How the fuck do people buy groceries without a car? I lost my license and now I've been eating nothing but delivery for the past week. Am I supposed to just go with 2 bags and a backpack and squeeze myself in a bus for an hour? Is this how people without a car live like? How do the NEETs do it?

Grocery delivery services exist. In a pinch you could actually take an Uber or something to/from the store. Not sure how they feel about that though, I know when I worked at a grocer that taxi drivers HATED picking up fares from a grocery store.

How’d you lose the license? Alcohol, drugs, or plain ol’ shit driving?

I haven’t used it since covid but I recall Amazon Fresh delivered pricing was reasonable, although it was a bit risky with produce. I think you can get food delivered pretty quickly from Walmart.

What do you normally eat? Someone totaled my car and I only had a bike for six months, there was a grocery store about 10 minutes by bike from me and I’d get a few bags worth of food and hang them from the handlebars on the ride home

Generally backpack, yes. I have a big ass chrome bag if I'm shopping in anger, but my cute liddle jansport bag does the trick for daily trips. Used to use my ortliebs when I had a steel clunker but I got rid of it because after I upgraded to a crabon bike I just started using citi bike for the clunker trips

Simply living in a walkable town helps, though I think OP may be a burger which makes things more complicated because America is pretty car centric and sprawling. In that case I would just use the delivery service, all supermarkets have them even here.

I haven’t had a car for a while and this is what I do. If I’m doing a big load I’ll walk to the store. It’s about 2 miles, then uber back.

Get used to walking around and meal planning. Avoid places like CVS for little things because their prices are shit. Cheese and bread are calorie dense and travel well. Always buy one or two stock up items with your perishables. Like a bag or rice or beans. Hunger is a great motivator and walking is good for letting your mind wander.

Sorry to disappoint, but I'm European and I live at a coast. We walk.
I've never had a car or a license. At the beginning of the month I go to the store and buy all my core food items: cans of chicken, pasta sauce, pasta, rice, beans, cheese, flour, butter, root vegetables, and maybe a few other things.
If I want fresh meat or vegetables I go buy them the day I plan on using them, or the day before.
If I want a drink or a snack I walk to the store and buy it the day of.
The grocery store is only about a mile away from my house. That's where I buy all my actual groceries. If I want a snack, I'll walk the 6 blocks to the convenience store.

This time of year it's really nice so I like walking. In the winter time I might take the bus, but only if it's raining. If it's snow, I'll walk. I only ever take the bus if it's raining, and only if I plan on getting at least two bags of groceries. If it's only one bag, I'll just take my umbrella.

The grocery store is a 5 minute walk away from me, I just go frequently and buy a few things at a time. I always try to live close to a store. Only once was I so far away I had to take a bus, and it was inconvenient, but yeah I basically did exactly that (take a few bags and sit on the bus). It's not ideal but if you plan well you can make it work.

Another thing to consider is grocery delivery. There are apps like instacart. Surely if you can afford fast food delivery several times a week, you could afford one or two.big grocery deliveries a week instead.

are you seriously incapable of putting up with something you don't like briefly to have a greater reward down the line? you must live a pretty sheltered life if that's the case, because a lot of things in life require you to go outside your comfort zone. not that anon, but as somebody who also makes near daily visits to the grocery store, I am happy to spend 5 minutes doing something mildly unpleasant in order to have fresh food whenever I want. the benefit far outweighs the negative in my opinion. when you visit the grocery store frequently enough you know the layout like the back of your hand and where everything is. I go in and out within minutes, do I love it? no, but it's not like some grueling task. and I DO love having fresh food.

There's no bumfuck nowhere in Europe, if you drive 1 hour you cross a least a couple countries. Everything is kinda close
Knownonymous No.21435092 [Report]

Mostly untrue, it on average takes 4 hours to travel across a medium sized european country. And we certainly do have bumfuck locations, we just don't have that much emptiness.

"Kinda close" is correct tho as far as Poland is concerned. 3m walk to most crucial stores, 10 minutes if I want to save money in a market. These are the suburbs. In the deep countryside you either have a general store near the center of a village or there are actually people driving and selling from pickups. In city uptowns stores are, more often than not, your groundfloor neighbours.

I have 5 supermarkets within a 10 minute walking distance from home. 7 within 15 minutes.
One of my favourite things is checking out the new flyers when they drop and planning which stores I'm going to go to.

I used to use company vehicles to go get groceries occasionally but now I prefer walking through my neighborhood and seeing everyone out doing stuff and playing in the park or wrenching on their car in the driveway or whatever. It's also a good exercise especially when you have heavy groceries because you're basically doing a farmers walk all the way home.

>I am eating fresher food by buying it every day!!!
You do know that the produce on the shelf is likely a week old (or more, if it's a less popular item and the grocery store is lower traffic) and doesn't get constantly cycled, right?
A guy who's buying a week's worth of vegetables after the grocery store gets their delivery for the week is probably eating just as fresh as you are despite your daily trips

as somebody who goes to the grocery store probably every other day, and sometimes more - it's not even necessarily about having fresh food. for one, it's because I don't drive, and it's easier to carry a small load of groceries. two, because more frequent trips allow more flexibility in what I cook on a day to day basis and requires less planning ahead.
that said I only do it because I live so close to the store that I can leave, shop and be back home within the span of 20 minutes so it's not really a burden.

oh, and another thing is that a lot of grocery stores will put big discounts on things that are about to expire, and if you go frequently you can take advantage of that. which is kind of the opposite of eating fresh, but still. I love picking up meat or produce that's been marked down 75% because it's gonna go bad the next day and eating that for dinner..a lot of it is still good. you get some really good deals..

I shop once a week. It's actually a good diet tool because I have to carry everything home.

The biggest pro tip is try not to buy anything with water in it. If it can be reconstituted, great. Think like a backpacker. Try to get something frozen on each trip to keep the rest of your groceries cold on the walk home. Get not-food items delivered, since you usually get overcharged for them anyway if you're buying from a supermarket.
