Thai Food
Is it overrated? I've been eating it a lot recently and it's got me thinking how I hardly ever crave old school Chinese take out anymore. These restaurants are everywhere and while some are mediocre the good ones are really good. That said do you think Thai is overrated and overrepresented these days or do you think it's properly rated?

it's properly rated imo, one of the best cuisines there is. if anything as a whole it's underrated, while certain dishes are overrated. most people only know a couple of dishes like pad thai and thai curry, but there's a lot of other great stuff that flies under the radar.

>Go to Thai restaurant
>Waiter is white, cooks are all Mexicans
>Say I have a coconut allergy and am assured the pad Thai has no coconut and there's no cross contamination
>Have an anaphylactic reaction in the middle of my meal
>Sued the restaurant and they closed down
>Never tried Thai food again

There seems to be a lot of overlap with the culinary culture of neighboring countries.

You should kill yourself unironically. Fuck you.

It was 2009 in a backwater flyover, I never even heard of Thai food at that point or knew anything about it and specifically told the waiter/owner about it. He should have explained the potential for cross contamination and I would have simply left. He chose to lie for a few extra bucks and almost killed me. Fuck him and fuck you.

For what it's worth, i would hate to be allergic to coconut. Coconut milk when used for cooking is godly

What are some examples? I always end up ordering the same Pad See Ew and yellow curry everytime but all their soups and salads look good

Not overrated, it's god tier especially if you can handle spice and like fish sauce, although to be honest some of the best dishes aren't even spicy. Thais make great fried chicken and khao kha moo (pork leg on rice) and moo krob (crispy pork belly) are delicious, though not really a western thai restaurant thing though you generally have to go to thailand for those
I still will go to thai restaurants back home but obviously the thaislop in bangkok is way more varied, cheaper and more delicious

thai soups are fantastic, do yourself a favour and try tom yum and tom kha gai.
papaya salad/som tum is good, traditionally very spicy though.
as for underrated dishes, some of my favourites are khao soi, pad kra pao, moo hong, thai suki.
also as >>21454148 says, a lot of great stuff is just random shit you pick up on the street in Thailand, the stuff in the west doesn't compare but it's still good.

Yes, one of the best dishes. With a crispy fried egg with a runny yolk and lots of birdeye chilies.
Everytime I order it outside of Thailand I have to convince them I want it very spicy and it still ends up not that spicy, luckily in most Thai places you can ask for extra chilies or they have it at the table.
Funnily enough, in Thailand, they don't care and they make it super spicy if you ask for it.

Thai Pineapple Fried Rice. It's way different. Sometimes they put raisins and cashews in there. It's hands down the best fried rice. Crab fried rice is good, too.
