Comic book critics ironically are much like the very comics they criticize.

That is, they go nowhere, instead choosing to regurgitate the same old status quo day in day out.
They offer no critique that is actually meaningful, because this would cause actual change in the industry, or atleast the culture of critique.
And on occasion they celebrate that which is not worthy of celebration. Just as the hero in a comic book will time and time again trust in the sudden reformation of a villain who will obviously return to crime, comic book critics trust in the continous and never geninune reformations of the comic book industry.

They're not actually interested in delivering any worthwhile criticisms. If they did, they would run out of things to critique very quickly. They avoid tackling the real meat and potatoes of the issues in the comic book industry and instead post daily or weekly rants about either the same old tired issues, or issues that are completely irrelevant.

But the biggest sin, is that they don't actually do anything constructive. All they do is whine, and whine lazilly at that.
If I cared about comics half as much as they do, I wouldn't make a youtube channel bitching about it, I'd network with creators, make my own comics company, and put my critiques into action.
I wouldn't want to make 1000 videos, I'd want at most to make 10 videos that completely and totally shut up the industry for good.

Noah Berlatsky was a guy who used to write for Comics Journal and then spun off to his own site, Hooded Utilitarian. He's known for writing contrarian hot takes, and proceeded to continue doing this when getting jobs at other places like NBC or Playboy or whatever. He came under fire years ago when he put "Prostasia communications director" on his Twitter bio and people found out months later.

It's arguable that of the three, he's the "best" writer (because he actually gets a lot of jobs in the mainstream), but also the most insufferable of them

It's mostly because his own works commit a lot of the same exact issues that he rails against as a comic book critic, such as bad artwork, overwrought narration, the slight trivialization of sex crimes, clumsy moralization, ripping off The Watchmen without properly understanding its themes, gaudy self-inserts, and a whole bunch of stuff that would make the webcomic just another mediocre failed webcomic were it not coming from the hands/mind of a self-proclaimed comic book fan that should supposedly know better than to fall into those pit traps.

While personally, I think he's a bad critic for other reasons, I can see why he gets more shit over this than say Roger Ebert's failed attempt at a movie. Namely, that everyone hopes someone who can critique a subject has absorbed enough knowledge on how to perform that subject at a decent level, and being capable of self-reflection. And while Roger Ebert's acknowledged he's not good enough to write movies and just give his opinions of them, Linkara generally refuses to talk about his work beyond excusing them as the product of a younger Linkara. So imo, he's invalid as a critic AND a writer, and while they aren't directly linked, his problem isn't that he thinks too much like a critic, it's that he thinks too much like Lewis Lovehaug.

People certainly appreciate getting advice on things. But if you read a bad book or see a bad film what really is the harm? Not to derail the thread but Cartoonist Kayfabe was the best because they went over the process of making comics so you actually learned something, everyone else comes at reviews from a fanboy perspective so it's mostly crying my favorite hero didn't look strong enough in this scene, instead of the techniques that made a scene work, their cattyness to other creators was annoying but the meat of the content and attention to detail was good.
I'm liking Strange Brain Parts, it's more video essays than reviews, but he covers indie and older comics in pretty chill and quick format.

These are probably the big ones for me. Duncan the Wonder Dog might be one of the worst comics I've ever read. I wonder what compels us this way. Is it just human nature? But all the same I do still think this is equally as much as people who try to make outrage their careers. Fault certainly falls on the people who support it to a not insignificant degree but they are farming it all the same. Even leaving aside Linkara it felt like during the 2010s there were a lot more smug, snarky douchebags reviewing comics. The annoying Youtubers yelling Comics Are Dead are basically less pretentious versions of them, born from the environment fostered by the 2010s comics critics and journalists
