so there was this movie sideways that was a comedy about alcoholics or something. the main character had a throwaway line about how he never drank merlot (in those days, merlot was highly regarded, specifically varietal wine merlot from california). his favorite grape was the pinot noir. it was supposed to be ironic but like how incels today think patrick bateman is a role model, boomers thought the bald bitter divorced man was someone to emulate so they all acted like they loved pinot noir and hated merlot
the market responded by shitting out lots of inky black "pinot noir" with 20g/L residual sugar (because in those days, dark purple wines were considered superior), and to this day there are boomers who will insist that they love pinot noir and then you check their recycle bin and it's full of meiomi empties, if you served them a pinot noir made in a more typical fashion (with 100% pinot noir instead of 20% petit sirah as is allowed in california), they would not like it at all
so that's me with reubens, I love old timey NYC deli stuff but when you get right down to it, this particular NYC deli thing just isn't my cup of tea
