If you look at price per serving grocery stores are actually more expensive. They all offer the same shit tier garbage at elevated prices, while quality stores charge more for far better produce.

Barilla (blue) is the lowest quality pasta there is, like the other guy said it's not better than store brand but it's significantly worse than 'premium' store brand, yet still more expensive. you only pay more so they can spend a couple hundred millions on marketing. Barilla (red packaging, only 400g) is mediocre pasta that is hilariously overpriced because it's not as good as decent brands like DeCecco, Garofalo or Rummo but they charge you more for worse pasta because they pay millions for ads. it's just like McDonald's

$6 in Chicago even with our taxes, at Aldi's.

But I'm the guy in Chicago with the Komo mill/sifter and a shite ton of Ball jars. So I roll my own. I've eaten at Rao's back in the day, as a guest, and the restaurant was special and the the food delicious. Only slightly better than Gene & Georgetti back in the 90's, I sat near Dan Rostenkowski and pols when he was released from prison, and their pasta and sauces set the standard as did their meats.

Alas ... (nothing persists except the Parasites)

Store bought crushed or peeled tomatoes are generally superior unless you grow your own tomatoes, in which instance nothing beats properly grown, maintained (electric toothbrush agitating tomato hairs 20 hz, minerals), and harvested tomatoes.

Do buy an electric Komo grain mill with power sifter. If you enjoy pastas and baked goids, you won't regret it. Pleasant Hill Grain, I highly rec as a non-affiliated customer. 0.02

I feel this way about fruit, I love it and can eat a ton but it’s hard not to think of the money I’m eating (for example 1 cup of blueberries is $1, and some days I’ll have 7 cups)

Also OP make sure you’re getting your Rao’s at Costco when they have them on sale. And you can send in a quality complaint and maybe some coupons for free jars.
Anonymous No.21526554
people can make sauce as good as rao's by just adding sugar to the canned tomato sauces to neutralize the acidity and a little salt, granulated garlic, fennel seeds, oregano to taste.
but the sugar is the secret because it doesn't sweeten it just makes the tomato sauce milder and subtler which is why people think rao's is so much better. its not, its just milder than canned but you can fix that.
understand that the reason san marzano tomatoes are considered so good is just because they're naturally sweet/have a higher sugar content
