I do agree that I don't think their art style was the best choice but I don't think it had to be. Like we could have probably gotten something with the Alex Ross realistic aesthetic and that would have been cool.

Given he said Superman I would suggest Exile or the Triangle. The Busiek hardcover is also a cheap option. I would also look at some of the DC Finest volumes. That said I don't know him beyond the handful of characters he mentioned but this books will get you going on the actual run of comics. Honestly one thing that bothers me about recommendation stuff is when people just list the same collections of off canon books. They might be good in most cases but they're not really gonna get you running on the series proper. if you're dead set on an omnibus get one of the normal run numbered volumes. Fuck bendis.
