I personally think it’s important in certain contexts such as explaining certain feats that may not make sense in how they appear. However, they must be consistent with the character’s overall capabilities on average or be regulated to very rare (basically one-off) circumstances. For example, you just can’t give some dude, whose average feats appear at most city level, multiversal+ scaling via statements because this one sentence implies he is multiversal (especially if it contradicts his overall capabilities he’s shown). Like imagine you see a guy struggling to punch a steel door open, but then some one-off statement said he had infinite strength from something else or he beat a guy with infinite strength. That opens the way to ridiculous shit like multiversal Kratos. So mainly statement scaling shouldn’t be heavily relied upon unless it’s backed up by sufficient feats and it comes with correct context that doesn’t contradict the story or the character’s actual average power.

There's three types of statements:

One, where the author is basically doing the equivalent of self-inserting into the story and saying 'this is how much this is'. These can be identified usually by information being given out for no particular reason other than to show how strong/fast a character is. Josuke saying Crazy Diamond punches at 300 km/h, Superman saying he's hitting someone hard enough to wreck a small planet, etc. is a good example of this. Josuke can also catch bullets and Superman has pushed the Earth before, so this is backed up and seems reasonable even though these weren't quantified in an actual feat they did.

Two, is similar to the above, but the character is also blatantly wrong and/or contradicted, either by the work itself or by another character or event. Very obvious exaggerations fall into this category too. Things like Hanayama from Baki hitting with the power of a black hole, or Burter saying he's the fastest in the universe.

Three is the major problem type. These are the very broad statements that usually appear in lore that often are either not directly reflected in the work and/or just not quantifiable. Usually done to express scope and some vague idea of power, but can't and really shouldn't be used for direct battleboarding, and are often combined with other statements to paint some ludicrous and nonexistent picture of a character's power. Pic related is a big example for Kratos. Kratos beat Sigrun, who has some kind of magic that will affect 'the realm' (a multiverse for GOWfags) but in a way that can't or shouldn't be measured, and all she does is fight you with her sword and some weak magic. Any kind of 'the demon king threatened an infinite number of dimensions with his power' variant is also an example of this.

For your example with Kirby, if an opponent is given universal/multiversal statements, then their feats need to be taken into account as well. From there it really just comes down to how much sufficient evidence is shown to justify the statement scaling, there should be a noticeable balance. Otherwise Kirby is shown to be obviously stronger than planet or star level but he’s stuck in a weird limbo relying on his opponent statement scaling for him to get higher without proof.

Though it pops up often, AW ironically works well to prove universal scaling (one of the very rare but notable statements in the game) through its feats. Chakravartin says he’ll destroy and remake the “world” (which in the context of what he does meaning the universe). He sits himself far away in space and appears to be sucking in the surrounding the galaxies. When he dies, galaxies comes out and the explosion results in the appearance of many more. In that case, we don’t see a universe being destroyed in one move, but it was in the process of being destroyed nonetheless, proving what Chakravartin said was correct. He can destroy the universe and that means he would remake it after as well. Asura has never directly destroyed a galaxy but given the context of what Chakravartin was doing and how Asura went on to beat a MUCH stronger form of the statue (as well as being able to break the statue beforehand) destroying the universe, then you can sufficiently put Asura at a lowball multi-galaxy to universal level (especially given he can grow much stronger than the final form of Chakravartin).
So really when you get higher with the use of statement scaling, context and feats become more important to prove those statements to a certain degree.

That’s why I said it’s really important to consider context when it comes statement scaling not only around the statement itself but the characters, setting and situation it refers to. Overall, statement scaling has its uses but more often than not it’s unreliable, especially at a higher degree.

For me, an acceptable amount would be something that you look at, compare it to the characters and their capabilities and think “yeah, this seems reasonable without breaking or contradicting anything”. I know we shit and meme on DB saying “just because x has never done y, doesn’t mean he can’t!”, but they’re correct to a certain extent, where context really determines that while they haven’t done this one thing their overall capabilities and feats of a similar caliber reflect that they can do it if put in the certain circumstance. That’s why basically everyone here clowns on multiversal Kratos, because his feats don’t back up any of his “multiversal” statements and no one makes fun of Asura for losing (or say he’s weak), aside from the obvious KINGtos shitposters, since he does shit that backs up his scaling. With Chakravartin, I wanted to make a point that statement scaling should work alongside feats instead of being the only thing solely carrying the scaling. Like shit, Chakravartin was chucking a shitload of planets, suns and stars at Asura. Hell he even threw in a blue supergiant and red star going supernova along with massive ass planet that dwarved galaxies. All of that and he just stated that was a mere trial, which makes sense since he himself was stronger than Destructor Asura in base and ridiculous stronger than Asura in Creator form.

I actually thought the animation for Kratos vs. Asura was good. I know a lot of people had problems with it, but I thought it was great.

Even if you disagree about Asura losing, given the power gap between the two it makes sense for Kratos to take little damage. It also put Kratos in some kind of a mentor or elder role to Asura, and let Kratos show how far he had come by defeating someone who had been down the same path as him. He wasn't just fighting Asura, he was TEACHING Asura. And I think that's very heartwarming in a way. That Kratos would take the lessons he learned and help someone who was just like him.

If this weren't a Death Battle I'm sure they would have ended cordially and taught each other well. The alternate ending is weird, even if heartwarming in its own way. It was nice to see Kratos reunite with his daughter, but it feels weird to have him just stand there and take that punch.

I haven't played Asura's game though (but after watching this fight I think I might watch a playthrough!) so I might be missing stuff but as a big GoW fan I thought they did Kratos justice and from what I saw they treated Asura with the utmost respect. What character has ever gotten an alternate ending made just for them?

I think it's just a classic case of one of two things:
- Murata has no idea what that feat implied, he just wanted to draw Saitama and Garou doing something giga cosmic if you combine and square their power, and then fell into the usual hole fictional characters do where they get impressed by random low level feats when they should be much higher.
- Murata drew the feat because he wanted Saitama vs Garou to wreck the whole universe but then opted to lower the bullshit levels in the fight because he's saving that level of escalation for when Saitama fights God or some other endgame threat.

Him destroying the stars despite a much closer Jupiter NOT being affected in the slightest makes no sense whatsoever. Neither does it work if you assume the way Earth illuminated is inconsistent and that the hole was in the opposite direction, because the opposite direction had the fucking Sun in it, and we also saw plenty of stars still being there when they had their return trip.
"They destroyed fuckhuge amount of stars" interpretation doesn't work no matter how you spin it. Because in one direction there's the Sun that didn't get atomized, and in the other there's Jupiter that didn't get atomized either.

Your diagram makes it even more problematic. The way the Earth and Moon are positioned in pages 1 and 4 makes it impossible for Sun and attack arrows to be pointing into different directions. I would have agreed with the inconsistency of where the Sun should be IF in the last page the Earth from Garou's perspective was completely shadowed, but even in that regard between the pages the illuminated part consistently doesn't make sense with how the Sun should be positioned.
The blue arrow pointing into Jupiter's direction on page 4 ALSO doesn't make sense because Garou and Saitama were launched AWAY from Jupiter right before that page.
The visual positioning of stellar bodies actually stays CONSISTENT between these shots, and you can't even argue that enough time passed for them to change because the fight was going at superspeed and barely any time should have passed.
The bigger "attack" beam also clearly went between the Moon and Earth in the opposite direction from where Saitama and Garou ended up (so your ATTACK arrow in page 4 makes zero sense as well), yet NOWHERE in that direction do we see the hole in the sky either.

Yes it does, the lighting is obviously different between them getting blown away and them coming back, you can notice this pretty easily with the moon since it has the giant hole in the back. Either the moon itself had been rotating a lot in a tiny amount of time or the light is inconsistent between the two scenarios which would take way too much time, making a comparison totally moot.

The Earth is illuminated the same way in pages 1 and 4. The spine in the back portion of the Moon is still in the middle of the shadowed portion too. The positioning of Earth, Moon and Sun in relation to each other didn't change at all.
And once again, the Jupiter arrow on last page makes zero sense considering it's Garou's perspective and he's literally flying away from Jupiter.
