Forbidden Foods
I've always been tempted to drink the forbidden koolaid, the green one especially is so tempting. I bet it tastes like juicy apples.

I’ll look at the antifreeze outside of gas stations on a hot summer day and imagine how cool and frosty and soothing it would be on my insides.

Unfortunately, antifreeze is adulterated with bitterants precisely to keep fools like you from earning a darwin award. If it were straight ethelene glycol, it'd be the sweetest thing you ever tasted. Then you'd die.

someone needs to make a series of antifreeze themed drinks sold in bottles shaped like the real thing

Years ago there was apparently more than one instance of these kids drinking Fabuloso, these parents hired mexican cleaning ladies/babysitters or something and all those delicious colors were tempting

Holly berries — they look so good. I chewed on a few (spat them out) and they even taste good. There they are bright red on the bushes in late winter, a season bereft of fruit. Most sources are pretty cagey about their edibility too, saying things like "It is said they are poisonous." "Reputedly toxic." or as wikipedia says "Generally regarded as toxic."

Truly a forbidden food. I've never heard of anyone poisoned by them, despite the fact that I can't be the only one tempted to eat them.

Additionally, squirrels eat holly berries. There's a million things birds eat that are toxic to humans, but the list for squirrels is much shorter. Squirrels are more closely related to humans than the vast majority of the animal kingdom.

Yep, that sounds pretty vague. I guess THEY don't want us eating them. Another big lie with no truth behind it. Eat them down. After all, YOU'VE never heard of anyone poisoned by them in your infinite wisdom.

It's my solemn view that the birds would sing louder and the rain come gentler if every sarcastic cunt somehow landed in a vat of acid. Never has there been a more worthless group of scolds, who seemingly exist for nothing other than to spread misery. Go crawl up John Oliver's ass and die.

I think this one is actually forbidden, pic related.

However, they do say that you need to have 20 berries before you get symptoms so I'd say you can have a small handful of them every december as a special holiday treat. Have fun

As was hopefully apparent from context (a thread about being tempted to eat cleaning products) I was not entirely serious. However, for the sake of argument, ordinary foods that some people are intolerant to could generate similar case reports. Underripe mulberries make some people drowsy. Elderberries make some people throw up. Peanuts fuckin' kill people. "Most ingestions cause little or no toxicity." "Most cases are harmless." Could you say any better for actual food? Most bread ingestions are harmless, but it murders some people's colons and makes them shit blood.

By the way, I tasted the holly berries because there is an obscure European tradition of gathering them to make liquor (effectively a type of rakia). Saponins are non-volatile so not a problem for distillation.

Furthermore, saponins are present at low levels in a lot of foods (esp. herbs and spices). The dose makes the poison. As a parallel foraging example, some wild cherry fruit are bitter with cyanogenic glycosides while others of the same species have less of the glycosides so that they are perfectly edible. Some people got sick from saponins? Maybe they ate from the wrong bushes. It doesn't prove holly berries are poison any more than my preceding anecdote proves that cherries are poison.

When I was a kid, my parents were taking us to the city and we got stopped in traffic for what felt like forever. It was a nice day on the parkway with nowhere to go so people got out of their cars.
We all watched one woman who was standing near a car with her husband suddenly walk off into the forested area off of the roadway, which was lined with bushes blooming with berries. Traffic started up again, but she hasn't come back. The car she came from drove onward. We never saw her again as we went full speed ahead.... The theory I always held is that she went to pee and was hungry and ate the berries, and then. RETVRNED TO NATVRE

Those are edible though. Does anyone say they're poison? You have to be very careful not to swallow the potentially deadly yew seeds.

That bottle is absolute ethanol. The azeotrope bottles are probably o.k. to drink, but absolute ethanol is often dried by co-distilling it other solvents, often including benzene. I would not drink that.
