> Favorite stories? hard to pick just one. I've been rereading the whole Triangle era and that's been terrific. I remember getting into the book around Death and Return back in the day. The TAS comic is good too.
>Thoughts on the Williamson run going on right now?Have not read.
>When might we finally get a proper Superman game? I really don't get why people think this should be such a challenge. Him having a bunch of powers is the kind of stuff video games are all about. Just create a bunch of scenarios metroidvania style where you need to use different skills to get by. Oh here's a raging inferno I'll use my super breath. And as for super strength it's not like he fights regular hoods most of the time. Set up robots, alien warlords and tech baddies and you're good. You could even write some dumb plot where he needs to regain his powers because REASONS and then fight villains based on those powers. This shouldn't be hard.

>>149129147 (OP)>Favorite stories?Supreme by Alan Moore. Assuming that doesn't count, pic related is my favorite one-shot, and for longer storylines I loved the Gleason/Tomasi run with kid Jon. I also bought that new Superman Adventures Omnibus and have been enjoying it.
>Thoughts on the Williamson run going on right now?I stopped keeping up with the weekly ongoing when Bendis got the book. Maybe I'll get back into it with the next big jumping-on point, but idk.
>When might we finally get a proper Superman game?Didn't the Wonder Woman game just get cancelled? I don't think DC is willing to put out a non-AAA game, and that really means you need as wide of an appeal as humanly possible to justify the absurd investment. So, if the new movie sells gangbusters they might look into a Superman game that will come out in six years.

The ongoing series? Off to a good start; the author clearly cares about the character.

I think the best version of Supergirl was the former Luthor henchwoman who was actually some kind of transforming blob. Personally as well, I loved when Superman had his own Super-Family going on. Superboy (Kon-El), Steel, Supergirl, and Guardian. But that only worked when Superman was at half-strength.

Remember the energy from those PS2 era Spiderman games? Mix that with Infamous/Prototype gameplay but with Superman powers, that's it. I don't know why people think that's hard, the word here is fun, Supermans has a great cast of villains and Metropolis can be anything you want from retrofuturistic to a colorful automated city like we see in the Megaman games.

Better than Bendis. Not as good as the Tomasi/Jurgens runs during Rebirth. Didio (and Bendis)(then Taylor) really fucked up a good thing. It was time to tell the story of Lois & Clark and their child. Super Sons only just started in terms of long term potential.
It's just never been the same. In a vacuum, Williamson's run hasn't been bad; the characterizations and dialogue are decent.
But Jon is broken. There's nothing wrong with a queer representation in the Superman family, but everything about this execution is just so fucking cringe. Conner was right there.
And the book itself is bogged down in all the "fallout of status quo changes from last event and simultaneously setting up for the next status quo disrupting event" editorial that has destroyed Big 2 cape comics.
But I like Supercorp as an idea. I like Lois getting a run as Superwoman and having a full, real Super family.
I've actually loved World's Finest, and I also just started picking up Waid's new "Superboy of Smallville" on Action. Between AC, WF and JLU, I'm getting plenty of decent Superman action from Waid.
(I liked PKJ's Warworld arc)

I also think Greg Pak's run on Action at the tail end of New 52 was really underrated. Its a good sequel to Grant's Superbro status. But unfortunately, the damage had already been done and the New 52 had tanked too many books. I think DCYou was a severely underrated initiative and its highs were really high
>>149131562I don’t think it’s a good Superman comic. It would work better as an OC, at best an out of continuity mini.

I don't get the hang up on some of this continuity. Its like Alan Moore: "they're all imaginary stories"
>>149131704While I do agree there's a limit to how serious you should take many of these things I also want to say that being equally and inversely disrespectful to them is as bad. People have expectations and your pretty little writer ego doesn't give you carte blanche.
>>149129942Williamson has a decent Superman book happening right now. Has STAS vibes I think
>>149131737Sure, which is why I don't feel the same animosity that others do for Williamson and PKJ.
Its not like Bendis or Taylor where it reads very obviously that they're driven by their egos.
For the flaws that exist in Williamson and PKJ's writing, they're not writing from the same kind of pretentiousness.
In spite of everything, they're still trying to write Superman from a place of reverence. Also they're following marching orders from editorial which in itself is following marching orders from WB.
>>149130063>Pulled his same “the villain is actually a good guy”How is this out of the norm for the occasional Lex story? His motives swing back and forth. Hell, people loved SuperLex back in Rebirth

How was the PKJ stuff anyways? I hear good things about War World.

I’ve personally hated the Williamson run. Not as much as the rest of the post tomasi era but pretty thoroughly dislike it. The “superstars” action stories were pretty shit as well.
Nothing since they abandoned Jon and the simple yet sorely needed concept of Superman having a young BIOLOGICAL son he could mentor and grow with has captured me.
The namek knock off by Johnson was particularly tiresome.
>>149132119I was sort of eyeing the compendium version but was really on the fence. I guess I'll just pass. I'm really only interested in prenu52 stuff anyways
>>149132104That's a matter of opinion, and I'm sorry anon but your attitude comes off really disingenuous. There's nothing offensive or particularly bad with the current run
>>149131153>217-218i fucked up. But the comics I'm thinking of I can remember the plot.
>Luthor tells Superman to fuck off because everytime he performs a heroic deed he's literally destroying the city>Superman chooses to let Lex incarcerate him because he can't refute the claims and it seems Lex wanted to help the city>turns out the thing that was destroying the city was a creation of Lex's that spirals out of Lex's control>Lex begrudgingly works together with Superman to defeat it and Suerman still takes Lex to prisonI hate that I cannot remember the exact iss number. But I love that story.
>>149132204They have new Superman adventures compendium coming out, basically the TAS Superman. I’d highly recommend that instead. Johnson’s run was pretty dogshit all in all. Not entirely his fault given the status quo he was handed but doesn’t change the result.

I'm not happy about what happened to Jon either, believe me, but I'm not going to be a stick in the mud by turning a blind eye to everything coming out and disregard it as bad. I acknowledge things as they come.
>>149132327>>149132345Why can't I compare the two? Pretty episodic, easily digestible arcs, pretty uplifting vibes, heck even did cool stuff with Livewire and Parasite. Also don't really know what She-Hulk has to do with this conversation.

>>149132525There are a lot of sun gods. You could do a whole thing with them. Make a whole sun pantheon. Maybe some want to inducts Supes in as a new one for a modern era. Others are not so keen on the idea, and Superman would of course turn it down but now he's got to deal with them being all pissed nobody believes in sun gods anymore. And others being more friendly.
>>149132541>>149132650Basically the idea was some modern day follower, last of the cult, resurrects the forgotten god trapped in a sarcophagus/item and of course the demigod with a chip on his shoulder wants to rebuild his name in the modern era. He keeps referring to Clark as a "deity" because naturally he recognizes Superman's power and how people love or "worship" him. Plus its fun to weaponize the sun, the very thing that charges Superman's cells, and make it volatile.
>>149132688I chose a completely original/fictional one that was forgotten because it allows creative freedom and of course establishes a clear motive. The worst thing a god can experience is being lost to the ages.

Conner was right there>>149132979>Kon being gay with Tim while Jon and Damian were straight bros crushing on girls and being awesome would have both flown off shelves like free green cards at the border.Conner has been a heterosexual character for decades. Being a skirt chaser was big part of his 90's characterization and being in long-term relationships with women is big part of his angsty jock version, neither of which displayed any homosexual tendencies (fashion choices aside). Changing that is retarded, especially when it's solely to pander to a such a small demographic. It makes much more sense to have Jon the token faggot of the Superfamily as he's largely a blank slate.
>>149132340Personally, I think having it be the symbol of El kinda takes away from Superman. At that point it stops being his symbol and he becomes just another Kryptonian. And I think having it just be an "S" would make him closer to Earth and its people.

Frankly though I think a lot of modern games in general have a real problem with needing everything to be contextualized in game. Like time was people just got it. You don't count the loses. If you get beat up it was simply because it was a video game. By all accounts Spider-man shouldn't have any trouble with most goons either but nobody complains when he gets pummeled in a video game. And yes I get he's not as strong as superman but it wouldn't make sense for him to get hit at all in the first place. I feel like one of the biggest problems with a video game is needing to tie everything into the whole open world shtick that's become the norm. And while being able to fly around Metropolis would be pretty sick I do feel like the game would be pretty limited if we did try to keep everything to just the one city. I want to head out into space and do stuff there too. Maybe even bring Mongul and War World into it.

You guys remember that one Tales From The Dark Multiverse story that was a What If of Death of Superman where Lois became Eradicator? I legitimately think that troubled variant of Lane could make for a great reoccurring villain for Clark. She could travel the multiverse “saving” Supermen like how Eradicator absorbed Kryptonians into his cyber/genetic body, and Earth Prime Clark is her next target. Kent obviously doesn’t want to hurt a Lois variant, and Eradicator Lois being a mentally unstable grieving mess makes her a danger

I think the issue with Absolute Superman is that due to this Kal-el being a wandering his book is essentially a vehicle to flesh out the larger Absolute Universe. With Peacemakers and Ras, the reader is left yearning for actual Superman material to be explored
>>149161177Heroes was decent. It was more like Champions of Norrath than Ultimate Alliance though. I remember the first of that teen Marvel heroes comic he was writing with young Cyclops and Ms. Marvel had racist sheriffs in a small southern town burn down a black church, a Jewish synagogue, and a Muslim temple… all somehow in the same small town. Because Waid has clearly never ventured outside of a city. Also:
> “Waid repeatedly banging a telephone receiver on the ground over and over again and weeping … his habit of getting into violent arguments over the phone before crying in the middle of the office were so common other Marvel staff learnt to ignore it.”

>Favorite stories?
All Star Superman, Birthright, Emperor Joker leap to mind
>Thoughts on the Williamson run going on right now?
It's got a lot of fun ideas but barely uses them. Marilyn Moonlight gets a story once every eight issues, Lena returns only to become a background character and ultimately leave the book to go be in Supergirl. Jimmy and Silver Banshee are dating but we almost never see them. We've got a new chief of police but he does nothing. Liveware was working for the Daily Planet for like, one issue? and then forgotten. The book has a cast from the triangle era but without the benefit of four issues a month.
I'm honestly dropping the title with the Legion of Darkseid story, I don't give a fuck about the evil Darkseid Universe.
>When might we finally get a proper Superman game?
Never.
>Thoughts on Supergirl?
The character never really interested me, but Sophie Campbell's run is leaning really heavy into a bunch of Silver Age concepts which has my curiosity.
Roxy would work better as a Superman antagonist

he's bootleg war machine. don't forget it.
>>149195220>Even if you like Steel he isn't a key character at all.I think that's sort of it though. Steel was never intended to be. At least not so overtly. He was just some dude who looked up to Superman and used his own skills to try and follow that legacy. He was part of the story and the reason he caught on was because he was allowed to be himself rather than forced to be the next thing. And it worked. People like Steel. I like Steel. He fits into the mythos smoothly and has become so regular I can scarcely imagine him not being there.

buty he's got such a hip-heavy build that they really needed to bulk out the pauldrons a little.. and the face was _never_ going to work without extensive CGI they weren't really ready for. nor does it make sense in-universe. Chrome metal just doesn't flex. he needs a solid faceplate and then to take his helmet off when you want to see him express.
>>149195965it needs the cape
>>149196053also this. DCAU pulled it off okay, it helped that it started with that police exosuit and it had more to break up the body so it wasn't one solid color (though in the process, it made him look like his name should be Lead or Iron)
but cape is still better...
>>149158768Our Worlds at War came out a time when I was really in the mood for a big, warlike epic, so I look back on it fondly. The fights actually felt like they had consequences, and a few supporting characters get killed off and stay killed off (until the Nu52 reboot, at least). It was gave us what I believe was the first time Superman flew into the sun to go full DBZ. I remember reading this panel in particular and just blinking quietly for a few seconds at the implication of it.

>>149196614>>149196542Well that's another plus. He's part legacy part original.
>>149196614>>149196946He technically is a legacy. John's entire hero career was inspired by Superman, and he donned the armor because at the time The Man of Steel was thought to be dead and gone. In fact that's what makes John so cool. He's not Kryptonian, he doesn't even have powers, yet he chose to fill incredibly big shoes when Metropolis needed a hero by using what he knew.
Also love the fact that Irons has a company that is responsible for rebuilding the city every time there's collateral damage.

Superman is completely divorced from the real world. He lives in a sterilized little bubble so people can feel bad about themselves for not being 'normal' cause their gated community has bums sleeping outside it.
The city on which his paradise is modeled is a complete dystopia.
