Many random firms compete for private label business in the US, but you never hear about them. Some of them source their product from factories in Canada and Mexico so you're paying the tariffs.

Yeah, I bought a bag of rice crispies at Wal-Mart and was forced to pay an extra $37.41 for import duties. Fuck that, Imma buy real Kellogg's Rice Krispies from now on, even if it does mean supporting a company run by religious fanatics who pushed circumcision on the U.S. to "cure" boys from masturbating.

Oh wait, you mean that's not how it works, they still have to compete on price, and the manufacturers and middlemen are the ones who have to eat the tariffs to stay competitive? nvm

Anonymous No.21539277 >>21539982
For some reason private label rice krispies contain HFCS but Kelloggs' does not. Kellogg's got rid of it and now has "malt flavor." In all likelihood, store brand rice krispies and cocoa krispies will taste more familiar before they get rid of the HFCS too.

I think they do too. I bought the same brand of plantain chips at Costco and Walmart and the Costco ones were noticeably better, more whole chips, not as many hard ones, etc.

That's is your impressionable mind telling you that it's inferior. In many cases, it's identical. In yet other cases, it's better. I know the Costco albacore is best in the market. My Publix brand seems to remove the crappy MSG from the national brands. Their ice creams are better than the rest. For sure the Aldi rainforest crackers are superior for your cheese snaking moods. Their sesame rice crackers are always freshest. Many storebrand sodas beat national brands, especially in the root beer and diet soda games.

Possible, but the differences were pretty consistent with the entire bag of both, it wasn't just a few chips here and there being different.

I would imagine that different stores set different quality standards. Like I've noticed with strawberries at different stores too. Cheaper stores will have more underripe strawberries and I'll have to wait like 3-5 days before eating them to let them ripen a bit first. But if I go to a more expensive store they're all pretty much good to eat that day. Cheaper store might have less waste because they can sit on the shelf longer before going bad but it's lower quality too.

Private labels have yet to nail kellogg's proprietary "malt flavor" with barley malt extract with their corn flakes. That's my guess.

With the honey nut cheerios, the great value lacks the brown sugar syrup, seed oils, and whatever "natural almond flavor" is in General Mills' ingredient list.

Sometimes this literally is the case though. There is something called co-packing which is where two companies use the same machinery to make different products, but one company is overbooked on sales so they contract production out to the other. I agree with this. A lot of the Signature Select (Albertson, Safeway, Vons) and Great Value cereals match in nutritional value and ingredients, so there's one plant cranking out the same cereals for various companies.

If you start seeing changes in labels it usually means reformulations. Lately they've been removing dyes and HFCS.

I saw a documentary about a factory selling canned mackerel in tomato sauce. They showed the production lines for the name brand and the generic/store brand. It was essentially the same fish, same process to gut it etc.
On the name brand production line they had people lay the mackerel into the can by hand(with gloves) to make them fit well, while on the store brand they were simply chopped to size by a machine. Fish quality was identical though.
Then the tomato sauce added was different, supposedly the name brand had a few more spices.
So really you were paying for 1-2 more premium ingredients and appearance. Might be worth it to some, or not worth it to others.

To be fair, it's a well-known fact that electronics companies sell cheaper versions of their products to Walmart. The model numbers reflect this.
For example, a Roku device sold at Walmart had the model number3941RW2 while the "same" device sold elsewhere is 3941R2. Note the Walmart one has a W in there.
What's the difference? The Walmart version has fewer ports, a lesser quality casing, lesser quality internal components and a cheaper remote with fewer buttons.
I don't know of any food companies doing this, though.

I do find that find the cost models for these things fascinating
Sardines are similar as well - the cheaper ones are bigger fish that are chopped to size and crammed in, while the more expensive are whole small fish nearly interlaced in the can, likely because they have people on payroll packing them manually.
If a factory is going the extra lengths to make their flagship cereal the best in its class, it only makes sense they build a separate more cost-effective process under a different name to tap into the "dem fruity loops is da same cuz, sheeit" market
