This show is so trash. I wish someone would just pay him to make a 2D hotel transylvania cartoon instead of letting him make passion projects like this. Mavis and her family going on cute all ages adventures is where his talent truly lies.

Genndy Tartakovsky only ever hits a wall when he's dealing with time paradoxes, and Unicorn was his most ambitious cartoon yet from a narrative standpoint. I'm all for the guy getting to make more original ideas rather than digging up his past projects, but he just needs to work to his strengths (action, tonal suspense, slapstick humor, etc.) and try COLLABORATING with seasoned writers who can actually make sense of his vague concepts if they're any more convoluted than your typical "cat & mouse chase."

Its one of those situations where nobody greenlit it at the time and then the ideas he had which were novel became passรฉ and so he began to subvert his own ideas to keep it fresh without reinforcing what they were replaced with.
Which led the show to being in tis current messy state.

This is why I don't listen to people online. You're told one thing and literally the opposite happens.
I thought this was gonna be a hit with 5 seasons but nobody cares I guess.
The animation was top notch though, kinda confused to why it didn't catch on.

Cartoony animation doesn't work with serious stuff unless it's as stylized and unique. It honestly feels like that time when SpikeTV greenlit a bunch of cartoons from Nickelodeon creators and artists and all those shows just fell flat, they looked good (except Gary the Rat) and were stylized (NOT Gary the Rat), but they had awful to mid writing.

For example there's a reason there hasn't been a super successful attempt of an adult Ren and Stimpy reboot because it doesn't work as an adult show because they aren't held back and aren't as creative getting around the rules.
The fun of having adult jokes snuck in was because they had to get creative and actually think, with adult cartoons you can just do whatever within the TV14-MA rules and it just loses its charm and humor. That stuff is only funny if it's like a 4 minute video, not 22 minutes.
It's why I prefer they get really experimental with Adult animation, show me something I've never seen before. Stop making comedy dramas and wannabe Family Guy clones. And quit making faux anime crap and copying what the Japanese do.
That's why when there's an adult cartoon it always takes either the Family Guy route or Vivziepop route.
I just hope Pinkie Davis's new Fox show breaks that trend.

I rewatched this a little while ago because enough time had passed since I last seen it. All the problems I had with it originally were still the problems with it I had on my second rewatch. This show's plot becomes total fucking dogshit the moment they live the city, get on that retarded pirate ship, go back to the city, go and meet Otto, leave the city again, go into the Negative Space dimension only to again cut BACK to the city just to go back to the Negative Space dimension and it ends on a cliffhanger

When your best set location is the victorian city that you keep cutting back to it that is a sign that maybe we should focus on this one local.

My theory is that the Elven Society existed long before pockets of human civilization began expanding into their territory thats why I always find it strange how there is an interconnected railroad that leads from the city to the Elven compound and the Elves dont consider this a blantant violation of their territory being expanded upon by humans. My only theory is that the Elves likely see the railroad as a path to human civilization and as long as humans stay in their side of the industrialized zones and dont expand further into their territory there is no problem since Edric is with the Unicorn.

He's a grossly underutilized character because Merlin is a fucking retard who caused the negative energy monster to take control of his Ex wife and he refused to take responsibility for it deeming it to be Unicorn's permanent responsibility.

Its all one gigantic complex allegory for Merin refusing to sign the divorce papers and pay child support.

The annoying thing is that the nugget of an idea at the center of the show (ordinary people get bodysnatched into crazy millenia-old magic war and have to deal with the consequences) is great and has so much potential for interesting storytelling and character arcs and they do almost NOTHING with it because it immediately sidesteps the issue for all but one character, and even for that character they wrap up the conflict early into the season.

It also doesnt help how the latter half of S2 of Primal and all of Unicorn were not good and I could feel the crunchtime in regards to both since both projects felt like they were being worked on at the same time its why how after Spear beats the viking were taken on that horrible side trip with the Egyptian Queen who has no personality outside of just being a bitch.

It looked nice and started off promising the first few episodes, the show's only saving grace from then on were the occasional funny moments. It doesn't surprise me it doesn't get much discussion but what does is that it wasn't renewed, it did well view wise and streaming. It really felt like Genndy was trying to cram in as much as he could in the case that show wouldn't get renewed or whatever honestly.
