Food service wagies, what are some of your worst and best experiences working in food service?
My worst was working in a supermarket bakery and finding out my gross white trash manager chick was regularly getting boned by another manager on the on the prep table.

The best was working at McDonald's and getting to make my own free food. I made the best Big Macs and Fish Filets.

It just makes you look lame, especially to your younger coworkers, but if you're in a situation where you're working in fast food past the age of 22, and you're not even a shift manager, you're honestly already lame anyways, and you should at least buckle down at that fast food job to make it to management, because obviously you're not doing shit else with your life anyways.

I worked at Papa Johns for 2 days, the manager left me alone on the first day for 5 hours. I could barely make a pizza and it was just me and one old delivery guy all afternoon. The second day he made me work open to close and I didn't come back after that.
Hope you run your store better, if you have the GM experience I would try to get out and work for a better place at least. Try Panera Bread or something more comfy.

I will die at papa's but yeah, I like to put newbies in the trenches alone, it's funny to me and also it weeds out little pussies like you. It's pizza, it's not that fucking hard, you would have watched a few hours of training videos by the time you were put on the makeline, there are pictures all over the place showing you exactly how to top the pies, the only remotely skillful part is stretching the dough, which is a position that's usually staffed by utter retards at my store, because it's still extremely repetitive and simple. It lets me know if you have two brain cells to rub together to make a pizza, and it lets me know if you can handle it when shit gets retarded, because it's fast food, shits gonna get retarded. People call out, people walk out, people no call no show, and you might have to see a full screen of pies and might have to work then alone. If you do what any sane, halfway intelligent person can do, and not freak out and not take it so fucking seriously, congratulations you can probably run your own store in two weeks. If not, bye, there's a thousand other morons who need a low skill low pay job.
I don't schedule people for clopens like that, though, I always thought that was fucked.

One of the easier kitchen jobs, pretty much just get your list done, clean up after yourself, and take direction. In a short time, you'll be able to look at your prep list for the day and immediately plan your day around it. Things that take a long time, do them first: baking bread, braising something, reducing something, smoking something, things of that nature, take a long time but it's largely "put this in the oven and leave it there for four hours". Then you can tackle your small shit, picking herbs, chopping shit, things that don't take very long but there's usually a lot of them on your list. Get comfortable with a knife and be prepared to cut yourself, burn yourself, drop something heavy on yourself, etc. If you apply yourself just a little bit, but don't stress out, it'll be a chill gig for you in a matter of weeks, just listen to music and cook, none of the stress and fast pace of the line. Prep is all about time management and staying on your shit, if you can do that you'll be fine.

That's the only part I mentioned that could be construed as treating people like shit, my admission that I throw new hires right in the trenches on their first shifts. I'm retarded, and I'm biased, but I think I'm a pretty good manager, because if you show up and somewhat do your job, I leave you alone. I don't micromanage, I don't care if you use the gay little scoops for the toppings or not, I don't care if you go out back and smoke weed or meth or whatever you want, I don't care if you take thirty smoke breaks, I don't care if you milk the clock, I don't care if you cleaned shit perfectly at close, I just don't fucking care. In my experience, I'm a one in a million fast food gm, it's usually anal types who really buy into the company bullshit. I show up and get my paycheck, I make pizzas sometimes, clean sometimes, and that's all I expect of anyone working for me because that's all that's required.

I work in a grocery store. In a union store you can be a lazy shit if you want. You'll simply attract more negative attention from managers, but they can't fire you unless you're caught stealing product, money, or time or you assault a customer verbally or physically.

Best: if you're in the dairy department or grocery night crew and decide not to be a lazy shit, you basically have a free gym.

Worst: lazy coworkers who leave you shit to do. The work never stops, but at least you get paid.

I worked at Domino's on and off for several years. I had applied at a lower volume store close to me, but ended up getting transfered for a couple reasons. One, I didn't speak Spanish while everyone else in that store did, and two, the franchise REALLY needed more people at one of three stores.
I was living in Kissimmee, FL at the time and got sent to Davenport, specifically the super high volume store next to all the fucking vacation houses and schools n shit. I was thrown straight into one of the busiest stores in the fucking country as an insiderbfresh off the training videos. The videos don't teach you jack shit, and sure as hell don't teach you muscle memory. The first night I started there, I was just on the phones and registers getting overwhelmed. I was too slow on the makeline, so I decided to download an app on my tablet at home and make flash cards so I could memorize toppings instead of relying on the pictures. Me, a grown-ass man doing homework, lol. Anyway, it paid off, but I was still mostly told to stay at the front since I was an absolute machine at handling customers and labeling boxes. Quickly, I ended up dual-wielding phones while still taking walk-in orders, fucking 3 orders at once. I'd always have to tell the drivers to fuck off since not only did I have everything handled, but they'd often fuck something up one an order under my credentials since I would use 2 screens at a time. Anyway, to sum up me glazing myself, I was TOO good an insider, so my GM didn't want to let me go. The problem was I was spending most my checks just getting to work and back via Uber since I can't drive. I had gotten in touch with another GM at a store closer to home that I could actually walk to(it would have been quite the walk though) and he wanted me in his store. So, he, I, and some other managers all planned out for me to transfer closer to home, I put in my two weeks at that store out of courtesy, and at the last minute,

My GM lied through his teeth to all of us and said we never spoke to him about it and I was already scheduled to do my usual open/close as a fucking insider (which is very abnormal), and I was SOL. I decided "fuck that" and still quit at that store to work in the new one, but the bastard fired me, even though the other GM had hired me, causing a huge fuck up in paperwork that ultimately led to me marked unhirable in the franchise.

You're the retarded one.

If he's out to target someone, it's because he has someone in mind.
If he hurts anyone else before that (i.e, you), he'll lose the chance to hit his intended target.
If he doesn't have an intended target, then he's not going to attack you in the first place.
And if he does attack you, you were justified in forbidding his entrance in the first place.

It's a situation where you're not going to get attacked no matter what, and you're better off forbidding him from bringing it in.

i worked in a walmart mcdonalds as a teenager and the grease bins were all the way at the back of the walmart, so you'd have to scoop buckets of grease out of the trap (picrel is oc of the actual trap, from 2011 iirc) and wheel the buckets through the walmart where all the customers were shopping and dump the buckets. the smell was horrible. one time something fell in and i had to reach in, made it past my elbow. i just shivered remembering it as i write this post lol

>Many years ago
>Serve a souffle to a customer
>Young couple with a kid about 2yo
>It's served in a cast iron pot, and has a bunch of melted chocolate on top
>Later, they complain to my manager
>Their kid had climbed up onto the table and shoved his entire fist into the souffle
>This was my fault, because I "didn't tell them it was hot"
I'm now a parent, and go figure - my toddler doesn't shove his hand into random food.

When I worked at burger King I made a KFC double down style burger with whopper meat, cheese, and bacon in the middle.

I'd probably eat fast food if they charged by the ingredient and let you make whatever you want.

Guys immigration has ruined the job market. Immigration for the low end and H1Bs (slavery) for the high end.

Does anyone know of any videos showing how to prep most items in bulk for a restaurant?
I'm too afraid to ask
If the chef sees me doing it and doesn't tell me otherwise do I just keep on going? Shallots in particular seem very difficult

score the outer layer with a parry knife enough so you can use the edge to peel it away enough to pinch it with your fingers.

Cool I'll try that next time
I was trying to pull from the top after cutting the top and bottom off
Cutting through 1-2 layers won't be a problem?

Imagine if that's how society worked, whenever you mocked or belittled a person you had to tip them, and you tipped them more the more you were digging at them.
I could retire.

I was in line at the grocery store and a little girl and her dad got in line RIGHT behind me. I became a pedophile right on the spot. Because out there anons. Little girls can be anywhere and pedophilia is airborne.

Does anyone have problems with noxious and irritating smoke from deep fryers?
My boss is a total kike and won't pay us to clean the fryer, which now constantly emits foul smelling and irritating vapors

Is it a bad look to constantly be washing my hands in the kitchen? I used to have issues with contamination anxiety as a teenager which I've dealt with but it's still there in the background

My only food service job was Little Caesars for a couple years in college. I liked it.
>most of my coworkers were other college students or high school students, as opposed to fast food lifers or illegals
>worked with some cute girls there, never fucked any but there was one I drunkenly made out with and felt up at a party hosted by a coworker
>could take home timed out pizza and crazy bread at the end of your shift (30 minutes in the hot and ready box before it becomes waste)
>when it was slow we could make some pizza for the staff to share, or take the timed out products to the back to eat
>on weekday morning shifts it was usually just me and one guy who was a total bro, we'd buy some vodka at the liquor store next door and get day drunk mixing it with a 2L of Sprite in the walk in

Is it possible to advance from dishwasher to cook anymore?
I started as a dishwasher two weeks ago and they're getting me to do prep, peeling shit, cutting shit, portioning, washing and cutting herbs, etc.
Idk if I want to be a cook but I can't be bothered doing anything else or looking for anything else so I might as well grind what I have as hard as I can.
