How do you prevent these from exploding?
I just pressure cooked some beef chuck and I was shitting myself the whole time. It came out edible and tasting like corned beef, but the thought I had in my mind the whole time was if the thing just exploding.
How do people even manage to get these to explode? I thought they were the one appliance that was so reliable, the company went under because no one ever replaced them.

they are reliable. explosions are extremely rare. just follow the safety instructions and you will more than likely never have a problem. it's like being afraid to drive a car because you might crash. it could happen, but statistically it's very, very unlikely to if you drive safely and millions of people drive every day without incident.

Hopefully I haven't lost my instruction manual. But I'm just straight out paranoid now since I've basically never pressure cooked before. I was using my instant pot this whole time to just make rice, mac and cheese, poached eggs, bacon, but all on simmer mode.

81? no, that's really not a lot when you consider that are 10s of millions, if not 100s of millions of pressure cookers in households. that's a fraction of a percent.
>>21524770
you can find an instruction manual online I'm sure. but seriously, there is no point in being so paranoid. I'm not gonna tell you there is zero risk. but people take risks every day. you take a risk every time you drive, every time you fly in a plane, or playing sports. if you were paranoid about every single thing that COULD kill you, you'd never leave your room.

It is in australia. We've got a pretty high minimum wage, but it's a little fucked how much it muddles the curve. You can have a litany of qualifications but because the min wage is so high, you're punished for being qualified in high skilled or high risk work by sharing the same income as a mcdonalds worker.
Thus, making it so rent in suburbs is basically 50% of anyone's wage.

Kind of. I lack basic social skills when dealing with psychos who literally want to pick fights but can leverage the law because they've gotten experience in fucking up their own lives. Normies on the other hand love me.

Easy: keep it clean, make sure the gasket is in good shape and properly installed, make sure the lid is applied properly and securely, and most importantly: don't be a fucking retarded faggot.

It it common with these modern electric pressure cookers? I know it was a problem in the past with the stove ones but my instant pot has a couple of safety pressure releases.

I once didn't add enough water while pressure cooking some beans, and the Instant Pot detected it was running dry, beeped and shutdown, flashing an error code.
There's no way these things can explode anymore unless the circuitry is fried. It will stop working electronically before it fails physically

The failure mode leading to explosions/burns is the lock on the lid failing.

Except they don't explode, at worst they just blast you with hot steam.

The hot foot/liquid inside "explodes" all over you, causing third-degree burns on a significant portion of your body.
This is the failure mode in hundreds to thousands of lawsuits.
The design/manufacturing flaw (the defect) is that the safety features (the lock on the lid) are supposed to prevent the lid from coming off while the contents are under pressure, but sometimes fail, leading to the lid suddenly explosively coming off and spraying incredibly hot contents all over the place.

I think in the majority of cases the plaintiff tried to remove the lid while the pot was under pressure, and the safety feature that failed was the one that prevents that. Yes, the pot should lock so that nobody can do that, but trying to remove the lid from a pressurized cooker is abominably stupid.

The remainder, where the lid did in fact spontaneously blow off, were probably rare accidents caused by a combination of product defect and overfilling.
Anonymous No.21529644 >>21529863
>>21529617
So it's definitely not something that would be caused by slightly underfilling, right?
Anonymous No.21529863
>>21529644
Underfilling will just lead to a "burn" error or the cooker never reaching pressure, which is easy to spot.
But you really don't need a lot of water to pressurize. When I boil potatoes in my 6qt instant pot, I just add one cup of water.

No it isn't, what causes a pressure cooker to explode is the safety relief valve failing because it's gummed up with food debris.
All manuals mention this and if that is kept clean there should never be an issue.
Anonymous No.21531382
There was a good thread the other week, I don't know what happened to it. Basically pressure cooker explosions happen for only a few reasons.
1. someone tries to force the pressure cooker open while it's still hot, which can cause all the liquid to turn to steam instantly.
2. the main valve fails to open, the user fails to notice no steam is coming out, the secondary safety valve fails, some "dumb" pressure cookers can fail to recognize over-preassure. but even in this case the pressure cooker is rated for a far greater pressure than it cooks at so you would also have to have the cooker on high.
3. The body of the cooker is broken, or is dropped while at full pressure. It's in a car or something.

When I've seen these accidents 8/10 times it's someone who has a dumb cooker, over-fils the pot with something that tends to expand and absorb water like green lentils, then puts it on high on a gas stove

Anonymous No.21531942
Pressure cookers fail catastrophically if either a) they haven't been cleaned/maintained properly, causing gunk to clog the safeties; or b) they're some ancient design with shit safety features, and have been somewhat neglected.

I'm literally not aware of it. I'm learning as people respond. I was looking up how to pressure cook with an instant pot and one of the first things that came up was an explosion. Here, anons told me about over filling, seals, how in a lot of cases the wiring will fail before the hardware does. Even now, I'm a bit apprehensive about unfettered use of it. I've got some corned beef in it on medium heat and low pressure because I'm still afraid of explosions.

>I have all the knowledge on how to properly use my pressure cooker at my fingertips, as well as the knowledge that accidents are very rare
>But I'm still a scared little bitch because.....because I heard of a one in a million accident
Come on man. There is no reason to be scared when you're educated. If it's really something you can't get over, buy one of those air fryer lids that don't use the pressure functions at all then you can at least still get some use out of it. But seriously, just don't be a fucking idiot and you will be fine. Tens of millions of people use these things every single day. You're not going to be the 0.00001% or whatever the fuck that has a terrible accident. Worse case scenario, you might burn your finger or something, which can happen with any kitchen appliance and is just something you will have to get over if you want to cook at all. Fear is the mind killer. If you're afraid of your tools, you will never cook. May as well just chuck the fucking thing and buy an induction plate or something. Or you could just grow some balls. Up to you.
