I'm not sure why I'm writing in this forum, I guess I just think you guys have some elite opinions about food maybe.

Anyways I wanted to ask about what I should sell on my college campus?

I want to sell food, but I don't know what exactly. I was thinking about onigiri, Japanese rice balls, they seem easy to make and also convenient to eat and sell.

I'm thinking about storing them in an ice cooler and selling it that way.

But again, I'm not sure what exactly I should sell.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Tips or ideas?

Thanks.

Not balls, triangles.
This is how 7-eleven and other stores sell onigiri in Asia
They don't even need to be refrigerated. If they don't sell by end of day they just throw them out
They're super cheap to make

You could do musubi, wouldnโ€™t have to worry about fish then.

Why do you want to sell food, and whatโ€™s your goal in selling it? Are you thinking of just setting up on the sidewalk?

A meal service where you cook a batch of food might be nice, whatโ€™s your level of cooking skill?

I want to sell food to make some money, but also because I feel bad for the students here. There's not a lot of options for food, the cafeteria gets old quick, and surrounding area does not have many cheap options.

I don't have a permit, so I really don't know how it works, setting up on the sidewalk and all. I was thinking of doing things under the radar on the school campus somewhere. But again, I'm not too sure. That's why I'm asking for thoughts and suggestions on here

Grilled cheese.
Proper sourdough bread with a selection of cheeses and toppings. Easy to make, hard to fuck up, and you just need a hot plate. Draft a menu first, then buy some ingredients.

Don't ask us, ask the people on your school campus, dumbass. We're not the ones that would be buying and eating it, so see what people on your campus like. Ask them what the campus doesn't have that they wish it did so you can fulfill a need. Half the people here would just buy fast food slop on your campus if you offered it to them to begin with.

College kids usually don't have refined palates. I'd go for; Grilled cheese with bacon, and tomato soup. Pasta salads. Chicken nuggies with cheese fries. Breakfast burritos. Biscuits and gravy. Smash burgers. Sloppy Joes. Simple shit like that.
Also if you could offer a nice drink option like a watermelon juice with lime/lemon and a bit of mint I think that would be a big seller, especially in summertime. But yeah, K.I.S.S, my guy (keep it simple, stupid)

Forgetting that most of /ck/ do NOT fall into that category, who cares what connoisseurs like? What matters is what your customers want. You never said what the people on your campus wanted in your OP. You said you talked to them, what do they want?
Can you distill what they have been telling you into 3 different cuisines/food types for us? Look at what they want, tell us what they want, and out of the foods where there is ACTUAL demand, we can discuss what would be feasible with your means.

Is correct. Don't go for what you like. Don't go for what you know how to make well. Go for something they like but isn't offered yet.

"Your campus" isn't your target audience. Who do you want to cater to? Exigent women who draw in beta men? Or men who need to tone down their drunkenness (and start fights anyway)? Either way, people don't like what you like. Tomato soup and grilled cheese are perfect recommendations, provided you can make them cheaper (not better, that's irrelevant, I tried, it really doesn't matter at all).

The people on his campus is his customer base, and as such 100% his target audience. OP said he feels bad for the students and wants to sell them specifically food while making some money.

Onigiri are alright, but that's the issue, they're really "just okay", not craveable and delicious. They're the Japanese equivalent of a bologna sandwich, they're a lunchbox staple for school or work, but not really something people go out of their way for.

If you really want to drum up business, it has to be more exciting and delicious. Something fried, meaty, crunchy, spicy, bright colors and big flavors. Something you could smell from down the block, ideally.

Maybe get a flat top propane grill and make cheese-crusted breakfast burritos. Just use powdered scrambled eggs like hotels do, and pre-cooked brown-and-serve breakfast sausage, but when you're on-site start frying up the bacon. That'll be the smell that draws people in. Bring an air fryer and pump out some frozen hash browns. Spread out a layer of shredded cheddar and lay the tortilla down on it so the outside gets a cheese crust, then fill the burritos with bacon, egg, american cheese, sausage and potatoes. Charge $8 each and make sure you have a QR code for your cashapp.

Oh, and also bring a cooler with energy drinks and bottled water. People would stop by just for one of those. Get a canopy so you can work in the sun and rain, and a couple of prep tables. Fill some squeeze bottles with a homemade hot salsa for people to drizzle on, or fill little cups of picante sauce for 50ยข each to go.

Coffee is popular, so I'd make ice coffee. Keep the dronk in 2 liters in the backpack with a soft sided cooler for ice.
Soft taco wraps are good for a hot cooler, and of course hot dogs should be in the hot cooler

Yeah just be careful about laws. As much as you can, do as much ServSafe manager training as you can even without getting certified just to say that you did everything by the books. I'd recommend doing it in from your dorm/room if you can since that'd be more discreet, but you do you.
You could ask around and switch up your menu a bit, experiment a little. Maybe you can find an interesting niche to get into. Tailoring your products to your clients will build invaluable trust and maybe open up new ideas that'll be a hit.
Personally, I think some unique riceball-like recipes have some merit. Something like Tex-mex where you bastardize the original dishes to make it more palatable for the masses. Maybe you'll make the Taco Bell of Japan.

OP what about cookies? Easy to make fresh, seem popular, low cost, can make them breakfast specific if you want to hit the morning folks, usually take a 1 to 1 gf flour substitution well.

Just make them big if you want them to feel โ€œluxeโ€, and use white/brown kraft paper bags or cellophane bags with twist ties (ziplocks look cheap)

I have a ServSafe certificate, but I'll do some more reading on food safety. The main thing I'm worried about is that the school won't allow me to sell food. Either on campus or just outside campus, both requires permission from the school or the city. If I ask them, they will probably say no. Or should I ask for forgiveness rather than permission?
