I think the tag is most often used to mean canon setting but not much else. E.g. for an AU canon-divergence Harry Potter fic it would mean that the characters are still wizards in the HP setting, but anything else could be different and the difference may be large or small. If it was just plain AU this usually means bigger changes like modern setting would have the characters as regular people, regency AU, etc. Not sure there's a widely used tag for what you're looking for

After the last James Bond film, I was considering trying to write a fanfic where he turns against MI6 and joins a IRA style British nationalist group. I was mostly in videogame and comic fandoms at the time which selected for online fandoms that were more even in terms of gender split. For games in particular that presented a stronger barrier of entry because you actually needed to play and finish the games because youtube letsplays and twitch weren't a thing yet so that really cut down on the sort of people who would write fanfic in the first place. I used to be pretty active in fanfic, took a multi-year break, came back and was surprised at how much the scene had changed.
