It's a seasonal thing. May is for asparagus everywhere, June-July strawberries with everything, late summer wild mushrooms on every menu and sold on every corner.

wow those strawberries are dark, they look really good. the strawberries in the supermarkets here are totally ass, big, plump and pretty looking but they have absolutely zero flavor.

Supermarket ones are generally ethylene ripened ones from california that didn't naturally develop sugar from being ripened on the plant
Extremely good for compotes/gels/jams but not proper for eating

when i buy strawberries now i'll wait a few days before starting to eat them so they have a chance to ripen a bit more. i was even considering leaving them unrefrigerated for a day or two so they'd ripen faster. it can't compare to a fully ripe freshly picked strawberry but they're sold underripe like a lot of other fruits that you just have to wait before eating.
