Australian humor has been one of the most refreshing things to see. It has an edge to it that American comedy just lacks, and by edge I don't mean like swears or using slurs, but by saying just completely unhinged things that no American would ever think of.

Australian edge is more like Oneyplays than liberal tranny edge or conservative 'i've been silenced' humor

But there is an oddly vibrant animation scene down under. Flying Bark is Aussie based as well.

The ABC has many pilot programs. But few get positive buzz and make it onto TV.

So the best 10% end up catering to US studios. You can make your pilot but you arenโ€™t getting your show until without moving or talking to Hollywood.

Probably because itโ€™s true. Their animation industry is a bit like their cars before General Motors pulled the plug on them: theyโ€™d only release one on the international market every 5 to 7 years but when they did it was pretty good to very good and was just fun.

No but I'm looking at getting into it and my focus is 2D so I don't know much about the 3d studios. I figure they're CG/VFX and gaming focused and parallel to the 2d field.

We have Princess Bento, a division or subsidiary or whatever of Bento Box and they work on smiling friends. We have other small studios doing stuff you haven't heard of, and other studios doing more advertisement and client-based work (eg studio showoff and truba, the founders of each used to work together, have both done work for american networks).
We have an animation industry networking organisation but I haven't been to an event yet. We also have loopdeloop for up and coming animators to show small loops.

Modern Australian media isn't very distinctly Australian, not in the same way that Japanese media is distinctly Japanese or French media is distinctly French. Which is kinda weird because in the '80s and '90s Australian media was /very/ distinctly Australian, but then became very globalized overnight in the '00s.

Agreed. Thatโ€™s why LibNats have lost two elections in a row. That being said, the few who do have a crack at small studios and succeed never last. Could never get more than a few hours into it, but I do feel sorry for people who have been waiting for the Hollow Knight sequel. Does it really take that long to make a Metroidvania sequel?
