The japanese on several occasions have forced me to eat dried fish with the head and scales on. It’s as fucking unpleasant as you could ever imagine

Well, you definitely don't live in Europe.
Canned Herring is more dense, less fishy. Try to get Matjes, the real fermented version. Very fishy and soft texture with mild Umami. With rye, butter and onions. If you only get the oil or vinegar pickled versions, make salad.

Scales and skin are two different things. They are always de-scaled and the skin is pretty nice once you get over the color.

I bought fresh sardines from the wet market and fried them in oil with onions and chopped chillies. It was mindblowingly delicious. The natural oils from the sardines added to the flavour and the flesh was nicely firm and flaky. There was no overpowering fishy smell as well. Fresh sardines are totally different from canned sardines.

I always feel ripped off. Each tin is a single serving and they're like 4.69 each. Chicken is cheaper by the pound and I can make soup with it by simmering it for an hour and have meals for the rest of the week. I genuinely don't get the sardine meme, they're relatively expensive unless you're getting the 0.69 a tin bottom of the barrel trash that's on clearance, aren't cleaned, and are probably from some polluted chinese waterway

The reason they are a meme is that preppers got them to balance out stores of carb/sugar shit with actual nutrition you need. And being preserved, it costs a fuckload more than actual raw meats.

It was never intended to be cost effective or even palatable. It was purely to supplement nutrition in a shelf stable format. Then /ck/ got ahold of it and meme'd it into a thing which trolls the noobs regularly when they buy shit canned seafood and discover it's horrible shit for 3x the cost of frozen actual good seafood.

Retard they're marine fish. The Chinese waterway they live is, is called the Ocean. The only difference in quality from one brand to the other is if the oil they use is any good.
