Richard is a character that definitely stopped fitting as the show shifted more towards social commentary and being "Kid-Friendly South Park" over making each Waterson a disaster artist. Since they didn't really want to make him their own Randy Marsh for whatever reason, they didn't really know what to do with him. Any message or joke they could do, they ended up giving to other side characters. And their bias for Nicole and her backstory means she take up all the pathos for that, even with episodes focusing on his parents.

Gumball by the end of its run became an incredible writer/storyboarder-driven show. Every just became a mouthpiece or ideal of the writer over a concrete personality to form around. It's why characters like Anais can flip-flop between Lisa Simpson and Literally Evil. Whatever worked for the episode. So it became super clear that just...no one wanted to write for Richard. Leaving his character in a super awkward place where everyone in the family but him is trying really hard to fit in with society. Either the show needed to adapt Richard to their more contemporary humor (unironically being a livestreamer/game reviewer like some bits had him as would be really fitting), rollback on such and go for more random slice-of-lfie plots where he can fit as his goofy fuckup self, or just stop trying to make him appear heroic and go harder on the fat bastard angle like his early appearances. Stuff like his petty war against Mr. Waterson or the family prank war are some of his best episodes.

It is true that they write a lot of the backstory for Nicole to justify the relationship, but that's the thing. They wrote a lot for Nicole. Off the top of my head, I think there's a 2-to-1 ratio in terms of focus episodes. They like to write for her more than Richard. And we learn a lot about why and how, while with Richard we really only know

You aren't wrong. Even if you like the drama episodes, the core cast are just too inconsistent as characters for them to work as any but jokes. So it really should stick with the strong points of whacky, over-the-top humor. But even then, Nicole works better being such a literal tiger mom. They still struggle to find things for Richard to do or joke with.
Say what you will about all the bumbling adult sitcom cartoon dads and how horrible they all are as people/dads/characters, they at least have something to do and real desires to work for that give them incredibly noteworthy and memorable jokes. And while Richard isn't a main character like those are, given how many genuine banger lines the series have built and how little Richard gets, you can see where my apprehension with the character comes from.

I've finally rewatched at least 95 percent of the show at this point, skipping some episodes from season to season that make me cringe or seethe a little too much, because I'd rather wait to watch it all at the end since I like hurting myself.
That said I think I'd rate the entire show as 2>4>1≥6>3>5 because I feel like I've seen enough to understand what I watched and that anything else I watch would just be an outlier that I shouldn't let weigh on my opinions too much.
I didn't hate it as much as I thought, but I didn't walk out all that great either. It just kinda sucks that for me a lot of season 2 episodes are the highlights of entire thing, and that the vast majority of 200 episodes (well 190 or so for me but you get the point) doesn't even come close to touching the best of that season. There are great episodes outside of season 2 but they are few and far between that I would have dropped this show as early as season 3 if I wasn't watching this for season 7. Good lord that season absolutely did not click for me at all.
Honestly I'm being rather vague about my overall feelings from everything I watched but don't confuse that with cynicism. I just shouldn't be awake right now as I woke up too early and so some of my thoughts are coming out very cloudy.

The show has gone out of its way to explain Richard is not a father and not an adult man. and even worse for Richard its canon that in the show's universe everyone MUST be killed if Richard ever decides to get even a part time job. When you do exaggerated nonsense like that people will go "I don't care what the show's writing says to defend itself Richard is shit."

And that's really the bottom line. Richard is all the negatives of a sitcom father but none of the positives. And what little values Richard tries to give his children they're not good like remember the competition to be the laziest person in town where Richard challenged Gumball to being lazy. Who wants to even be such a lazy sloth? Richard is bad and I think the worst value Richard ever tried to teach his children is how to shoplift. Teaching your kids intentionally to be thieves is horrible. That alone is why Nicole should have divorced him.

Richard is shit entirely. Nicole is also shit but that's because she has horrible standards for men and ignores all the warning signs that this obese thing is not husband material and she dooms her offspring to being influenced by this guy.

I feel like it's so close to being a solid episode but it effectively cuts off right before the events of the show that leads up to this point. Almost as if Nicole is trying to repress her memories.

From what I watched it felt like the entire Gumball team was hit hard by budget and time constraints and they never really got out of that groove. Seasons 3 and 5 for me at least scream this the loudest. I just think the artstyle concept initially pushed was too expensive for long term, they realized this, and they all adjusted accordingly (there are huge character biases so not really; there are also many other peculiar things I noticed but that’s less easy to point out).
Of course I’m not really going to defend the end product despite this feeling I get because the only true perspective I get is the one where my butt is on a seat behind a screen that’s playing out 10-11 minute sequences over 240 times, that’s what I know for sure, and when most of that is just god awful metaphorical quips of Gumball and Darwin just talking to each other exclusively, well it just makes me want to crunch a fucking brick in half.

Season 2 made them bicker all the time and they were ready to get at each other, like when Gumball knocked him through a fucking brick wall because Darwin was being an assertive cunt to everyone. And even the small moments like where they were going to fight in the school yard because of Simian, or when they almost turned on each other because of William. Or how they both fucked up with Banana Joe because of how they differed on the situation for the two episodes that focus on Joe in S2. They had a fire ready to blaze against each other and it was rude and violent but it made them stand out against each other to show their own agency on a situation. Even if it’s a small moments that they snapped out of, you can see their base instincts to get on top of situation and that’s what’s important I think.
The Safety is a funny episode to me because Darwin took initiative that goes against Gumball, but he’s not really there for most of it, and it’s in the most soft way possible. And that’s how I feel about a lot of the show once season 3 happened. The brothers just became so much softer with each other and a result of that is Darwin lost his agency and presence because he just doesn’t have the will to go against Gumball like he once did. Darwin might complain that he’s being dragged along, but it’s not a fight like it used to be. There are moments when Darwin will sass back but it’s so infrequent that’s it’s doesn’t really add to his character at this point.
