It's so unfair. You guys talk about how Subway is shit, Hungry Man tv dinners are shit, Skyline Chili is shit. I'd just be happy to be able to afford any of it. A 6in Subway sub costs $7 here which is my hourly wage. It tastes absolutely fine. Everything basically tastes fine. I just want to be able to afford calories that isn't rice.

lmao
Meanwhile, I can get an actually good hoagie on good bread with good meat from the deli down the street for $5.60 (was $4.50 last year, before Trumpflation).

What kind of hellhole do you live in where they still keep a 7 buck minimum wage? I mean cost of living here is kinda shit but you can find plenty of jobs here that pay 19 bucks with no experience required.

It's not hard to get a $20+ an hour job. Learn how to read a tape measurer and caliper. Go to a temp agency and have them get you a factory job.
You can learn these things in 30 minutes.

lots of people enjoy those products or they wouldnt be ubiquitous. but you can't look cool on the internet liking what's popular.

they can be very satisfying, i'm no snob: but location matters a lot, and the capacities/experience of the particular staff

Yeah that wage is absurd. Where the hell are you located?
Also please invest in some dried beans and canned cheap vegetables. You gotta have something other than rice. Keep checking your grocery clearance aisle

Honestly you should at the very least dox your boss, anyone genuinely expecting someone to do any form of labor for them for $7/hr in the US today is a total piece of shit and deserves every bit of hate and misfortune they get.

Unless OP is brown, then everyone in the US is okay with it.

Sad truth. Once the idiots get a foothold in a business they'll make sure to get rid of anyone even remotely competent and only hire people that are even dumber than they are so they look good. I had the luck of working for companies that that were extremely picky so if you didn't meet the standards you're out. Most places aren't like that.

This is a double-edged sword but I agree with the first part. I was fired from my first job in high school at a pizza joint after about a year because I pointed out to the owner that a few hours got cut off my check. He paid me out of the register and I got fired the next day despite being like their best employee. Owner was a total slum lord.

That's just abusive and counterproductive leadership. For me it was more showing up on time, doing your job and being professional because we were contractors. But most people couldn't even do that. I trained 5 dudes over a year and they were all let go in 2-4 weeks because they just sucked no matter how much i tried to cover for them being late etc. Everyone has a bad day, but if every day is a bad day there's only so much I can do.

I got 1/2 of Boar's Head ham the other day for $7.50. Buy a loaf of cheap bread, and it will last you 5 days.

In college I did facilities maintenance for a hotel and that was pretty much my experience. I initially applied to work in the kitchen or reception but was offered a position in maintenance instead. I explained to the manager that I had basically 0 experience in that area and she said it was fine because I had good attendance with my last employer and I gave common sense answers to her questions. I ended up leaening it pretty quick and it was an awesome gig but I saw so many people come and go who got hired, didn't show up, did a shitty job, late all the time, etc. I'm so conflicted about the boomer mindset of "people don't want to work" because my lived experience tells me thst most people in low-level service jobs are genuinely retarded and can't handle the basic adult responsibities of employment. The economy sucks, and the jobs suck, but people gave literally 0 effort.

Bro i tried so hard to push the people who were shadowing me to get their certs but they just wouldn't show up. I got bullshit excuses like my car is broken. No prob bro, I have a work truck, tell me where you live and I'll pick you up, we still have an hour and a half because I anticipated you being late. No reply.

I guess it doesn't help that in the construction industry we have to get drug tested any time there's an accident so people avoid it for that reason even if all we did was stand around with a clipboard and mark on the plans where they did work.

Oh yeah I forgot about this, at the hotel our policy was similar but there were random ones every few months. I was basically the only person who didn't drink/smoke in the whole department. It's insane how common and casually accepted substance abuse is among blue collar workers.
