It's not literal, it's mainly a design convention. It's like how if you have a good dragon and evil dragon in a story, most of the time the good one will be designed completely different.

It has nothing to do with being โ€œsoftโ€ or whatever
Itโ€™s about reducing animation costs by making the same style so you can render with less effort and they can waste it on paying themselves
Every aspect you hate about animation is either executives forcing it in or because of cost. Beanmouth was decided as the style they can replicate easily

It's funny how everyone universally reviles this style and it's not making money, yet they still keep making it.
They lost their target audience of kids to shit like Skibidi and Smiling Critters and Poppy Playtime and for some reason still don't fathom the idea that the things kids are into these days are wannabe edgy, sharp softcore horror and not movies and cartoons about crying californians talking about their feelings and why they are special.

Acually it is because it's "cheap".
People often blame steven universe for it but forget that steven universe used to look a lot different and that the style change happened so that it would be simpler to animate with more vibrant colours and friendly rounder and simpler shapes and it just sorta caught on and became trendy I guess

Some youtuber pointed out that the majority of shit getting made these days are semi-autobiographical "muh childhood" stories; shit that is fictionalized, based on, or reflective of the creator's unresolved childhood bullshit, almost always with a quirk chungus MC who isn't understood by society, and so on. Comparatively, a lot of the biggest hits of the last few decades were either about parenthood, growing up, or taking responsibility.

In other words: New shit is navel gazing narcissism where the whole world needs to learn how great the protag is. Old shit was musing on maturity and responsibility and the protag has to learn about the world around them.

Teen Titans Go has no beanmouth.
>everyone went soft
That's very false. The execs just found a way to mass produced a cartoon through rig and beanmouth style. The very angular artstyle was also a trend because it was easier to animate on cel.

Also, what's with all the zoomers and their obsession with edgyness that apparently completely disappeared? (which is false. They just don't look for it.)

There is a psychology in humans to think
>round edge = soft or nice
>sharp edge = pointy and mean
So it translates to our design. idk if this is a conscious decision in any animation studio, but it is a big trend nowadays.
I miss the trend of sharp, or grimy worlds like Invader Zim. Even that got a bit rounded in comics. I wouldn't mind more variety.

You triggered my memories of that consultation company, Q5, ruining the Real Ghostbusters show. One of their "fixes" was making Janine's glasses round because "kids are afraid of sharp edges". The kicker was that they didn't even do any surveys or research.

Oh look at that, another know it all shit for brains. While yes, removing sharp edges does make a design softer its only more appealing for literal 2 year old toddlers. Sharp edges carry weight in character design to help express character personality, hence why more evil or mischievous characters have edges. These two for example.

It first started with taking small toys and parts off shelves because Little Timmy's parents couldn't be assed to make sure their kid wasn't trying to eat his toys or their parts.
Now they all just get phones and tablets welded to their hands and are told to consume a and hate b, repeat.

>help the industrialists/PMC psychos and get his legs and life back (being crippled sucks)
>fuck blue alien cat people and have some nerds think you're pretty cool and capable (also using the avatar to not be crippled)
He's bland because every character is bland, because James Cameron is a hack who lost his spark, but Jake Sully is not a self-insert for Cameron's unresolved childhood experiences, the way Elio is.
