Back before ww2 there was a grand tour,It was a drive thru a country or two for rich people,with advent of cars and tires people began to partake in grand tours with their rolls royces and bentleys and michelin decided people are traveling using our tires we might make em buy new tires by enticing them to drive bit longer to a certain hotel/restaurant and establish rapport with our clientele thru food
They made a guide and grand tourer became a term for cars like aston martin db6 for example,quick luxurious and good for travel.
