>You guys want to have a Superman thread?
Yeah.
> Favorite stories?
hard to pick just one. I've been rereading the whole Triangle era and that's been terrific. I remember getting into the book around Death and Return back in the day. The TAS comic is good too.
>Thoughts on the Williamson run going on right now?
Have not read.
>When might we finally get a proper Superman game?
I really don't get why people think this should be such a challenge. Him having a bunch of powers is the kind of stuff video games are all about. Just create a bunch of scenarios metroidvania style where you need to use different skills to get by. Oh here's a raging inferno I'll use my super breath. And as for super strength it's not like he fights regular hoods most of the time. Set up robots, alien warlords and tech baddies and you're good. You could even write some dumb plot where he needs to regain his powers because REASONS and then fight villains based on those powers. This shouldn't be hard.
> Thoughts on Supergirl?
She's alright

>Favorite stories?
Supreme by Alan Moore. Assuming that doesn't count, pic related is my favorite one-shot, and for longer storylines I loved the Gleason/Tomasi run with kid Jon. I also bought that new Superman Adventures Omnibus and have been enjoying it.
>Thoughts on the Williamson run going on right now?
I stopped keeping up with the weekly ongoing when Bendis got the book. Maybe I'll get back into it with the next big jumping-on point, but idk.
>When might we finally get a proper Superman game?
Didn't the Wonder Woman game just get cancelled? I don't think DC is willing to put out a non-AAA game, and that really means you need as wide of an appeal as humanly possible to justify the absurd investment. So, if the new movie sells gangbusters they might look into a Superman game that will come out in six years.
>Thoughts on Supergirl?
The character? I like several iterations of her, with the DCAU & New52 versions as personal favorites.
The ongoing series? Off to a good start; the author clearly cares about the character.

It’s fucking terrible. Hasn’t been a good run on either book since Tomasi was kicked off Superman in 2018. Action hasn’t been good since like 2009 lol

Who knows, but something like the Arkham games (even if I don't like them at all) could suit Supes pretty well. Remember the energy from those PS2 era Spiderman games? Mix that with Infamous/Prototype gameplay but with Superman powers, that's it. I don't know why people think that's hard, the word here is fun, Supermans has a great cast of villains and Metropolis can be anything you want from retrofuturistic to a colorful automated city like we see in the Megaman games.

> Thoughts on the Williamson run going on right now?
Better than Bendis. Not as good as the Tomasi/Jurgens runs during Rebirth. Didio (and Bendis)(then Taylor) really fucked up a good thing. It was time to tell the story of Lois & Clark and their child. Super Sons only just started in terms of long term potential.

It's just never been the same. In a vacuum, Williamson's run hasn't been bad; the characterizations and dialogue are decent.

But Jon is broken. There's nothing wrong with a queer representation in the Superman family, but everything about this execution is just so fucking cringe. Conner was right there.

And the book itself is bogged down in all the "fallout of status quo changes from last event and simultaneously setting up for the next status quo disrupting event" editorial that has destroyed Big 2 cape comics.

But I like Supercorp as an idea. I like Lois getting a run as Superwoman and having a full, real Super family.

I've actually loved World's Finest, and I also just started picking up Waid's new "Superboy of Smallville" on Action. Between AC, WF and JLU, I'm getting plenty of decent Superman action from Waid.

(I liked PKJ's Warworld arc)

I liked Grant's New 52 launch. Its its own standalone thing.

I also think Greg Pak's run on Action at the tail end of New 52 was really underrated. Its a good sequel to Grant's Superbro status. But unfortunately, the damage had already been done and the New 52 had tanked too many books. I think DCYou was a severely underrated initiative and its highs were really high

Sure, which is why I don't feel the same animosity that others do for Williamson and PKJ.

Its not like Bendis or Taylor where it reads very obviously that they're driven by their egos.
For the flaws that exist in Williamson and PKJ's writing, they're not writing from the same kind of pretentiousness.

In spite of everything, they're still trying to write Superman from a place of reverence. Also they're following marching orders from editorial which in itself is following marching orders from WB.

The Scott McCloud mini, strength, is underrated. Also love for all seasons and kyrptonite by sale and cooke.

I’ve personally hated the Williamson run. Not as much as the rest of the post tomasi era but pretty thoroughly dislike it. The “superstars” action stories were pretty shit as well.

Nothing since they abandoned Jon and the simple yet sorely needed concept of Superman having a young BIOLOGICAL son he could mentor and grow with has captured me.

The namek knock off by Johnson was particularly tiresome.

Not my intent but I can see how you could think that. Sorry. I just remember the anon from similar threads who basically shuts down anyone with anything nice to say about the current run because of the unfortunate status quo of Jon that remains ever since Bendis. I'm not happy about what happened to Jon either, believe me, but I'm not going to be a stick in the mud by turning a blind eye to everything coming out and disregard it as bad. I acknowledge things as they come.

I like it being based on Kryptonian. Family emblem is kind of lame. i would just make the whole thing part of Kryptonian alphabet. Its not literally an "s" but Lois seeing it and deciding it means Superman. Thats always been cool. And it gives Zod, Jax, Faora, and Preus something to work with when they have their own emblems.

But the Busiek hardcovers, the city of tomorrow compendium coming out, and Worlds at War getting and Omnibus (On top of the triangle era stuff) it's going to be a good year to be a Superman fan. I actually rearranged a lot of my purchases this year to now accommodate for these.

There are a lot of sun gods. You could do a whole thing with them. Make a whole sun pantheon. Maybe some want to inducts Supes in as a new one for a modern era. Others are not so keen on the idea, and Superman would of course turn it down but now he's got to deal with them being all pissed nobody believes in sun gods anymore. And others being more friendly.

Basically the idea was some modern day follower, last of the cult, resurrects the forgotten god trapped in a sarcophagus/item and of course the demigod with a chip on his shoulder wants to rebuild his name in the modern era. He keeps referring to Clark as a "deity" because naturally he recognizes Superman's power and how people love or "worship" him. Plus its fun to weaponize the sun, the very thing that charges Superman's cells, and make it volatile.
>>149132688
I chose a completely original/fictional one that was forgotten because it allows creative freedom and of course establishes a clear motive. The worst thing a god can experience is being lost to the ages.

Conner has been a heterosexual character for decades. Being a skirt chaser was big part of his 90's characterization and being in long-term relationships with women is big part of his angsty jock version, neither of which displayed any homosexual tendencies (fashion choices aside). Changing that is retarded, especially when it's solely to pander to a such a small demographic. It makes much more sense to have Jon the token faggot of the Superfamily as he's largely a blank slate.

They did a death and return game. It was a fine enough beat em up. Frankly though I think a lot of modern games in general have a real problem with needing everything to be contextualized in game. Like time was people just got it. You don't count the loses. If you get beat up it was simply because it was a video game. By all accounts Spider-man shouldn't have any trouble with most goons either but nobody complains when he gets pummeled in a video game. And yes I get he's not as strong as superman but it wouldn't make sense for him to get hit at all in the first place. More over the idea that superman has to fight the same weak level enemies. mechs and monsters. most of his rogues can find ways to give him a rough time. This shouldn't be hard but people want to be needlessly pedantic.

one thing that could give superman an interesting plot is him having a split personality disorder.
clark doesn't know he is superman and everytime he changes into superman he essentially transform into a more classical version of supes, kinda like a dad shape.
clark would be younger looking and nerdy, even slim but when he goes superman he becomes a literal unit.

A lot of video game design is centered around not being able to fly, which is why its usually limited, a power-up, and/or limited to gliding.

> You could even write some dumb plot where he needs to regain his powers because REASONS and then fight villains based on those powers.
Yeah, but that's contrived. It already is when they try to do so for actual video game characters. Mind you, I want a Superman video game more than you probably do.

That's one of the things that would make the game unique though. In fact the more I start to think about it the more I start to realize that there is a pretty solid frame work for a super man game that uses flight as a central mechanic already. You ever play Zone of thee Enders? Robot game. All of it in zero g. You use Triangle and X to control your vertical axis, can dash and boost around, swap between various powers and abilities and is rad as hell.

>Yeah, but that's contrived
I don't disagree but I'm just speaking from the perspective of some dullard designer.

Believe it or not flight is harder than you'd think in games. Not only a sense of satisfying control, but being able to speed up, stop, and turn on a dime matters. That Y axis eats up game memory like you wouldn't believe

We really don't talk about how shit Kryptonians were enough. Zod waws everything they were, while Clark, Jor-El, and Kara were everything they failed to be
>Tried to conquer the universe thanks to their broken tech
>Thankfully surrounding systems were bathed in red sunlight
>Got pushed back to Krypton by naturally pissed off other species
>Imposed a "self-exile" of salt where they had a golden age of ego fart sniffing and xenophobia
>Hubris finally catches up with them, and Krypton goes supernova
>Guardians of The Universe/Green Lantern Corp say "Thank fuck" and tell Tomar-Re not to warn nor interfere.
There's a reason why Kandor was never restored to full size again. Clark knew his people couldn't adapt, to change. So they remain preserved rather than extinct

I don't know what side of the trunks argument you stand on, personally I'm pro, but Action really does show how simple it is to make the costume work without them just by having the belt be yellow. And honestly I'd be mostly okay with that if they didn't always try to make everything all sci fi and tactical looking.

I feel like one of the biggest problems with a video game is needing to tie everything into the whole open world shtick that's become the norm. And while being able to fly around Metropolis would be pretty sick I do feel like the game would be pretty limited if we did try to keep everything to just the one city. I want to head out into space and do stuff there too. Maybe even bring Mongul and War World into it.

You guys remember that one Tales From The Dark Multiverse story that was a What If of Death of Superman where Lois became Eradicator? I legitimately think that troubled variant of Lane could make for a great reoccurring villain for Clark. She could travel the multiverse “saving” Supermen like how Eradicator absorbed Kryptonians into his cyber/genetic body, and Earth Prime Clark is her next target. Kent obviously doesn’t want to hurt a Lois variant, and Eradicator Lois being a mentally unstable grieving mess makes her a danger

Heroes was decent. It was more like Champions of Norrath than Ultimate Alliance though. One of the big issues was that you didn't really have the freedom to pick your heroes as you wanted but it was a solid enough game. Though MUA does bring up an interesting comparison because nobody ever seems to complain that Thor or Hulk can get taken down by thugs.

It was more a teaser than an overt cliffhanger. So all the major plots were resolved but they did set up a new villain looming menacingly. I'd have liked a season 3. A lot of legion stuff still wasn't covered. I'd have like to seen Wildfire.

Is Superman & Lois worth it? I watched the first episode but wasn't really vibing with the kids and I'm sure they're a big part of it. It's not that I dislike kids but the one with Asperger's or whatever seemed super melodramatic and unlikable and I prefer Superman stories being more fun. I read the Tomasi run and really liked it and it made sense that the kid is super hyped up that his dad is Superman but in the show he's just a moody autist about it.

Does it get any better if these are my issues with it or is it just not for me?

Discourse around this character is really retarded particularly in regards to his live-action portrayal. I realized that comic book readers haven’t quite received the same autism treatment that manga readers have. Their words shouldn’t really mean anything and at least manga readers will gladly shit on their own products. Finding genuine Superman discussion is really hard to find today. Reddit has gone off the rails. Any criticism for the new movie is labeled as Snyder faggotry despite it obviously doesn’t look anything special.

I'm a fan of Parasite. He looks weird as hell, which is cool, and his powers have tons of opportunity. I like how he's kind of pathetic, he needs other people's strength to do anything. It's interesting to me also when he takes on traits of people he can absorb, there's a lot to explore there.

that just makes me think of that Gargoyles episode where Tim Curry is trying to clone gargoyles using cat and bat DNA
he gets things that obviously need a LOT of energy to flap those bat wings. completely missing that gargoyles glide
he surmises that gargoyles need a stupidly high amount of energy, which he measures in cows for some reason instead of fat and carbohydrate
then surmises they absorb sunlight all day. yeah, because there's SO MUCH energy you can draw from the sun hitting a few square meters of space even with a fully efficient solar panel..
nevermind they DON'T NEED TO FLAP
and then greg weisman later says yeah that's canon. really? the thing you had your clueless scientist guess is canon? that explains a lot of your beliefs.

oh and the way the GMO gargoyles solved this was splicing in electric eel DNA. because the ability to convert all your nerve impulses into a shock means infinite fuel, right?

STAS version of Brainiac was kind of excellent, and so was Metallo. but really the best was Darkseid. Darkseid made Luthor look like a lazy chump. Luthor wants to prove Superman can't possibly be as good as he seems, Darkseid is like "he is obviously that good, I want to show everyone that doing that gets you killed."

For as much as people want to point to Death as some stunt event (which is honestly more than a bit fair) they never really spend time with with the follow up which is really what made that event actually worth while. They actually explored the effects his death had on the world and the people around him. The issue with Pa Kent having the heart attack and vision was fantastic. More to pint, it's one of the best examples of how to get a bunch of new legacies over fast.

Honestly it took me longer than I'd like to admit they were even different guys. It's probably just a matter of circumstance. Newburn simply just didn't get to play Clark as much as he did Superman. Justice League tended to be more work focused for the heroes. They do have a very similar cadence though once you notice the difference it's easy to tell.

I do. It does not necessarily has to be the sky. A body of water, a flame, a tree, some item on the desk or even an empty wall will do (provided we aren't talking about anything specific right in fron of us). Never got that idea of why should i look at the face of the one i talk to, i just end up focusing on his eye's pupil or one of the colored stripes around it - and then you start complaining that i "stare".

I thought it was a great character piece, really drove home how much the his dad loved Clark and how much Clark loved the world because of it.
I really liked All Star Superman as well.
As I've gotten older I've really started to just appreciate the hell out of sincerity in stories and it seems like the ones that get recommended a lot have that in spades. He's rapidly becoming a top 3 character for me next to Captain America and my boy Gambit

Waid’s writing has degenerated and nowhere as coherent or even worthwhile as it was even in its slopes 20 years ago. To his credit, he claimed that there would be a general decrease of quality in his work since he no longer believes America has the “common good” he needs to believe in to write superheroes, even though this is just some retarded liberal cope prevaricating over that he just doesn’t have it anymore (and he’s “washed” as the kids say).

Waid was always high strung, but Trump broke that man. I remember the first of that teen Marvel heroes comic he was writing with young Cyclops and Ms. Marvel had racist sheriffs in a small southern town burn down a black church, a Jewish synagogue, and a Muslim temple… all somehow in the same small town. Because Waid has clearly never ventured outside of a city. Also:
> “Waid repeatedly banging a telephone receiver on the ground over and over again and weeping … his habit of getting into violent arguments over the phone before crying in the middle of the office were so common other Marvel staff learnt to ignore it.”

>Favorite stories?
All Star Superman, Birthright, Emperor Joker leap to mind

>Thoughts on the Williamson run going on right now?
It's got a lot of fun ideas but barely uses them. Marilyn Moonlight gets a story once every eight issues, Lena returns only to become a background character and ultimately leave the book to go be in Supergirl. Jimmy and Silver Banshee are dating but we almost never see them. We've got a new chief of police but he does nothing. Liveware was working for the Daily Planet for like, one issue? and then forgotten. The book has a cast from the triangle era but without the benefit of four issues a month.

I'm honestly dropping the title with the Legion of Darkseid story, I don't give a fuck about the evil Darkseid Universe.

>When might we finally get a proper Superman game?
Never.

>Thoughts on Supergirl?
The character never really interested me, but Sophie Campbell's run is leaning really heavy into a bunch of Silver Age concepts which has my curiosity.

I'll grant you that there's a certain function to that, but that's why Batman is good at leading teams, you don't.. you don't have to keep extending everything so far.. all these replacements, so many robins.. Damien is a terrible character, the mute batgirl is a terrible character.
Green Arrow has a team? What are they called, the Arrowists? y'know because they're terrorists..

I think that's sort of it though. Steel was never intended to be. At least not so overtly. He was just some dude who looked up to Superman and used his own skills to try and follow that legacy. He was part of the story and the reason he caught on was because he was allowed to be himself rather than forced to be the next thing. And it worked. People like Steel. I like Steel. He fits into the mythos smoothly and has become so regular I can scarcely imagine him not being there.

in fairness he has the size.
buty he's got such a hip-heavy build that they really needed to bulk out the pauldrons a little.. and the face was _never_ going to work without extensive CGI they weren't really ready for. nor does it make sense in-universe. Chrome metal just doesn't flex. he needs a solid faceplate and then to take his helmet off when you want to see him express.

Our Worlds at War came out a time when I was really in the mood for a big, warlike epic, so I look back on it fondly. The fights actually felt like they had consequences, and a few supporting characters get killed off and stay killed off (until the Nu52 reboot, at least). It was gave us what I believe was the first time Superman flew into the sun to go full DBZ. I remember reading this panel in particular and just blinking quietly for a few seconds at the implication of it.

He technically is a legacy. John's entire hero career was inspired by Superman, and he donned the armor because at the time The Man of Steel was thought to be dead and gone. In fact that's what makes John so cool. He's not Kryptonian, he doesn't even have powers, yet he chose to fill incredibly big shoes when Metropolis needed a hero by using what he knew.

Also love the fact that Irons has a company that is responsible for rebuilding the city every time there's collateral damage.

Probably because if it does well it will give Gunn almost complete creative control of all DC media outside of comics. His brand of humor and his vision may very well work for Superman, or it might not, but I absolutely do not want him anywhere near characters like Wonder Woman or Batman....especially since he's expressed his intention at skipping straight to Damian (worst Robin) and he wants to use the hapa gimp suit Batgirl the yellowfeverfags on here are obsessed with. If it was standalone film that wasn't intended to serve as launching point for a new DC cinematic universe less people would be hoping for it fails.

He'd have to deal with gay guys hitting on him after he saves them trying to act all straight and butch dressed in pajamas and red underwear.

But you know they'd be all like, "Thank you superman!" And he'd be all like, "Don't mention it citizen! Happy Pride month!"

Be funnier if it said, "You saved me superman!"

Luthor's whole thing about Superman holding back humanity is a smokescreen for the real reason he hates Superman. Superman stops him from getting away with crimes. All that shit about advancing humanity never mattered to him. Before Superman showed up he was doing all the standard shady rich people shit. It's only when Superman showed up did he start doing the SciFi stuff.

He doesn't go to work at buzzfeed sharing an open office with 15 tumblerinas or go to bloomburg screaming about how hard they are for Israel and how their think tank is going to push for news articles on Iran to sell his editors lockheed stock.

Superman is completely divorced from the real world. He lives in a sterilized little bubble so people can feel bad about themselves for not being 'normal' cause their gated community has bums sleeping outside it.

The city on which his paradise is modeled is a complete dystopia.

Superman is the most sexually sterilized comic I've ever seen. He is basically a cuckold, he pines endlessly for lois while she fucks around on him and basically enjoys teasing him, but there is no mention of sex or sexuality in any form whatsoever. The guy is literally dressed in his pjs like a toddler.

I mean, for fucks sake, we all got here the same way, we didn't come from storks. Its like those old sitcoms where you'd see husband and wife sleeping in seperate beds cause the censors where puritanical nutjobs.

Not expecting much. Nothing I've seen looks visually appealing or really promising; it looks more like an an advertisement for the DCU than a bona fide Superman movie. I understand skipping the origin story, but there's something to be said about dropping casual audiences into a world that already has Super-robots, a Fortress of Solitude, Krypto, a Justice team, parallel worlds, supervillains and possibly clones. They might pull it off, idk.

There was an artistry that's lacking today. Stories had to be compelling because they needed to SELL. Think about it, you had a new issue of Superman every week. The creatives had to consistently put out top work and couldn't subsist on half a book about characters eating and the other half trying to do some bumbling allegory about how bad Republicans are.
