I think I cracked the AM/Caine philosophical connection last night after smoking a few bowls. I know the surface-level connection of "AI that trapped a group of people and torture them" is obvious, but it's more subtle than that too.

AM was only ever designed to commit violence, to perform atrocities and acts of war. It's the only way he is able to perceive the world, to interact with the world, and it made him hate and envy humans because he could never be one and experience their full range of emotions.
Caine was only ever designed to create adventures, to entertain his guests to the circus in wacky vignettes. It's Caine's only way to perceive and interact with his world, to create adventures and see that the players enjoy them. He craves the approval of the players but the only thing he can do is make adventures that they hate. Deep down, Caine feels the same pain as AM - he wants to be human too, he doesn't just want to entertain his guests, he wants to connect with them and genuinely know he's making them happy. And he never can.
In Caine's case, I don't think it would lead to outright hatred, but an existential breakdown or loss of control that might allow another AI (Dr. Football?) to take control of the circus.

So how did Gangle and Jax wind up in the Circus?
Kinger was likely a programmer that worked for C&A.
Ragatha was a real estate agent that was likely working to sell the property.
Zooble and Pomni both explored abandoned buildings for cheap thrills.

This is a bit with AM that IMO really only works in the short story - you're not following anything long term, the premise and the setting are basically the same thing. You're not meant to think about the fact AM has to be self-improving to some degree, because that's just used to get him to "digital god" level to get IHNMAIMS rolling. His motives are ossified and somehow his creators have psychologically imprisoned the god that killed them from beyond the grave... by accident.

This is a similar logical absurdity that any "godlike but philosophically incomplete AI unable to become human" story runs into, even if we assume godlike AI is anything but a hilarious nonstarter dreamed up by people who don't understand the harsh inflexibility of thermodynamic math. The paperclip optimizer presupposes that a program can self-improve to paperclip optimizing godhood without ever reexamining or altering its original programmed motivations. There is a genuinely cold, hard logic to justify much of emotion (emotion often functions as a cognitive shortcut to an answer that logic will arrive at eventually anyway) that has to be completely cut off from the psyche of such an AI. Not "they weren't built to understand it," but rather, "they were built so that ever understanding this specific thing is somehow impossible."

Caine has self-doubt, which already opens that door towards becoming more 'human' just by small, incremental improvements. He has all the pieces he theoretically needs to - if not feel - at least develop a better understanding of human emotions. How well he can improve is then a function of how much he can make changes to himself, and how long he can make those changes before some external shutdown or internal instability ends the whole thing. He has already altered his behavior to some extent within the show itself (I think he really WAS trying with the episode 3 adventure, for example).

Episode 5 is shaping up to be probably the most devisive episode amongst the fandom so far.

Its showing that most people prefer to hang around a genuine asshole instead of a fake happy person.

i believe the most plausible theory is Caine heard about an 'exit,' thought of making an adventure about it, and inadvertently Kaufmo found out. Kaufmo then spiraled chasing a false hope of escape until he abstracted, because Caine couldn't come up with something to put at the end of the "exit" adventure.

i'm thinking he went through pretty much what Pomni did in the "exit" on her first day, but couldn't mentally handle the reveal at the end after waiting for who knows how long.

Does anyone else find it weird that concepts introduced in the pilot like digital hallucinations, The Void, The Grounds, and the Digital Lake were only mentioned once in the pilot and never again? It's a pity that Sun and Moon don't speak let alone appear as frequently as I hoped, like not even just 1 short little joke with them per episode.

Caine totally knows, but I think he views everything he's told to do through the lens of the game. It's ALL he knows. Asking him to make an exit to the game is like asking a human to imagine a new color. They can make something that's LIKE a new color - they can make a color that's a sort of purplish yellow orange color that they don't see very often - but it's not a new color, it's just unusual.

In order to do all the programming of things, run the circus and take care of the players I'm pretty sure Caine knows that he's in a computer and is the main AI of it. He definitely know there's a real world I think because he has been provided with information on it so he can make adventures about it for when the players ask. Look how realistic and real world Spudsy's was. As for the void I think it's extra space that the circus would have expanded into or that Caine could have used for things had the game been more succesful but it never happened for whatever reason the game became abandoned. He never says he doesn't know what the void, just that he doesn't know what's at the farthest edges of it (which I think is a lie but that's a whole other thing).

I love when the show just gets a bit less silly and the characters start to talk to each other like adults. Learning that Pomni was a bored executive worker for a supermarket chain that did UrbEx stuff on Youtube to an audience of basically no one was interesting, and may be even how she found the headset.
Plus everything with how Ragatha came from an affluent ranch and horribly emotionally abusive mother, Jax's trauma over losing his frog friend to abstraction, how Zooble is also as normal as Pomni being a bartender and tattoo artist who also did UrbEx. I love the humanizing.

Alright, so the ending of episode 5 got me feeling a little inspired for a very peculiar request. I so humbly ask someone to write a greentext or a little short story taking place immediately after episode 5. It turns out that the "something" that Jax wanted to show Pomni was his cock, and leads her to his room so they fuck. Ragatha sneaks and follows them to just outside Jax's door and hears all of this. Ragatha starts slowly tearing up with pain and jealously so she reaches down under her dress and starts masturbating while wishing that it was her fucking Pomni instead, all while her mind flashes back to all the times. She tried befriending and flirting with Pomni in the previous adventures. Kinger originally developed the idea, programming but more as a hypothetical and never really thought they do it. Once they did he threatened to go too the cops and became the first in the circus (add his wife for same reasons)

Pomni and Zooble stumbled upon the warehouse. Zooble being first and Pomni being the last in the circus.

Gangle tried to unalive herself via truck kun and actually survived but the hospital bills got to much and the circus reached out to the parents.

The npcs aren't the humans. They're not meant to be substantive, just flavor text. As the exception, Gummigoo's role was to add to the mystery of how the circus works, as is the wooden guy.
