Poverty or culture?
Do you sample the poorfag food when you travel? Like if you're in the South, would you try chitlins? Or if you were in Japan would you eat the watermelon rind?

Personally I find these things to be very off putting, and the thought of eating this crap makes me lose what little respect I had for their culture.

You can candy them. Just peel, chop and cook in sugar syrup. It has no taste of watermelon tho

I was going to ask why they can't grow it in Japan and then I remember that they do in square format and charge an arm and a leg for them. The Japanese are quite peculiar.

The japanese pick a way to do this or that, and decide that that is the japanese way. Then once it's decided as proper or traditional, you get sad fucks who spend 50 years of their only time on earth "mastering"(read:repeating) growing watermelon in a box a certain way before they commit suicide.

They developed a whole sad culture around living in denial and humoring fast food workers.

The whole society pretends it takes a lifetime to master steaming rice or skewering eels, just so the losers that do it for a living can save face and pretend they're on the level of doctors instead of admitting they're goyslop merchants.

That shit in the webm is exactly what I'm talking about yeah. Will you be better at skewering eel 1 year after starting? Absolutely. Another year? Probably a bit better sure. Another year of dedicating yourself to something so specific, repetitive, and mundane? It's diminishing returns at that point and you probably aren't appreciably better than you were after two years of "mastering" something like that. People make it a large part of their identity and maybe one day they wake up and realize that they've spent a lifetime on something that wasn't worth such an investment.

Watermelon rinds and seeds are high in cucurbitacins, which are very good for clearing out the gut. Maybe that's why it's popular in Japan (health trend)

We smashed the Japs in WW2 precisely because of our superior culture (genetics not withstanding).
It's the ruthless never ending humiliation ritual that makes the West the Best.

Japs are always bowing and simping and appologizing.

Our people are hardened, galvanized, ever vigilant for the chance to seize the initiative and get their turn to wear the boot and do the dirty dance on the face of their enemy.

Standard daily team building exercise to improve worker morale at American businesses. Ostensibly. It's really part of the humiliation ritual that brings out human excellence.

The dancing doesn't make workers more productive, but the ritual is what created the cut throat manager leading the dance. His motivations are entirely personal, he just wants to experience wearing the boot and doing the stepping. He doesn't even realize he's part of natures glorious ballet. He's honing his own replacement.

ironically you're also describing Japanese work culture too. You ever hear about work mandated radio taiso, nomikai Presenteeism? The arbitrary tradition forming and adherence is the same as the humiliation rituals you're describing
The only difference is America stays cut throat, nip stops once you're in: majority at will employment vs lifetime employment. This seems cultural

Japanese are suffering from weak yen due to their dying economy so costs of food keeps increasing and many can no longer afford to eat well at all thus the rinds.
Anonymous No.21646730 >>21646822
These parts would normally be discarded, but some people still use them, so they are sold cheaply in stores.
Pickling melons is fairly common in Japan, but using watermelon rind is quite rare.
In recent years, cut watermelon fruit packs containing only the flesh have become popular, so the "clean watermelon rind" can be obtained through this process.

You are responding to literal shills from China. They have too much free time on their hands and have tens of thousands of shills online who spread very bizarre propaganda.
The whole strawberry thing was a weird campaign a year or so ago where they would send Chinese spies to Japan for the sole purpose of being really obnoxious about eating strawberries and throwing them out.
Then tiktok and 4chan got absolutely flooded with bots calling Japan poor and saying how in China strawberries are pig disgusting pig food with videos of government shills harvesting strawberries and feeding them to pigs.
These people are insane.

you have to remember that for centuries japs weren't allow to leave their villages without permission, they were no different than serfs you'd see in europe or ancient egypt or russia(where serfs had it really bad). but it was much more constrictive in japan, we're talking people who's families lived in a small mountain village for over a thousand years. the fall of rome and the repeated black death plagues were ironically liberating for europeans japs never really had that till the meiji era in the 1860's. under that culture you had to become a master of some mundane task because guess what? your next dozen generations all get to follow in your footsteps so you might as well learn how to master boiling rice because there is nothing else for you

Gaijin don't understand the Japanese "γ‘γ‚ƒγ‚“γ¨ι£ŸγΉγ‚‹" (chanto taberu) concept, which means to eat well. You see, in Japan, it's not enough to simply eat, you must eat well. That is why the chef takes a lifetime to master the grilling of eel.

I live in Japan, I never saw watermelon rinds, ever.
It's like 2 bucks for a few slices, who would buy rinds? Doesn't make sense.

Also watermelon is a luxury product because they only sell Japan grown watermelons. Imported fruits have a huge tariff on them because of the agricultural lobby.

More like Japanese don't understand the concept of diminishing returns. If instead of taking 60 years to only grill eel, you took 2 years each to learn cooking 30 different things, you'd be a better, more well-rounded cook in the end and the insights you get from broadening your horizons would let you to more creative things with the eel itself as you revisited it each time. The japanese would rather be 5% better at cooking one thing and clueless anywhere else than be able to cook 59 other things nearly as well and become a master of cooking, which ironically would make their eel better too in the long run. It's a mindset that deserve ridicule, not praise.
