Each Rick in order to differentiate themselves is all equally smart but some lack critical awareness to help make proper use of their intelligence which is why some Rick straight up are service workers and are accepting of the caste system despite one Rick could easily ruin it for everyone involved thats why S1 Rick was referred to as "The Rogue" since he single handedly dismantled the Galactic Federation and the Council of Ricks.

S1 worked because it was Roiland filtered through Harmon. His desire to make everything shocking and twisted was grounded by/plastered onto Harmon's usual formula of poking fun at sitcoms while simultaneously playing them straight, resulting in S1 being a straightforward "what if crotchety drunken grandpa who's lived a long life wants to reconnect with the family he's left behind, but he's a superscientist" kind of concept.

The problem was, Roiland hates working with anyone else and having his work altered, so in S2, Harmon was already pushing more of the sappy and "deconstructionist" shit, and by S3, him and the others he pulled over from Community had basically just turned Rick and Morty into the nihilistic sci-fi equivalent of Community. It's all the same "we'll lampshade it but do it anyways" humor, lecturing the camera, and Rick's treated basically just becomes old superscience Jeff Winger.

It's also why the writers do those "what the fuck do you mean by doing the old adventures" moments in the show, because Harmon viewed this as what his contributions and the show as a whole always were, so he doesn't understand the idea that there's even been a change. It's what he was always pushing for.

I feel like it's been obvious since Season 4 that Rick and Morty is written for the masses and not the loser superfans who obsess over every little piece of "lore." As long as it can entertain the average joe who tunes in to an episode at random, then the writers have succeeded. They'll throw in the occasional treat for longtime viewers like the odd reference to a past episode or a passing 'parmesan' mention, but that's never their main focus. Neither Harmon nor Roiland have ever implied otherwise, and many here on /co/ need to remember that.

It was post-season 3 when they stated that his crowning achievement was simply cordoning off the Rick-centric universes from the ones where anyone else is on his level, and they've kept with it. Does anyone else think it rings really hollow when the show or a writer in interviews tries to refute Rick's attitude that nothing matters because there is an endless multiverse? Because no matter how they try to "say" otherwise, the actions of the characters in the show itself indicates otherwise.

You know the version of Jerry who learned being a celebrity wasn't necessarily a better path than what he took, learned his son was more important than admiration of ignorant Plutonians, bonded with Doofus Rick and helped save a deer? That one unceremoniously replaced the one who bonded with Beth after the Meeseekses, went through the simulation and learned to accept his parents new life style, after that one got trapped in a cronenberged reality. In turn, he got unceremoniously replaced at the daycare and it was unknown if it even happened for a long time, then got definitively written out and forgotten himself after some nightmare fuel happened to him. And this is far from the only one character this happens to, you know Birdperson? Yeah, real noble of Rick to save that one version of him who got brainwashed and cyborg instead of just grabbing a new version of him because "that's not how that works", the problem? That's not the Birdperson he was friends with back in the day and it's not the current version of Birdperson either. The current version is, at least third one he's interacted with and he just treats it like he's only ever interacted with one.

Why should I care to take anything about the claims that Rick is wrong about nothing mattering because of the multiverse, when the vast majority of what is shown indicates that he's right anyway? If he was wrong, then people and thing wouldn't be considered interchangeable with their alternate counterparts but no matter how much they try to pay lip service to the idea that they aren't, it's hard to take seriously when it's actually shown to be the case that they are interchangeable over and over and over again...

It's stuff like the history of Jerrys being replaced that keep me interested in the show. It works on a dark shock value level in the way that not even characters you think are going to stick around could always just up and die out of nowhere and it makes re-watching those old episodes more fun. Also, even though I haven't seen the episode yet, the upcoming Morty Jr. episode promo implies that our current post-Jerryboree Jerry experienced the same events as the ones he replaced.

There were plenty of episodes when they were as lost as the viewer and had to problem solve, like how they figure out how to identify the memory parasites in Total Rickall. It was more fun then. As I have stated numerous times, this show is dead, the magic is gone, the high concepts are not there, the concepts are no longer smart or memorable, and I find myself ultimately mostly disappointed that I looked forward to it at all.

HOWEVER, if the show has even the slightest fleck of fetish fuel or goon material, it will remain a good show.

And the show did have the big head cogs and Summer with a new swimsuit that didn't quite fit her ass.

I think if AS could do it all over again, they wouldn't have greenlit it through S10, maybe through to S5 or 6 at most. Even without having to replace Roiland, the returns have been diminishing season by season if you look at ratings, and even if I take as granted that ratings on cable now matter less than how many people a show can draw to your streaming service, I don't think 5 extra seasons of R&M that suck more and more do that much for you. And while I'm sure they've made and continue to make a killing licensing the IP out for merch, they'd do that just as well without having to keep the corpse of this show going long after it's expiration date when those resources could just as easily go to making their next big hit, which Smiling Friends is the closest they've gotten to making so far.

second episode this season with a b-plot. good instinct by the writers because this a-plot felt like a whole lotta nuthin. trashworld could've been more interesting and given us some insight into rick's character but it ends up feeling generic and lame. i'm sure there were some epic LOTR references i missed. morty jr. never had a real character and thus whatever lukewarm conflict he's supposed to have with morty is resolved in a similarly tepid way. salvatron was also a lame antagonist. the cog b-plot was better by virtue of something happening, you'd think rick would be smart enough to not be played by the cogs. if anything, you'd expect rick to reject the predeterminism thing and try fucking with their predictions. also i get they're annoying on purpose with their "conehead" speak but it's still annoying. it's kinda funny that he threw the food truck into the trash dimension. one of the worse episodes of the season, maybe bottom 3. bottom 5 for sure.

The era of major cultural relevance for R&M came and went so quickly, it is almost unreal. It used to be common to see references to the show and it drew a wide audience. So I actually feel inclined to agree, most people buying merch of Rick and Morty at this time are probably coasting off of memberberries for the early show. But there may still be a significant number of people keeping up with it indirectly, even if they aren't watching, so I doubt they'll get rid of the show if they want to hold onto relevance (for the sake of the merch) as long as possible.

I feel like R&M came at the tail end of the cable TV model providing this shared experience of media. It CANNOT be overstated how inescapable this show was at it's height there was SO MUCH merch, there were so many ads they animated with R&M hawking Wendy's or the PS5, I distinctly remember a statue of Rick's spaceship installed in a park of a city I was living in at the time. IT WAS EVERYWHERE the wait for S3 was long, but by ratings it also did the best, and the critical reception to S4, while a mixed bag, was also huge, and then after that, out of nowhere people just seemed to move on, it's relevance just vanished overnight, and it's not like it got replaced by some new show. Like I said I think the rise of these streaming services played a huge part in stratifying people's attention, and we'll probably never see something as culturally relevant and widespread as it ever again, for better or worse. (though imo probably for the best, the fandom was absolutely insufferable at it's height.)

Since roiland left, rick and morty has gone downhill. Really downhill. He was rick and morty. Sure rick and morty had been mediocre since season 3, but still watchable. But now with roiland gone, what little good there was, left with him. Harmon doesn't know how to write rick and morty. I only saw a few episodes of community and didn't care for it. Not hate it, I just had no interest in it. I see rick and morty slowly becoming more like community in certain ways. Mostly disinteresting. The novelty is wearing off fast. After Evil Morty destroyed the Citadel, killing the Council of Ricks and reset Portal travel so the majority of the Ricks/Mortys are now stuck in their home dimensions since nearly all of them were given Portal tech by Rick Prime instead of inventing it themselves like our Rick.
This season a group of Rick clones tried to rebuild the Citadel by enslaving clone Mortys but were stopped by a non-clone Rick who'd invented cloning.
Evil Morty is a villain but since the whole Rick Prime stuff we haven't seen him. The show doesn't have a main villain atm but that might change in the upcoming finale.

The divorce plotline ending took away Beth's insufferableness and they've mostly dropped the plotline of her desperately seeking her dad's approval. She's not much of a character anymore but she hasn't been this bearable since the first episode.

The worst character is in fact Summer. She's obsessed with making Rick love and respect her like Beth used to be, has Morty's "I may be an interdimensional traveling badass but I'm still a teenager with teenage interests" plotlines but absolutely unfunny now that she's completely submerged into the sci-fi plotlines (instead of either a rare tagalong or being forced into it like the earlier episodes), and all the rick-junior trait she's had since season 3 does is make her obnoxiously edgy.

A weird tangent but this>>149496953 made me appreciate ONE's writing much more. In his stories even when the out of the norm element is centeal to a character, said character doesn't live exclusively in that element.
That was a lot of the fun in season 1. Most of the early plots revilved around Morty's school-life, and the intrusions Rick made into it.

It was a fun concept but quickly devolved and got repeatitive pretty quickly. The whole time they're going "urgh we don't want to get involved in lame precog story" while doing exactly that the whole time

Thought I was okay. I did not hate compared to a few but actually did not enjoy it. I don't have much to say about it, I thought that garbage planet idea of rick weird drunk ideas was interesting, but it was just a bunch of robots and robot uprising.

I like the very subtle joke with the precogs and the truk where they narrowly miss hitting a bunch of kids just before it parked. But otherwise nothing in those jokes was funny, even worse because you saw the ending coming miles alway and rick lampshading did not help.

There is a better episode here somewhere, where you can explore a bit rick weird inventions in garbage world for a few sci-fi jokes and more morty jr and morty bonding, as they flipping the script on the precog episode so it doesn't feel so repetitive. Somehow I even think they did the entire precog thing joke a number of times also, or at least solar opposites did? I don't think this deserves an entire b-plot, tho. feels more like a trow away joke that would be a lot funnier if they did not dragged trough an entire episode.

Ive noticed the episodes so far this season have really dialed down on the cynicism and have really Nickelodeon tier plot lines with a character walking away learning some kind of moral lesson.

I liked the Jerry episode last week, and this one wasn't TERRIBLE but it also wasn't that great either. Wholesome, but pretty mediocre. The best part of the episode were the garbage drones.

I found that watching this show with a negative mindset actually really helps you to at least enjoy it, I think this episode was not so terrible because everyone expected to be garbage, but it was just okay.

You have to understand that the golden days of the show are gone, and everything now kinda sucks and every character is ass. When you understand that and see the show for what it is you can actually at least not hate the viewing experience. You can even be pleasant surprise like with the last week episode.

It kinda reminds me a bit of how I watch shows like Family guy by understanding that new FG is not Seth Macfarlane FG and you should not watch expecting anything like that. And sometimes you can even find episodes you like and thank the lord is not a summer episode the same way you can thank the lord is not a Lois episode and the characters are only that to bait the horny bastards who want to fuck the redheads.

If you give up the idea you will receive something good and understand what the show is now, a bunch of pop culture references from hacky tv writers in shitty characters walking in the skin of once beloved ones you can at least take what you get. I don't think modern Rick and morty or even FG are good, but at very least I can finish the episodes, I can't say the same for a lot of the episodes from the Simpsons or Bobs burgers. When I can't finish an episode and stop caring about new ones altogether is when it will be 100% dead to me. For now I will feast in the rotten flesh and maggots of it's corpse. since I don't have anything better to do.

They should cancel Rick and Morty and make a scud cartoon
