sorta. Not necessarily halal but certainly some sort of brown from "over there."
Several places in the Philadelphia area all went to Indian owners, weirdly almost always Gujaratis. Gujaratis are the Indian subtype most likely to be vegetarian. In fact, while I'm sure they exist, I have never met a Gujarati who wasn't veg. Or, at least, wasn't mostly veg. I know one guy who eats chicken outside of the house when his wife isn't around but won't eat any other meat.
Anyway, so they bought several of the hoagie shops once Mom and Dad got too old to run them and the kids didn't want to do it and they justโ€ฆ run them into the ground. I honestly don't know what they're doing, but without the old greaseballs running them, people just kinda stop going so every time an Indian takes over, it's guaranteed the place will fail.
Halal types take over pizza and cheesesteak places, swapping out the pepperoni for beef, the ham for turkey ham, the bacon for turkey or beef bacon etc.
>>21451828
Nah, bruh. I've had some absolute shit sandwiches from those sorts of places.

That only happens when it's not a deli. Chinese places become Indian takeout. Italian places become Indian dine in. One family from near Udupi took over an Old Country Buffet and ran it as a South Indian buffet. Being that most Americans are entirely unfamiliar with South Indian food, never mind that of Udupi in particular, they failed miserably. Pity, too, since that buffet was absolute tits. Their tomato saar (yes, that is the actual name of the dish lmao) was really fucking good. That's just the Udupi name for rasam. And despite them being from Udupi and therefore likely vegetarians, they had a lot of Mangalorean seafood dishes, which confused the fuck out of most people unaware that yes: Indians eat seafood. They had this steamed fish on the buffet in a mustard-based curry that has that two-heats thing going on with the nasal mustard-hot and the throat chilli hot.
Sorry to blog, I just really fucking miss that place

That's cute, I miss the days when a little naive cultural appropriation was acceptable, even celebrated in this country. Do they dress like Guy Fieri, and play shitty japanese "hip-hop" on the stereo, and immediately latch onto any white customer as an excuse to practice unintelligible engrish?

>Maybe I should give them another try.
Or maybe not. It is not generally known that nips can't into bread or cheese? (Although they certainly have their fair share of larping westaboos who try.) You should look for a deli with an itamae who spent 10 years cleaning the toilet at a greasy dank Jersey Shore sub shop, before he was even allowed to touch the nitrated pork loaf.

No, theyโ€™re pretty cool, the bread just sucked. In terms of the โ€œcultural appropriationโ€ no one here gives a fuck about that. In the US, seems like things are changing. I lived in Portland, OR for years, and some skank who wanted to open a Asian colonial restaurant was practically run out of town a few years back. Now, there are some white dudes who are opening the same sort of concept, but Burmese, and plebbit and the papers there are loving it. Go figure.

First post best post.

You make the best sandwiches because all the shit fast food ones have cut all the corners to make it as cheap as possible for them. Old ass veggies, cheapest deli meat possible, limited options, and of course shit is drenched in corn syrup to hide the fact it's shit.

So ANY sandwich you make at home, especially cold subs, will beat the pants off fast food because you will use better quality food to make it.

Zoomers are completely fucked in the head because of the lockdowns. They have no idea how to socialize and the entire booze industry is predicated on people choosing to go out and have a couple drinkypoos. I know a few professors and they all say the same thing about the college kids at this point
>they don't talk in class
>none of them drink
>none of them go out on the weekends
>none of them come in with hangovers
>they don't date (research also says they're not fucking, either, lmao)
>they just sit on their phones and have no idea how to hold a conversation, make eye contact

I feel genuinely bad. There is an entire generation of people who are completely stunted. I hear it's even worse for kids who were still in gradeschool in 2020. It just feels like the vid accelerated the direction we were going in which is just further isolation of the individual from the community at large. I'm not even chuddy, it's just super obvious at this point that we need a concerted effort to resocialize an entire generation or we'll never get to drink la chouffe or a good french wine AGAIN and I can't handle that reality.

ther are absurd amounts of unspoken rules and manners in east asian cultures, it's why they were so compliant and sweeping with massive lockdowns. If anything it affected them far less than the west because our society is more introverted and social in general.

I live in Kalispell, Montana and we somehow managed to get a Jersey Mike's 2 years ago. I'm from FL and Cherry Pepper Relish literally just doesn't exist here. Watching the locals learn what it is in real time as they have it on a sub is amusing. These yokels have zero clue as to how a sub that isn't from Subway tastes lol

Similar story where I live in OR. I used to get it from a local Italian deli when I lived in another state, but I don't think there's a single one of those (an actual deli, not a sandwich shop) in all of Oregon. I broke down and bought a jar of it from Jersey Mike's because it was the only thing I could find.
