Volumes 1 through 3 are about cute anime girls with awesome weapons attending a battle shonen academy and fighting demons with a legitimately threatening antagonist faction growing in the background. The creator died like midway through 3 and the moment 4 starts you can tell the new writers in charge have zero clue what to do with his ideas. Volumes 4 and 5 are meandering, contrived, idiotic borderline filler and such an insultingly far cry in quality from the previous volumes that it combined with the ongoing company drama at Roosterteeth managed to completely divide the fanbase. Volume 6 isn't great (mainly due to the fact that production funds were being funneled into Gen;lock and we all know how that turned out) but it was decent enough in comparison to 4 and 5 that the fanbase returned with renewed interest. The first half of Volume 7 (the start of a highly anticipated arc) is genuinely really good and probably the best the show's been since 3 and it completely shits the bed around two thirds of the way through. Volume 8 is the consequence of this and is widely considered the worst volume due to EXTREMELY contrived and heavy-handed writing that ruins a large portion of the cast by making them act out of character to keep the plot going. Volume 9 is filler but it's far more enjoyable than 4, 5 or 8 because you can tell it was RT's last hurrah. Volume 10 is being planned, apparently.
