I have visited various provinces in Italy over the past several years and have tried probably a dozen different pizzerias there. Every time I visit one of these joints, I always leave unsatisfied. The disappointing taste lingers in my mouth the rest of the trip, and it isn’t until I return home to the states and treat myself to a pepperoni pizza from Little Caesars that I forget about the embarrassment that is Italian pizza and finally am content.

I'm Italian, and I eat pizza since the day my teeth came out. I've tried everything from discount frozen pizza to gourmet places where a basic cheese pizza is €18. And never in my life I have eaten a better pizza fhan I did in Naples. idk what they put in it but it was insanely good.

But I wouldn't say it's "so much better" than American pizza because a lot of American pizza is really great, and America makes those Italian pizzas really well too.
Maybe there's a lot of shit pizza here and maybe there's less shit pizza in "The Old Country", but all pizza is pretty damn good.

When you have to pay extra to get enough cheese and toppings to make a budget pizza into a decent pizza, you may as well just go get the cheapest good pizza from the good pizzeria. That's my thinking. The only time I'll even get one from some shitty place is if they're the only ones open and I'm too drunk to drive to a store.
