>>21505670>Meanwhile in reality Trump's first term tariffs all resulted in price increasesIm a machinist.
In his first term, he irreparably damaged the local industry when he implemented tariffs *directly* on machine tools and tooling for some reason, and trashed the price of raw metal with tariffs. He shut down tons of hundred year old small mom and pop machine shops. We already run on razor thin margins.
The new blanket tariffs (and the targeted metal tariffs) are going to shake out the rest of the small shops who were lucky to weather the storm years prior.
The mom and pop shops are the ones that have AC, give young guys apprenticeships out of high school, teach them real skills, pay them well above average and care about their workers to keep them long term.
The other big conglomerate shops are dirty, dingy, dangerous places who hire from temp agencies and pay minimum wage to absolute morons. No skill, push a button, get fired for not working 60 hours a week.
Sad state of affairs and things are only going to get worse.
You either go to school, get a degree, then get expensive certifications to work in aerospace machining, or you work in slum shops. There is no longer in between.
For a while you could work yourself into being a manual programmer, but AI is quickly taking that avenue away too.
Im actively looking into new job fields.
