I'm an easily dazzled weeaboo who has been to Nippon twice, sustaining a healthy erection each time when around the konbini culture, growing particularly fond of vending machines. There's especially something cozy and comforting about knowing you're likely to come across a well-lit and stocked one or two in the middle of nowhere/trail/random suburban alleyway/etc. and can conveniently stock up on some cold or hot drinks.

So naturally I want to ruin the fun and novelty of something I enjoy by turning it into a passive income venture. I really want to own one. It might not be Japanese-style (yet) but that doesn't matter, that was only my inspiration, any machine is fine, I just want to give the people the convenient refreshment they desire. I'm looking at investing in one or two as a pet project.

You want to manage vending machines? In America? I knew a guy that did that on the weekends, he would make a couple hundred I think a week. Been a while. What research have you done? How much is a machine? How much are the snacks?

Come down to Roppongi and meet some Nigerian touts hired by the yakuza who will push you into a bar to be drugged, raped, robbed, and left in the gutter.

If you only accepted electronic payments, wouldn't there be any fools destroying vending machines to steal coins?

What's the point of vending machines in japanese cities when there's always a 24h store around the corner?

Vending machine business seems difficult if you want to sell higher end niche products. Americans purchase from vending machines for two reasons, they are either being impulsive OR they are in a location/situation in which buying from the vending machine is the only option.

This means you would have a challenge. When Americans impulsively buy from a vending machine, they are buying candy, chips, or pop that they are already addicted to. They are slightly hungry and like a drug addict they rationalize why they should spend 2 or 3 dollars on a coke or a small bag of their favorite chips. If that's not the case, then they buy from a vending machine because they're at a work location or a rest area on a road trip and there is no McDonald's or other fast food places nearby where they can get real food.

So, if you're selling niche Japanese foodstuffs in a vending machine in the USA, it needs to either be in a high traffic area, where it might attract weebs and other curious people willing to splurge on something they've never seen before, or it needs to be in some random spot with nothing around. In the latter case, your sales might not be very high. In the former case, you may get some sales, but will likely have a higher installation or rent cost.

I think it could work, but you need to be strategic about it

In Japan unlike in other countries it's legal to just have a business however you want. You can have a vending machine in front of your house and make some money like that and you just have to pay some taxes on it.

No need to open a company, have bullshit regulation, etc.
You can just have a vending machine, contact a company that automatically fills it up, and have some nice passive income.
That's why they're everywhere.

In Japan, there have been cases where wealthy idlers such as real estate owners have found it advantageous from a tax perspective to run some kind of loss-making business.

So it's not actually your business, you just rent out a piece of your property to the vending company but they dump the risk on you?

Have you considered that there's something about Japanese society that allows them to have large quantities of goods and money left unattended, that can't be replicated in the west?

No, retard. You own the vending machine, you own the property, you own the food. You just pay a company to come deliver and stock the food you buy instead of doing it yourself. That clear it up?

I can't tell if that's a joke or not but honestly not a bad idea. It's so annoying when you need shit like that and your only option is the nearest wal-mart or a hardware store, the latter of which are disappearing

They put these in factories and shops, not on random street corners. Workers can get gloves or tape or whatever and their employer gets billed for it.
