It was fun and cute, gorgeous animation, but the third act heavily carries the whole thing. I do like that its a film where the main protagonist hides a secret that does actually hurt her relationship with friends and family (as short lived as it was) instead of being instantly accepted like Pixar and Disney movies.
But so much from everything else is just alright. You can tell the movie was retooled from an R-rated film to a standard Netflix family movie by how several scenes are characters delivering exposition on the world, how they feel, and their flaws. Like they cut out many scenes showing those flaws and emotions, and decided to just say it to the audience, so they get the message. And the woman who raised them is so nonexistent in the movie that she may as well have been cut out. She's like in 3 scenes, and yet she is responsible for everything in the movie. Though maybe they saw that generational trauma is overplayed in animation and decided to move away from that. Maybe not the worst call. It's so funny how this and Elio both release the same day and they are both original films that retooled their entire movie after getting further along with it. Just goes to show sometimes you need to stick with what you got.
But I will give it extra credit for having good music and a good enemies-to-lovers subplot for once in Netflix's life (and a straight one? Inconceivable). Animation deserves to go to the big screens but plot wise it is 100% a Netflix movie.

They could have easily ended the film with the heroines either healing the demon world into a decent place or turning the demons into part human too so they could live normal lives. For a very long time, they had zero interest in courting overseas audiences and would actively police attempts to distribute their stuff overseas. I liked it a lot (zoey is best girl and has the best moments). But anyone else feel like the ending was retarded? Rumy learns to embrace who she really is as part demon despite there being nothing good about being part demon (given what we're shown) and in the end they just seal off the demon world, making the whole conflict around wether demons can be good basically irrelevant. I also kind of wished some scenes were paced out a little better, it's hard to explain but some scenes felt like they went by way too fast, like the doctor visit, the scenes with Rumy and Celine, and especially the last third, but most scenes in functioned well on their own, mainly the comedy stuff. Also, was Rumy a rape baby? How the fuck does a half-human half-demon exist? And why choose her to be a devil hunter?

I can see that, and that's probably what the intention was. It just seemed more like a "This is who I am and i accept it" type of moment, especially since she keeps the marks at the end of the movie like she's proud of them. I'm more annoyed at how little information we get about how demons work and if there's other people like Jinu. IMO that was more like accepting a disability or deformity. Like an actual personal flaw that she was afraid to be judged by, more than something that would benefit her if he saw it in a different light.

I've now watched this and wish it was a two parter, end the first with Rumi going burn it all down and confronting her adoptive mother then pad out the second half with Rumi actually saving her friends from the demon king's voice before the big end of the world concert as well as properly embracing her demon half instead of just randomly losing the physical changes (eyeball and hand) in the final song.

The plot progression was very fast in all respects. Yeah, there were probably budget and production constraints, but the characters needed more interiority, more clear reflection happening.

Honestly it's solid. Has a much better mix of "cringe", action, and character dynamics than the works you mentioned. I really liked the film for what it was, basically lightweight fun entertainment with some nice visuals.

My sole problem with the film is the conflict over Rumi's reveal was resolved too quickly. If it had happened earlier in the film, we could have gotten some nice Rumi v. Mira angst, maybe with Zoey and Bobby trying to be peace brokers. Maybe even Mira going after Jinu on her own.

And yeah, I wouldn't mind a sequel.
