"Dude just make your own sub sandwiches!"
>Mhh yes I'll take half a pound of that meat, half a pound of that meat, and half a pound of that meat
>And half a pound of those two kinds of cheeses
>Going to need to buy some pickles but can't use those cheap vlassic gherkins or they'd ruin my sub
>Next you can't cheap out on the buns so it's to the bakery for a fresh loaf
>A fresh onion
>Bag of spinach
>assume you've already got some balsamic vinegar/sauce/salt and pepper at home
>Go to cashier

That'll be 47.69 cents after tax. Next is your labor cost of gutting the bread, assembling the sandwich and slicing it for portions.

You better want another sandwich in about a week as well or half the ingredients will be wasted.

Maybe in 2010 before they jacked deli meat prices but not anymore.

Go to the lunch meat aisle, lb of sliced turkey for $5 - $6, 1 fresh hoagie roll from bakery, $1 max, or get a loaf for $2. Ask for mayostard packets.

That's why I like subway. I only go come into town and go grocery shopping every month when the weather is good. That's about 1 hour 25 minutes away. There is no way I can keep all the ingredients that they have for a great sandwich fresh at home like they do.

Also, Subway has always been committed to providing extremely fresh sandwiches even out in rural locations. In 20 minutes I can get to the nearest Subway. So for me, it's either that or the diner and sometimes I just want to eat and go instead of talking to people for an hour while waiting for a basic sandwich and fries.

Puhleese.
This past spring in honor of Mardi Gras, I made a round sub that easily fed 6 people from a single trip to Publix. I bought a single jar of Central Grocery branded olive giardinera, another jar of grilled red peppers, used like 1/4th of the jars to totally saturate the bottom and top of a large sesame round boule, and filled my sandwich with simple boar's head mortadella, genoa, and tavern ham. Store brand smoke provo and swiss.

The jar was oversized and $8, but certainly had that much in just olive content.

But I'd rather go get Port of Subs or Capriotti's for that once or twice a month time where I'm going to eat a sub sandwich. Yes, it's actually a bad or difficult thing. Just like I don't meal prep so I don't have to eat at my desk with the same old leftovers and never go outside, I don't want to eat six of the same sandwiches days in a row.

I really don't understand how you people that eat the same thing constantly don't have an existential breakdown about the bleakness of life. Like, I'd swallow a bullet if I couldn't even break up the shitty daily routine of work with some variety in my meals or getting away from the office. The same footlong at lunch at my desk or in the workplace cafeteria would probably make me want to actually cry by Wednesday.

If that's the case, then fine, just go out to a sandwich shop. Nobody is saying otherwise. The whole point of it being cheaper to make sandwiches yourself hinges on the assumption that you're going to make multiple sandwiches. That's always going to be a factor when it comes to grocery costs. I'm sure that you have things you eat routinely too that are cheaper for you to buy in bulk. Most people are not eating completely different things for every single meal, every single day. That's ridiculous and it's not affordable for most people. Just because YOU only eat one sandwich a month doesn't mean that it's not cheaper for somebody who takes a sandwich to work everyday to make their own.

Those are barely options that differentiate the sandwich. I already said Subway sucks, but I don't want to eat six fucking footlongs.

I don't mind the one or two times a month I need to "go out" to pick up a good sandwich from somewhere. And most people spend at least 8-10 hours a day away from their home for a thing called work, so you're not just making it in the comfort of your own home.

Even if you don't like eating the same thing every day, move past the example of a sandwich and apply the logic of buying ingredients for multiple meals to shopping at large. When you cook a meal, are you going out and buying literally every single ingredient from scratch, every time? Of fucking course not. You buy a bag of onions, you can use that for multiple DIFFERENT meals. You have a pantry stocked with salt, pepper, other seasonings, oils, vinegars, etc - those can be used to cook nearly any dish. Maybe sandwiches aren't an example that fits your life, because sandwich ingredients admittedly aren't very versatile, there's probably not a lot else you would use deli meat for - but when you're shopping in general, you should be buying ingredients with the forward thinking that you will be able to use them multiple times. You're too fixated on the sandwich aspect and missing the forest for the trees here. When I wanna eat curry, and buy a bag of rice, I'm not thinking "great, I'm gonna have to eat curry every day for the next month". I can make curry, I can make jambalaya, I can make fried rice, I can make rice pudding, I can make chicken and rice soup, and so on. I'll use onions for most of those things, I'll use my pantry ingredients for pretty much all of them. I'll use chicken for a couple of them, so I can buy more chicken than I'll use at once - and still get a variety of meals out of them.

>I'm sure that you have things you eat routinely too that are cheaper for you to buy in bulk.
Honestly, not really. Maybe in a few cases. It very much also depends on if you're single and living alone or not. If you have a roommate, girlfriend/boyfriend, or kids, I'm all for the argument of buying more bulk stuff. That'll sort itself out. But as a single guy, I'm staring at my fridge and freezer, and unless I eat the same ingredients just slightly shuffled around to the point they're basically the same thing, food goes to waste.

Hell, I paused halfway through this post to look in my freezer and some of the stuff I put in there to "save for later" is well over six months old or more and is probably ready to be thrown out at this point, or I have to force myself to thaw and use it even if it sounds bad.

Typically I only eat once or twice a day. Always dinner at home or out, and then lunch at work if I'm hungry or have time. I like to get out for lunch and not be trapped in the building, so I'm not bringing a sandwich so Mr. Shekelstein can make me do more work at my desk.

I've said in multiple replies that Subway sucks, so we agree on that. And no, I'm not a great cook, but typically if someone's bringing sandwiches to lunch every day, there's only so much they can do. Adding a new kind of mustard to your sandwich with all of the same ingredients in >>21673236 doesn't really change it dramatically.

We agree on finding a good sandwich shop. The only times I'd eat Subway at this point in my life would be if it were the only food option rolling through a small town and I was starving, or maybe an airport. And even then, I doubt it. Haven't had Subway since 2012 tops.

lol, that has nothing to do with being single or not. I'm terminally single and I routinely eat the same things multiple days in a row. in fact, it's the only way I'm able to afford eating as a single guy. if I buy a whole pack of chicken, I can't eat that all at once, but I'm not gonna throw half of it out. in fact, I'd say if you live with other people it's probably easier to eat a variety of things, because you're not going to have as much leftovers/food waste.

I like variety too, but at some point, especially if you have a budget, you have to balance that with routine. and as people said above, there are a lot of ingredients that are versatile enough to be used for many different dishes, so if you put some thought into your shopping you can still get variety out of the same ingredients. it's not really something I care about that much because I don't mind eating repeat things, but it's possible. for example, I'll buy a whole pack of chicken drumsticks, roast them with some potatoes and veggies, there's my meal. but I don't think cooked drumsticks reheat that well, so the next day I'll take the meat off and make a soup, and boom, got something totally different. now me, I'll just stick that pot of soup in the fridge and eat out of it for the next few days no problem, but if you don't wanna do that, you can freeze it in portions and have something to pull out for those lazy days you don't wanna cook.

I don't know who needs to break this to you man, but not wanting to eat the same or similar foods for months at a time is not normal behaviour. I think the vast majority of people at least have SOME routine in what they eat, or at the very least are okay with repeating things every few days or weeks, let alone MONTHS. I don't even know how you could go months without repeating some foods and not be spending ridiculous amounts of money to keep that up. it's just not feasible, and frankly, most people just don't care that much.

Actually, for the most part, outside of spices and a condiment here or there, almost always that's a yes.

I wrote in >>21673313 that if you live with someone else, it's so much easier. But I'm never, ever going to buy a bag of onions. As a single dude I'll probably buy one onion because two are gonna go bad before I get around to them.

To be fair, I only cook for special occasions or when I really want something specific I can't find anywhere nearby. My other problem is I like getting out at night after work and not just coming home to sit alone and cook. Eating dinner out just two or three times a week makes all of that food more and more likely to go bad or at least become unpalatable by the time you get around to it. I tried the "buy in bulk and cook at home" thing and realized I was throwing out more food than I was actually saving money.

Ok man. If you don't cook very often, then of course none of this is applicable to you. But I don't know what kind of bubble you live in, but most people can't afford to eat out constantly. I don't know why you're trying to argue that because of your extremely specific and niche lifestyle, grocery shopping and home cooking is just invalid for everybody. It's an extremely myopic way of viewing things. It's okay to just say, hey, I'm not the average person. What works for others doesn't work for me. Good for you. But you're not the median.

Yeah, I'm absolutely not eating chicken soup days in a row as my only food. I guess maybe it depends... are you like 21 years old, poor as shit, and it's your only option to get by? You get a pass. I used to eat meatballs on sale from the grocery store with food pantry broccoli for like every meal back then. But I was also sleeping directly on an old futon pad on the floor and my only possessions were an old 3DS, a lamp, and my clothes. Now that I'm an adult, I can't eat the same sloppa daily.

>I don't know who needs to break this to you man, but not wanting to eat the same or similar foods for months at a time is not normal behaviour.
We disagree. The only people I know IRL who do this either are dirt poor or have autism. Like, yeah, I know a guy who only eats steak, eggs, and cheeseburgers, but he'll panic if someone hands him a taco because he thinks they're icky. Or maybe I know some really intense gym bros who just fuel their body and don't care about flavor.

Part of keeping life entertaining is switching up your diet and trying new things, especially when the rest of life takes away anything outside of the routine.

I'm not even saying eat out constantly, and there's also largely varying degrees of eating out. A sit-down restaurant every night is too expensive. There's a few things that are very versatile, but for the sake of this thread, I'd argue sandwich stuff isn't that versatile. I don't claim to be the world's best cook. I can guarantee the deli down the road makes better soups than I can, and anything I do isn't going to be better than Campbell's. I also don't really want to fucking bother, it's soup. I don't have the time.

>And soups freeze well so you don't need to eat that more than once or twice a month.
I really wonder how much freezer space the people here all have. I have a standard sized fridge/freezer. It's all I get to work with. I have a bag of chicken, a bag of fish, a few bags of frozen veggies, a frozen pizza, ice, Costco hot dogs I got by mistake, and some frozen burritos and it's almost full. I have some older frozen leftovers and they've been in there so long that heating them up sounds gross.

I genuinely think the people here who suggest how long you can freeze things just happen to live in the midwest with huge chest freezers down in your basements.

Buy a whole chicken, buy a pork joint, buy some eggs, buy some tinned fish. Now you have four different types of protein to go in sandwiches. When making dinner cook more than you need and put leftovers in the fridge.

Ignore pointless additions to sandwiches like cucumber, lettuce, watercress. Go for long lasting veg like cabbage, carrots, Brussels sprouts and onions. These will also be used in dinner recipes so get used up quickly. Highly nutritious and add texture to sandwiches. Rotate your pickles. One week do beetroot, next week Piccalilli. Slather the little pickings with some honey mustard, bang on equivalent to the rotisserie chicken they have at subway, but actually tastes like chicken instead of nothing.

Fast food slop isn't the point at all. It's about eating at a restaurant or making yourself a variety of meals throughout the week. Eating nothing but the same exact thing every day is for either extremely poor people or smoothbrained folks.

Making mayo takes 10 minutes for a month's supply if u have an immersion blender. Bread does not take a lot of work either, for the hours of time from start to finish you're only putting in maybe 15-20 minutes of actual work in the process. You can just fuck off and do other shit while it's proofing and baking and cooling.

You could also buy those deli meats from a deli service counter at whatever quantity of pounds you want and end up with a lower total.

Idk, OP. $50 isn't a lot of money. I wouldn't even notice fraudulent charges that small.

The whole production chain gets checked regularly. It's cheaper to follow the standards than it is to cheat on the scale of an international franchise.

What about an infomercial franchise?
