He's stupid.
His way of life negatively impacts his family.
On that last one that is a big strike against Richard. Many idiot or bumbling fathers get excused so long as they still provide for their families in some way but Richard doesn't do that, in fact during the episode where Nicole explains why she's so tough she explains she's raised three children AND a husband. Nicole doesn't consider Richard a husband but rather a wink wink "husband" meaning an extra child. The show has gone out of its way to explain Richard is not a father and not an adult man. and even worse for Richard its canon that in the show's universe everyone MUST be killed if Richard ever decides to get even a part time job. When you do exaggerated nonsense like that people will go "I don't care what the show's writing says to defend itself Richard is shit."
And that's really the bottom line. Richard is all the negatives of a sitcom father but none of the positives. And what little values Richard tries to give his children they're not good like remember the competition to be the laziest person in town where Richard challenged Gumball to being lazy. Who wants to even be such a lazy sloth? Richard is bad and I think the worst value Richard ever tried to teach his children is how to shoplift. Teaching your kids intentionally to be thieves is horrible. That alone is why Nicole should have divorced him.
Richard is shit entirely. Nicole is also shit but that's because she has horrible standards for men and ignores all the warning signs that this obese thing is not husband material and she dooms her offspring to being influenced by this guy.
