Anon you should probably just check the show out before you get spoiled too much. Peridot doesn't show up until the second half of the first season just as a heads up. Also there's a guy on this board that really oversells her, I like her a lot but she's not the -only- good thing to come out of the show. A lot of the gems are fun and it explores some surprisingly mature subjects (mostly frontloaded in the first season but still).

My memory of SU is that seasons 1-2 were good, and then I stopped caring so much after that. I still kept up with it out of habit. The movie was pretty shit, but /co/ seems to love it. I enjoyed Future but /co/ seems to hate it. Are seasons 3-5 as mediocre as I'm remembering?

The first half of season 3 is good then quality-wise falls off a cliff almost exactly at the midpoint. Season 4 is the worst season of the show, it has a good middle and closing arc but everything outside of those sucks. Season 5 was the show starting to find its footing again, but then they found out midway through production that they wouldn't get any new seasons so the back half is VERY rushed because they had to wrap things up that they thought they'd have a lot more time to work towards.

The characters in those episodes are written to be intentionally kind of awkward because of the shit they're going through in the background that isn't fully clear yet. Meanwhile Steven is this genuinely sheltered kid treating everything like some Saturday morning cartoon and it just makes him rub everyone the wrong way. But yeah on a first watch they kind of suck as an introduction, Frybo and Cat Fingers are the first episodes that actually starts to make the characters feel interesting.
