Is grocery delivery as good as it sounds? I brushed it off before assuming it was a ripoff like food delivery, but looking into it it'd come down to <$10 per week where I live, feel like you'd easily save that in impulsive purchases. Plus time and gas saved, not having to deal with shit like locked up or hidden items in the store, less risk of missing something on your list.
Like I guess sometimes it's nice to be able to browse and it'd be annoying not getting to pick your own produce, but I feel there's got to be some bigger catch that I'm missing

I would never do it with fresh food and since we don't eat much else, we've only used grocery delivery once and only because there were a pair of deals that were only available on delivery orders and a third deal that made delivery free. That was a few months ago. But!
It was extremely quick. Placed the order and it was brought to our place free of charge in about a half hour.

It's fine if you eat processed boxed shit that won't differ from item to item but if you eat a lot of things made from fresh ingredients, then do you really want a minimum wage worker picking out the better fruits, veggies, and meats? For example, some potato dishes want closely-sized potatoes, or if you're making stuffed bell peppers you're going to want properly and uniformly shaped ones.
A different issue I ran into when I tried it is that places will let you make the purchase and reserve your time slot, but obviously they won't be picking out the items until it's time for delivery, so if something integral to your recipe ends up being sold out then you're shit out of luck. They'll take it off your bill, but if you're planning a salmon dish and they're out of salmon then sucks to be you. If you're in the store then you can browse your options and swap items in your cart on the fly. In the end I'd rather just pick shit out myself.

Agree with you and the other anons that it’s not ideal for produce and fresh meat. Ordered a lot of groceries delivered during Covid from instacart and Amazon fresh, but I stopped with Instacart after the person delivered my food to the wrong address and Instacart wouldn’t do anything about it.

every single thing i can get delivered i do. why waste time in a car and grocery store when i can pay a wagie to do it for 10-15 dollars and stay home and shitpost on 4chan?

I don't do it, I've got two within walking distance. But my dad does and if they don't have something they'll just substitute it with something pretty random. I wouldn't want that chance.

my store has this like drive-thru area around the side of the store where you park your car in a bay and they wheel out your groceries pre-picked in a crate, you just put your groceries in the trunk of your car from the crate and drive off.

it's also completely free if you arrive during off-peak hours or when they aren't busy,

If you're getting delivery straight from your local butcher at cutting room floor prices then it's great. Otherwise it's almost as much of a scam as Doordash/Grubhub/Ubereats

where I live the delivery cost is negligible at best and the amount of time saved is crazy compared to going to the store and then hauling that shit back home yourself
The online prices aren't even higher than in-store prices, in some cases they're even lower. Sure you're only saving like 2 cents per egg by buying online but it adds up eventually.

yeah that's the main value proposition of grocery delivery. It prevents impulse buys. If you can plan out all of your meals for a week, and order enough food so you don't need to do other orders, it absolutely pays for itself. I'm the kind of person who will go to the grocery store planning to get $20 or $30 worth of stuff, a handful of items, and end up spending over $100. Grocery delivery would save me a lot. The only reason I don't use it is because I have nothing go on in my life and I genuinely enjoy getting in my car, driving to the grocery store, perusing the items, and buying new things.

If you hate driving or there's a lot of traffic and annoying people at your local grocery store then yeah it's worth 10 bucks

I never order because I hate randoms coming to the house and I kind of enjoy grocery shopping, as long as I'm there when the store opens and out in less than 30 minutes. Our family subscribed to a service back in the early 2000s when my parents were busy and I can see it being useful if you have a large family and buy a lot at once.

I don't want someone else picking out my produce. Sometimes I find the only good head of broccoli in the whole produce section. I've done the delivery thing and was always disappointed with their choices and substitutions.

I ordered it a few times because of discount promos and the quality of the vegetables was better than in the average super market. But I guess that depends on the supply chain of whatever service you are using.
I wouldn't pay extra for delivery since I have like 5 stores directly on my commute

What's the scammy part though? Doordash the scam is that you're buying shit you don't need at a big markup, groceries are something you need at a small markup

If you're cooking the potatoes whole or mostly whole as part of the preparation then yes, you do need them similar sizes. Fondant potatoes and twice-baked are two that immediately come to mind. If one potato is twice as big as the other then it won't cook at the same time. That's a free cooking tip from me to you.

Form matters in dishes beyond your current cooking level. But you need to learn to crawl before you can walk. Once the basics come naturally to you, more complex dishes become possible. I genuinely hope you get there one day, but running from progress isn't helping you.
