Smiling Friends had a lot of complaints for using the word "Retard" bleeped, South Park had that "Board Girls" episode which also pissed people off. I don't think we'll ever get something on the level of Drawn Together or World Peace again but it's worth an effort to do something most other shows aren't doing anymore.

Genuinely promote radical opposition to the powers that be. I don't mean making a few "haha capitalism/the president sucks" jokes, or presenting an allegory for fighting against the government/corpos that makes a few topical references to camouflage that it is written in a way that renders it far removed from real life relevance. Those are what every big corporation puts in their media to appeal to youthful rebellion in a superficial way while remaining as unsubversive and toothless as possible, and is usually done to distract audiences from counterrevolutionary and reactionary themes within the same media. What I'm asking is for a cartoon to actually promote revolutionary action, and spotlight nuanced portrayals of people with subversive views. This is never gonna happen in mainstream cartoons though.

It's all about the setup. Like, a cartoon where everyone says fuck all the time runs out of shock for saying fuck. But if no one ever says it until once at the end it is a big surprise.

Having the protagonist scream nigger just makes you seem like a racist most of the time. It's not edgy if you are just having the characters push your niche beliefs.
The ironic bit is that the average person whose idea of edgy humor is slurs or making fun of trannies, can still be trivially offended without even being edgy.

They also will tend to take deep offense if you were to make jokes about their own sacred cows.

Simply being counter to the mainstream won't make you edgy either. If you make your character a honest servant of god who is celibate and this is treated 100% seriously/respectfully, that would go against what's popular in some media (depends on the context), but by its very nature it wouldn't make you edgy at all.
