Plantation Rum name change
>Why have we made the decision to evolve our name?

>In response to the ongoing global conversation on racial equality, Plantation and Maison Ferrand acknowledge the potentially hurtful connotation associated with the word β€œplantation,” particularly due to its connection with darker historical realities.

Has anyone tried the new Plantaray rum? Does it taste the same? Was this change even warranted, is the word plantation inherently negative?

in the context of the southern states in the US it's got baggage. I think in general the connotations in the caribbean are different because slaves there were simply worked until they keeled over and literally died, whereas the ones in the US were often used as household servants when they got too old to toil in the fields productively. so the lore of whippings and rapes and so on, that got passed down from generation to generation in the US, aren't really a thing in the caribbean

But aren't there plantations that didn't use slaves? Why is the word only associated with slavery?

I thought plantation just meant any intensive farming operation that hires a lot of farmhand workers. There are still plantations today that I'm sure pay fair wages and have good working conditions.

There were black homesteaders, there were plantations with paid labor, and there were white sharecroppers, but these were edge cases, when people say "plantation" in the context of the US they mean a large southern (slave state) farming operation powered by black enslaved laborers, just like how when they say "homesteaders" people today generally picture whites, southern agriculture could not have existed in the form that it did, without large scale enslavement

This is so dumb and plantations really weren’t all that bad and theoretically they never left and instead of living on the plantation for free (other than you’re work) you are now both working and paying rent to live on an enormous plantation, of sorts.

also slavery was brought to the US colonies due to blacks complaining about other black indentured servants running away.

True. Slavery is an ancient custom practiced by indigenous Africans. Applying our Western moral standards to them by saying slavery is inherently bad is a form of cultural imperialism. We should be more accepting and learn from their native folkways.

Are you able to pause the race war that's raging in your head 24/7 and just look at this from a rational, numbers-based point of view?

Imagine you've got a brand of premium booze, and you want to sell more of it. Understand that, at least today, normal people have a negative view of slavery, it's pretty simple actually and it doesn't mean kill whitey, like how you're thinking. They just want to sell rum without touching on touchy subjects.

So picking a name that doesn't make people think about whippings and lynchings is good for business. Again, no white people have to be killed for this brand to succeed. It's just a word. You conservatives are all about facts and logic, aren't you?

Yes, but to the anti-imperialist imperialist (or, the imperialist anti-imperialist), it refers to a point in their peculiar history when they pursued freedom for all... except for the slaves that made their lives easier, at least until they drafted a law called the 13th amendment that says only the Government could own slaves, which was genuinely a good thing just out of principle. Curiously, they never repealed the amendment that nullifies the Monopoly of Force that every Government is inherently built upon, which is one of ten they wrote when first establishing their Government... but I digress. To placate this culture, Maison Ferrand changed the name of their flagship "rum" ethanol formulation, so as they would no longer be reminded of how much of a hypocritical lie the concept of a "free country" will always be. Of course, nobody involved will ever describe it in those terms, and instead hem about "racial equality" being the catalyst for their decision. And they need this culture's money, since they've also crafted a law that protects the sale of the drug ethanol throughout its fifty (officially recognized) regional sub-states, after a relatively brief period where the drug was banned that ended with the culture propagandizing the experiment as having no merit behind it.

TL;DR - The 21st amendment was a mistake.

>plantations automatically mean slavery nooooo we can't say that word!!

Firstly, everyone who was a slave owner or who was a slave in Barbados is long dead. So no, no one should feel guilty about life from 191 years ago. https://barbadosghs.weebly.com/post-emancipation.html

The West Indies Rum Distillery (Plantation Rum) was founded in 1893, 59 years after slavery was abolished in Barbados. https://www.businessbarbados.com/articles/west-indies-rum-distillery

So this is purely virtue signalling. It's possible that the plantation used for the distillery was previously a slave-based plantation, but that's irrelevant because it would have changed before the distillery was founded. Avoiding a normal agricultural word doesn't provide any kind of merit. Are all the dead slaves of two centuries ago going to roll over in their graves and transcend from limbo to the heavens, as if everything bad done to them was undone, because a fucking liquor bottle tries to prevent the possibility of people having a thought that links rum to slavery?

The changes in AOE3 make sense because not all countries had slavery (thus estates is broader like plantation and may include places like Mexico which used labor-heavy estates but technically not slavery - it was more like serfdom).

As for colonial age, not all countries had colonies, either, and colonial age is a made up term anyway. Age of Exploration is the historical term.

Fact is that no-one ever thought "I'm not buying this rum because of the name" before. Just like no-one ever has problems ordering a "Negroni" at a bar.

no they are not. you can not farm corn in the same field every year or the soil gets depleted. typically farmers here do one year snoybeans one year corn. sometimes you can get away with 2 years corn.

There's only one negroni, and it's not trademarked. There's no shortage of good rums.

There is a wine that I like, that I would get more often, except the name kind of icks me out. No real rational reason for it but if there's another wine like it, that doesn't ick me out, I'll get that one.

Rum is a competitive market, and you aren't the only customer. Go ahead and petition Trump to bully them into changing it back, he might take you up on it, just need to vote against your own interests again :)

The "I'm not even from the US (I just happen to have extremely US-specific opinions on this US-related topic)" line is a typical troll argument to evade accusations against "people like you", it's like the people who claim to not be in a political party and make glib hand-waves about the two party system after posting an extremely detailed hot take on an extremely partisan US policy disagreement that shows a clear bias towards one of those two parties
