I got an air fryer, but it smells like burning plastic.

I read this was “Normal” (wtf) and would go away after a use or two. I’ve been running it at max temp for like an hour total now and it still smells so toxic.

Can I fix this? Is it possibly a defective unit I should refund? Are air fryers just gay?

What kind of air fryer did you buy? Quality matters, here.
Safest bet is to try making something pre-packaged that is easy to air-fry (tater tots or tendies), and taste test to see if they taste fucked up or decent

This highest quality Chinese knockoff that was on sale.
Am I going to die? I used it anyways because I was hungry.

I thought the food tasted good, btw.
I also thought the smell would be gone now, but nope. Ran it for 30 minutes inside then realized I’m stupid and moved it outside. About to finish 30 minutes outside which should bring the total to a maybe 80 minutes.

If the food tasted good, and the smell isn't world-ending, then you're all set and can continue to use it with minimal reprecussions.
Glad we solved this mystery, anon

Imagine building a cheap cooking appliance with cheap plastic and selling it to millions of stupid consoomers. They say it smokes of burning plastics when turned on, you say it's totally normal and to keep using the 100% safe product. China is truly number one.

I mean… my place already smelled and I thought it wasn’t getting worse. I smelled the vessel and smelled nothing.

I actually think it might be a faulty fan.

I actually just fired it up again (almost completely cool) and instantly the smell came out from the vent. I’m pretty sure it’s a bad fan

If I had to guess, maybe something came loose during shipping and is touching the element. Try taking it apart for shits and giggles, see what's going on inside. Lets reverse engineer the thing, find a way to build it even cheaper. Profit.

I know the smell you're talking about. I got a cheap one as a guest and it had a burning plastic like smell for a little while.

Air fryer general tip: clean those things quickly after every use. They will build up and bake in grease pretty quickly if youre not using a liner.

How did they get away with Teflon baskets and how many pet birds have airfryers killed
