ok this is the part of the thread where I call you a retard, then you say I’m poor, then I say needlessly wasting money is actually poorfag behavior and allude to africans, then you double down and say wasting doesn’t matter if you’re not poor, others may chime in but at the end of the day you’re objectively masking the subtle notes and engaging in diminishing returns and we’ll never get through to each other
there i saved 5-10 posts of this thread

See you're approaching whiskey from a "value" perspective which in my mind doesn't exist.
Whisky is whisky, enjoy it however you want. I'd personally always recommend drinking ANY whisky you've never had before straight before doing anything else with it. But as long as you've tried it straight first, feel free to mix it however you want. You can get fantastic cocktails with high shelf whisky, just because YOU prefer sipping it straight doesn't make you any better than someone else.
Your preferences, your opinions, your habits, they're all yours and (should be) irrelevant to everyone else.
I'm not here to tell you how to enjoy your whisky, only to tell you that YOU don't get to decide how I enjoy mine, or anyone else's.
Fuck post-modernism.
There are objective rights and wrongs.

Fairly new in the whiskey journey and I have loved Laphraoig 10 so far. I have tried a decent amount of things, some bourbons, ryes, a couple Irish, and one Japanese. Is there any specific direction I should go at this point? Frankly, I'd be fine sipping on what I've tried so far, but I feel like I should look for specific flavors that really suit me. An example is that I also like oaked flavors, am only so-so about sherry, and prefer pot stills if I'm going to have an Irish. Maybe expand on my rye knowledge? I want to try more Japanese as well, due to their unique wood flavors, but they are often quite expensive.

I've found this to be incredibly inconsistent. Some bottles have wonderful flavor and a spicy kick to them that makes it easily worth it. Other bottles are so bland and flavorless I could taste it side by side with JW Red and found the latter more interesting and drinkable. I don't trust people who outright hate it because there's a reasonable chance they just had some from a bad batch.

It's relatively flavorful for an Irish whiskey, but it IS an Irish whiskey, and Irish whiskies are less flavorful on average than Scotches because they are triple distilled.
Redbreast's texture/mouthfeel is actually a big part of its appeal. It's almost creamy and it's lovely.

I have a very strong suspicion that can winkle shit is effectively put in a basement to minimize losses. "95.6" is a very fucking specific and suspicious proof point that makes me think it's dumping very low. During Russell's 15 dumping they were getting hazmat coming out with only dozens of bottles per barrel, and some were even empty, but wild turkey doesn't fuck around. The economics are a lot better if you effectively aren't using real rickhouses as intended, and if you were to do so, you would get a low proof whiskey that would, of course, drink much younger than the 23 year age statement

>Someone give it to me straight is blended malt as good as single malt.
Absolutely not.
The more you blend things, the more interesting character gets blended away.
Does a random blended malt have the potential to be more interesting than a random single malt? Sure. Blend two intensely flavorful single malts together and it'll likely be more interesting than a single malt on the more delicate, flavorless side of things.
But, in general, single malts are better and have the potential to be much better by virtue of not having their interesting individual character blended away.
There are so many fantastic, interesting single malts that there is no reason to be fucking with the inferior blended malt category - especially Johnnie Walker Green Label, which just flat out tastes disgusting.

Are there better options? Of course. Is it top tier whisky? No. Is it "gross" or "disgusting"? Also no.
Not to mention you can go and look up dozens upon dozens of reviews on JW green by experienced whiskey drinkers and they generally agree, it's solid but nothing to write home about, which matches its price.

Going to stick my head out and say Diageo is mildly overhated. Their mass consolidation of the market in scotch is bad, as is their penchant for coloring shit unnecessarily. Like wise they go too hard on saturating the market with inconsistent quality/value yearly specials, but on the whole; most of their flagship distilleries are still good in 90% of cases. Fuck that 380$ mortlach from a couple years back though, total clown show of a release.

My guy, that's an industry wide thing...
> Due to changes in the sherry trade, many distilleries (including Diageo and smaller ones) purchase "seasoned" casks from cooperages. These casks are specifically prepared for the whisky industry, often by having a sweet or fortified wine (like sherry, port, or wine treated with a product like paxarette, a concentrated grape-must product) run through them for a period.

Out of like 50-100 bourbons I’ve tried only one russels reserve single barrel (a one-off) and boxergrail derringer (mostly because of the sherry finish gimmick) tasted unique

It's a lot easier to make a unique scotch since the rules are a lot more open in their regulations. Bourbon requires a minimum of 51% corn and the requirement to use brand new fresh charred oak barrels will limit what any bourbon will taste like to start off with.
If you want more unique bourbon at a more affordable price tag look into stuff that's finished in an interesting barrel.
Widow Jane is one of the easier to find options.

wow ive never been to a whiskey bar, tasting event, liquor store, distillery, or friends house before
>>21641716
was 2slow on delet for edit but yeah I’m aware of bourbon’s requirements. I mean single malts have the requirement of being 100% barley lol but to be fair there is a lot of variation due to the use of peat and yes the reused barrels allowing for more shift
So yeah thanks for the widow jane rec I’ve heard the name but never looked into it. I’ll try it out and anyone else feel free to give recs on this regard
Obviously there’s variation between a wheated or a high rye etc I’m just saying I’ve tried all the buffalo trace sloppa like e h taylor, blantons, eagle rare, etc
And also thread favorites like woodford double oaked, OGD 114, four roses single barrels, elijah craig single barrels, balcones, local distilleries etc
also knob creek, willet pot still, bookers basils 1792 jeffersons m*ker’s m*rk old forester michters bulleit new riff blah blah blah
And yeah some taste more woody than others, some more like corn, but it’s all just facking bourbon. Only “funk” like that of balcones or my aforementioned russel’s single barrel seem to impart unique character and that seems rare outside of the coveted willet purple tops from what I can tell
Also meant to say rabbit hole dareringer in the first post (boxergrail is their rye)

Not excusing their price, just saying it's not that price inflated. (though the 2ndary prices are HEAVILY inflated by taters)

I'm not the one melting tastebuds away with 60+ percent woody mouthwash and then blaming the loss of nuances on society instead of my own body, am I

It’s just bantz with the boyz, I don’t take any of it seriously
Ok, real post- tried an “older” Kilchoman (13 yr) and thought it was very good, but still enjoy their younger releases more. For those that don’t enjoy the peat bombs I could see them enjoying it more (but in that case- why are you drinking Kilchoman to begin with?)

Same. I cut my drinking down from twice a week on average to once a week or even two weeks.
