/ctg/ coffee time general -
Fine, I'll do it myself edition.

This thread is for the discussion of coffee and uh
previous thread: ???

Here's a mediocre picture of an espresso I made a while ago. It was tasty.

Thread question: How do you respond when friends/family make bad coffee for you or make coffee gifts you can't or don't want to use?
Anonymous No.21594563 >>21594593
I say thanks and add milk. Milk helps it go down. As for gifts, just say thanks and give to someone else if practical.

That's good advice, but they all know I drink black. I'm 'that guy' who overshares about his hobbies, so drinking bad coffee in silence is probably my just punishment.
The worst coffee I ever drank was this off-brand Nespresso "ristretto" capsule at my borther's.

They know it's bad coffee when they serve it to you; they're testing to see if you can actually identify its inferior quality or if you're just a fake after all. They're trying to break you anon.

Don't let them.

Stand your grounds and give them the bitter truth they deserve: you don't respect their coffee offering. It was foolish of them to imagine in the first place that they could ever hope to find a coffee paraphernalia that you would find stimulating. In fact, you have an oddly specific coffee recommendation for them based on their misguided gift giving attempt. Come back to my place and I will make you a truly bold blend that excites your senses like nothing you've tasted previously. Now they're trapped. Either they accede to your coffee date, giving you free reign to demonstrate your bean roasting prowess, or they decline thereby filtering themselves as rivals for your station as brew master.

French roast LΓ©rida Loma Gesha. 10:200g, 2 min tbt with a sibarist fast flat on sworks dripper. I can push it way further but fuck is it great. Hopefully these ultra clean washed panamas don't ruin my palate.
>This coffee comes from LΓ©rida Estate, located in the Alto Quiel region of Boquete, from a lot known as β€œLoma” at 1800 MASL. It was harvested in February 2025. The coffee was selected using only the ripest cherries through a flotation process. Afterward, the cherries were placed in a fermentation tank equipped with a hose connected to a motor that introduced oxygen to oxidize the cherry skin. This oxidation process was carried out for 7 hours only. After 48 hours, the fermentation process was complete. The cherries were then depulped and moved into a cold room to dry as a washed coffee for a period of 25 days.

Its a joke. Lighter than his nordic roast. Its a "copy" of Substance's profile.
>This style of roast aims to be one of the lightest you can buy from a specialty roaster in the world, aiming to only be roasted enough to avoid most of the astringent, grainy or vegetal tasting notes. This roast style produces the most florality and aroma while having very little bitterness, while including a balance between acidity and sweetness.

This, only caffeine fiends complain about the rise in bean cost.
Normies buy coffee by the fucking kilogram and pay like ~20€ (up from 17€) for something that isn't bottom shelf, and that's whole beans, some pre-ground garbo is like 8€ a pack. You stand in front of a shelf with 500 different bags and you have a ~50% chance of finding a single one that is 250g and not pre-ground - supermarket coffee is effectively treated like a base consumption product (like flour or sugar) and that's okay, but the perception and branding is becoming that of a luxury item which is quite silly.
I have a mid-range set-up and buy mid-range speciality beans.
It's a miracle of modern logistics that I get to enjoy an absolutely delicious cup of coffee ever day for less than 1€. Normies should appreciate coffee just a little more.

but even if i was it i think would still be a valuable learning experience.
...
ok so basically the showerhead i bought was wrong i bought the "E&B Lab Precision Nanotec Shower Screen(E61200RNT)" and it just doesnt fit which really sucks(-$50) so instead i just used the 8mm gasket from Jetblack Espresso(so far i recommend them if you cant find the part you need on alternative brewing)
i also got from AB (forgive me if i've said this before)
>Cafetto EVO Machine Cleaner
>Ten Mile Blind Filter Disc
>Pesado Espresso Shot Mirror
>Ten Mile Dosing Collar
>Pesado Crusher WDT Tool(Riga)
>Ten Mile Barista Cloth
>Rhino Mini Waste Bin(quality is kinda trash but its the cheapest knockbox so whatever)
all of which has been really good.
shot mirror/dosing collar/WDT all seem superfluous but they actually provide a good amount of QOL

and the cafetto and blind basket have allowed me to back flush which made me feel more comfortable using the machine because i now know that its(at least the group head) is as clean as it can reasonably be.
and i just scrubbed and soaked the old ECM shower screen in the cafetto for 3 days so it also its as clean as it can reasonably be
the back flush cycles(i did 2 and then did 2 full system flushes, so like 10+ liters over the course of a couple days) and generally the colour of the water was clear/clearer than you would expect from a machine this used and this old.
but even after the full second back flush there was a tiny amount of sand/sediment(?) 1/2

Add in some bottom papers as soon as you can. Big gamechanger. Speedrun to modern espresso. Currently sipping the last of my Apollon's gold Pepe syoxy :( Its phenomenal. Added 3 drops of Empirical "extraction booster"(magnesium chloride+magnesium sulfate) directly to the slurry before my last two pours and felt like a chemist :)

but it was like 1 spec and the water looked smelled and tasted clean so i dont really know what to think about it, do you have more insight on what it could be ?
also the machine was essentially out of commission for almost 2 weeks so its nice to finally have it working again so im going to just use it for a while before embarking on the next thing
which idk might be fucking with the boiler/seeing if any of the electronics need to be replaced OR do more on the group head such as replacing/cleaning the mushroom and doing a deeper clean on the steam wand and hot water faucet because i still dont trust that they are fully clean as the were very dirty and gunked up when i got it so im not even fucking with that right now(but i do use the steam wand after the machine is turned off to slowly release boiler pressure so the machine cools down faster, as i only use it once a day i dont want this big boiling hot metal thing on the counter all day, like i want it to cool down as fast as it can and i think it cools down faster if it is depressurized/has the steam removed first)

also i think one of those temperature stickers from the smart espresso profiler guy could be cool(heh) to stick on the group head, as well as a pressure gauge
you can buy a flow control device for the mushroom but i just watched a wired gourmet video on it and he said he didnt like it and the reasons he gave to why i seem to agree with or at least would probably find it as annoying as he does.

and then finally replace/clean/fix the handles/dials/switches as they just feel bad, the springs are clearly worn out and it squeaks when used which is just a wholly unsatisfying experience.

BUT a more direct form of control for the flow/pressure would be nice so idk
thats a future me's problem i guess.

yes i had looked into it but the 2 that are on AB seem really expensive and the cheaper of the 2 options is out of stock
also the difference sizes are confusing
there are some that are 58.4 and 53.3 and then 55 and it would cunt me up the wall to buy the wrong size for $20-$40 + shipping + tax
i also thought about a puck screen but idk thats an entirely other set of questions and worries.

I'm not sure I'd have ever bought the SEP(and accompanying Lunar) for my old flair signature if it wasn't cross machine compatible. Gabor is another real good guy like Mark from Pullman. OG innovators. Feel happy throwing money his way. Anything you buy from here on out should transfer to your eventual flair 58. As far as I understand even an ill fitting paper is better than none. Mine used to creep up the walls and cup the puck a little bit on my pullman. Check on goodbrothers for the exact sizing of your baskets. Probably have to order several hundred to make shipping worth it but that may be the most convenient way for you to get 909s at this point.

Yep. Thats the chinese knockoff. Pressensor is a spinoff of SEP. I think Pressensor did the original software for SEP then spun off his own company a few years later. Can't tell you how well either of those work but my SEP has been rock solid for like 5ish years now? 2 battery changes.

Newfag here, been drinking "rich roast Sainsbury's" instant coffee and while I like it I want to try better things.
Back in my country I used to drink espresso at cafΓ©s now and then and it sure tastes better.
Last year I bought ground Ueshima from the supermarket thinking I could use it as instant, so ended up doing cowboy method but now that I know a bit more I think I didn't really like it because I left the coffee in the mug for too long.
Not wanting to buy equipment for now, would you say I could do a proper cowboy as if I was doing the Hoffmann french press method by filtering with a spoon or something else?
Also, any more decent brands supermarkets usually sell in the UK?
Lastly anyone tried Raw Bean? I think it's the only supermarket one that does decaf using swiss water method that is sold in the supermarket.
Yes, I know supermarket ones are not as good and pre-ground is worse than whole, but I want to try things first. Then I'll probably buy a cheap glass and stainless steel french press they sell at the supermarket.

A French Press may not be the best choice for you.
If you like espresso and cowboy coffee (both strong) I'd recommend either a 1 cup mokka pot or a turkish coffee maker.
If you want to keep trying a variety of things, I'd recommend an aeropress which can do both percolation and infusion brewing (inverted method).

If you want tasty espresso on a budget you'll have to invest at the asbolute minimum $300 into a manual lever epsresso maker (like flair, rok, or robot) and entry level grinder + you'll have to buy whole beans from then on because supermarket pre-ground is too coarse to be suitable for manual espresso.

You can bloom this too (most effecrmtuve w/ darks)β€” do 30-40% volume High at 204 F, wait 40-90s - douse the pot temperature to 176-185 F - and pour the remainder volume; stir large grounds and remove silt at 5'' per instructions, but add the bloom time to the 9'' total. Cowboy variantβ€” add a healthy pinch of BOILED EGGSHELLS in the bloom or at the stir to cut acidity/increase smoothness (particularly effective if you're just brewing high temp in one pour); I like the eggshell thing with light/medium instant powders and moka pots (after brew), easy quality of life thing, just freeze the shells after eating the boiled eggs.

burundi
moka
pretty good but washed cant compete with natural
its not even close
this one has been pretty hard to dial in
generally pretty light, high acid no bitterness
acidic on the back of the palate but rising giving way to vegetal/earthy notes
smokie

noticed a sound coming from my hg1p and was scared it was the gearbox but it was the wiper blades touching the sides of the funnel with built up coffee causing a "whooshing" sound
did some cleaning and the sound went away.
feels good
'za tonight.
thanks for reading my blog :)

I should cut some new wipers for the wug. Guess people just use teflon sheets. Also I've waited so long getting the side bean spout that it now comes with a cremaloop adapter for top tier slow feeds.

>slow feeds
i memed on this alot when people "started" talking about it but now after using my hg1p for almost 10 months i get it
and i get why weber added it to their mk2 versions
a slow feed for the hg1p would actually be huge
for moka or pour over grind sizes its fine because the grind rate is enough to keep up
but when doing espresso it slows down making it feel "suffocated" in a weird way.
but im too lazy to put in a few beans, grind a few beans, put in a few beans, grind a few beans.
i might try it next time just to see.

also its clear that craig lyn/weber very much want/expect you to screw into a large block of wood to weigh it down
im finding i have to clean off the silicon/rubber(?) base because it just doesnt stick to the bench if its even slightly dirty because it will(especially at espresso grind) lift off the bench(probably another reason why slow feed would be beneficial, dumping all the beans in and then starting means it has to chew through alot more at once meaning you have to apply more rotational force or whatever making it more likely to lift off)
which isnt a "problem" but its a bit annoying/unsatisfying.

>Grim.
could be worse.
the bag before this was just acid.
at least this is drinkable.

I have a little moka pot and I pack it full of cafe llave or bustello, and don't bother to preheat heat the water because I like it bitter. I pull it off the burner a bit to extend the brewing time, and don't let it get to the sputtering phase, so it's real strong. smells like chocolate when it first comes out. I drink like 3 cups every morning and smoke a bunch of cigarettes. really gets the bowels going. I don't think caffeine really does anything to me, or actually has an opposite effect, because I'm usually really tired and lazy after, and sometimes go back to sleep for an hour or two after my shit. maybe because I'm ADHD brained, and it's like giving a spergy kid adderall-- it settles then down instead of making them dance and jitter around like a speed freak.

I'm not a connoisseur or anything obviously, but damn I love motor oil coffee.

Bookending this thread with a slightly nicer picture.
This is a pure Robusta I've been drinking for years, always results in an exorbitant amount of crema. Guests say it's undrinkably bitter when I serve it, but in my opinion it's actually more sweet than most medium roast Arabica espresso, and less bitter than the bad filter coffee normies gulp by the can. The beans work in mysterious ways I guess.

I've been drinking it more and I think it was honestly just because I was comparing it to the other one that I really like. Now I'm enjoying it more since I'm not expecting it to be the other one.

>: How do you respond when friends/family make bad coffee for you or make coffee gifts you can't or don't want to use?
State you only drink coffee with lots of sugar and half n half.

When gifted something, anything at all, that you don't wish to have or wouldn't never ever have, just keep it in the house until you can pawn it off on your next houseguest or visitor that would drink that blueberry cobbler flavored coffee you would.not.touch.Then when they rave about it, send them home with the rest of the container. In other words, be polite about gifts.

I just recently returned from Costa Rica. Coffee tends to be bright and medium-light roast there, not my favorite, but I bought the most rare expensive single estate peaberry version I could find for my parents. They raved about the flavor, then went to order some online and about died at the affordabilitty. See, I got something special, what a gift should be, something they enjoyed.
