You just described Sonic. Metal Virus is all his fault because he let Metal Sonic go after he tried to kill everyone. Metal goes right to Eggman and helps him immediately regain his memories. Then Sonic gets mad at Metal Sonic like it was some unforeseen betrayal. Shadow wanted to kill Eggman when he had amnesia but Sonic stopped him. They didn't even take him to jail or to the Restoration or any place near so they could keep an eye on him and swiftly respond at the first sign of trouble. They just left him in a remote village for him to get kidnapped. Surge wanted to kill Starline and Eggman and Sonic fought her because he didn't want her to kill them. He doesn't even try to form an alliance. He tells her no and then they fight. Sonic takes on the hilariously low stakes villain Clutch with the aid of Eggman of all people who then kidnaps Clutch and is now putting him to work. IDW is nothing but Sonic making things worse and escaping blame. Even worse is that anyone that gets on his case is then shit on by everyone.

Yeah, Sonic should've been punished too in one form or another for his idealistic naivety. I'm not excusing Sonic for anything. However, I can understand the hesitation due to sega being overly protective of how Sonic himself is portrayed. Lanolin on the other hand, not being a mainstay character, should have much more freedom, in terms of the writer coming up with an interesting scenario, where character development from drama could form and evolve, but the writers don't capitalise on it. A lot of readers are sick of Ian and Evan making excuses for their lackluster conclusions and bare boned story lines.

Lack of consequences, drama, interactions, it pales in comparison to the Archie run. IDW is frustratingly boring. Now you can say it's sega being cunts, or ideological limitations, but the writer's job is to find a way to write around these limitations to still manage to make an interesting enough story to attract readers and to maintain the current fan base. However, Ian and Evan don't seem to be capable of having the talent to do that.

There's no way Lanolin wasnt an Archie port with the way she's introduced and characterized before the mandates leashed her potential, not to mention ABT's illustrations. She would have been a new antihero post-Archie metal virus if that had happened.

I understand the Mimic confusion, but I still don't understand the purpose behind having her accidentally destroy a building when trying to apprehend a masked Sonic. They even showed her react like she knows she fucked up. But what was this supposed to tell us about her character?
The Mimic situation could be a matter of trust, needing to get to know her comrades better, learning everyone's expertise etc...
But destroying the building just made her seem extremely incompetent, in a way experience can't fix.

I want more Sonic stories that feel like the red shirt shaggy saga where they were more willing to stick with a really limited cast to try out new ideas.

Most of the cast does kind of force a story to feel a certain way, Knuckles, Shadow, even Eggman, so narrowing it down to just Sonic, Tails, and Amy (if you must you can include the remaining members of Team Rose if you want anyone else to show up) gives you a huge amount of narrative potential to just do what you want.

We got something of that with the storybook titles and possibly Blade of Courage as well.

As much as it was hated I loved the Red Shirt Shaggy era of Scooby Doo for how bizarre it was and I want to see something like that for Sonic.

Yes, her biggest issue is not having enough time showcasing her character and thought process. Most of her current panel time is really doubling as Tangle panel time and it shows. Just look at the Phantom Rider arc, we get ten trillion moments to look into Tangle's thoughts and we only really see Lanolin's at the very end. Which is why the ending doesn't have Tangle reflect at all either, the audience already knows her pov so her actions are understandable while Lanolin's don't appear that way.

I don't even know what else to say, that's basically it. If you're based, you'll get it instantly. The perfect combination between shounen and rubberhose cartoons, kind of like Kingdom Hearts. Episodic with monster-of-the-week battles that last around 4 issues (much like in Sonic Universe), and they have to be actual threats, not the gay octopus who has a knife he can't even use, Sonic needs to get all beat up and actually fear for his life. All while following a general arc with a final villain. That's it. They also go to actually interesting places and not "Random ass village in the middle of fucking nowhere (What do they eat?)"
