Man and boy is a pretty common/popular pairing including by people here. It's not my preference. I like sho with sho. But I don't mind it, especially when it's an older brother as is functionally the case here. And no, the homo isn't just for jokes and I don't think you can say it's baity given the ending. The homo is the main point of the entire manga, so yes, it's sometimes played for humor. But it's also just as often a source of sweetness and drama. We like Gon and Killua here and their relationship is used for humor sometimes and is way easier to accuse of being bait.

This isn't a fujo thing, though. In romance in general, the intended target of affection gets most of the depth while the character the audience is expected to relate to is usually left relatively unexplored. You can see this in both sides of hetshit too. And it makes sense. No one reading a romance story wants to spend a lot of time on the character they're not attracted to. You're only going to get both sides fully fleshed out either when the romance is in addition to a larger story, in which case it's often the love interest that winds up shallow and tacked on. You definitely don't cede a lot of screentime to the self-insert character but at the same time, unless we're talking those trashy Twitter webmangas where it's just POV blank slates, you have to give the MC enough personality and agency that he functions well within the story you're telling and that the romance with the LI is enjoyable and believable as a result but of course never at the cost of the reader's self-insertion/roleplay. Kouhei falls a little below the threshold.

I'd love to be proven wrong about the author being female but gut feeling screams female. Who knows at this point, probably won't come out and confirm it anytime soon..

well i have. i remember reading one that stuck with me mostly because it was mostly smut but also had a great hook and story. basically, was about two teenage boys falling in love in the countryside (one of them was from the city) and how their romance is doomed due to puberty, societal backlash, aging, all that stuff.

the manga ended with them biding each other farewell and promising to reunite some time as friends or something only for the author to say they never met each other again after that. it was bizarre seeing a smut end so bitterly but i appreciated the effort.

cant find it for the life of me though. i also could be misremembering a lot about it hence why it's hard to find.
