CEOs are greedy fucktards, because they would be considered 'bad' ones if they decreased company profit margins in any way from their record-breaking pace and paid their workers high wages and pensions. The employees would be happy. The shareholders would not be.

Alternatively, he could've been like the leaders of today who just accomplish nothing and fade away because the use of force and deadly confrontation is verboten. It's not easy.

The Diamonds are murderous evil tyrants, but their jobs either necessitate this controlling behavior on some level, or their problem solving abilities have been stretched to the limit of what they can accomplish through diplomacy alone.
