The only times that there was serious obstacles and rough patches that weren't bullshit editorial/writer attempts at splitting them up were during DeFalco and JMS's runs where they eventually get back together to an even stronger relationship.
Also JMS's whole direction of getting them back together was real kino and they had to go through that rough patch of awkwardness after she was scared after the plane "death" and kidnapping. Fate conspired against them and yet it brought them together during his run. JMS manages to then counter this with Peter and MJ expressing their own free will in expressing how they care for each other and the actions they took in spite of fate. Combine all this with the totem stuff and that's why people fellate the first half of the run a lot.

So it is possible that Gwen's death was the demon's first attempt to stop Spider-Man. But after Gwen's death, Mary Jane came into his life.The got married. But then OMD happened and Peter and MJ got separated. But Mephisto will not stop.

Do you read the comics? She is more involved in side-plots than getting saved all the time. There have been times where that does happen but she is mostly there as support for Peter and other characters as well as connecting Peter more to the civilians and having B-plots going on. Raimi's take was basically just Gwen except even more unreasonable with her self-interest in those movies. That was just to add more unnecessary Parker Luck type stuff for some reason. Dunno why it happened that way but at least the first movie was largely tame about it.

If you step outside those bad adaptations maybe you'll get why she is liked and why Felicia isn't as emphasized. She probably should get more AU stories where she is the main love interest but sadly creators are hacks nowadays.

If Marvel had their kino senses tingling they'd have a writer undo OMD in a fashion similar to The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. Peter being the only one to realize what's wrong and Mephisto working to stop him but failing would be pretty tight. A good arc that would have anons mad that they are teasing this again but maybe OMD is undone first, and Peter still has his post-OMD memories and is freaking out.

Only now do I realize how Tim Sale's artwork can sometimes look like Sienkiewicz or Miller art. Weird. Anyway, Blue is an alright story even if it romanticizes Gwen a bit.
Same with The Kiss in Webspinners but that felt more like a real story. And by that I mean, Blue felt like a 00's story transplanted into the 60's while The Kiss felt like a reflection on that era that also acknowledged the realities of that era and retconned it just enough to leave the story with an impact. Also MJ's hair at the end of The Kiss is quite sexy. That design and Parallel Lives MJ are interesting clashes between her 60's and 80's looks.

Gerry Conway and Ryan Stegman did just that with Spinneret and she was quite a well-liked character too. But the hack editors at Marvel didn't push Renew Your Vows as much as they did Spider-Gwen even before the 2018 film made her popular.

Spec and TAS are good. They get her personality down. Ultimate and 2017 are shot adaptations overall anyway. Games don't focus on the supporting cas that much and modern writers like at Insomniac can't write fun women without removing sex appeal. Well /co/ has had retro threads of stuff in the 00's for cartoons and comics and /v/ has had similar threads of like games with beach aesthetics. I'd say Spider-Man maybe has it worse than other pieces of media because of how bad the stagnation and apathy has become. But I would say media in general has become like that because businessmen have become so risk adverse and focused on short term gains for so long that the talent to make a quality product has declined rapidly to a smaller population who are not lazy like the new group.
