I think he can be quite good, but he suffers from being the flagship character of DC and the face of their brand, which results in him being used much too often and as a result usually done poorly. Especially any story that makes him super duper special important *because* he is intrinsically Superman/some kind of cosmological constant, and not for anything he actually does or chooses, is insufferable.
