I was just in Japan and tried one of these. It just tastes like strawberry shortcake.
IMO conbini food over there is nothing special in terms of actual taste, the real advantage is that they're rotating the stock several times per day so you're usually getting something made reasonably fresh.

Well, and the other main thing is the fact that there are convenience stores everywhere and that I can get a strawberry sandwich, a beer, and an onigiri for only like 3-4 dollars total.
