>What is CHEER!
Cheer! is the story of four teenage cheerleaders in the school of Tandy Gardens, a school where magical things happen.

One day, while at school and magic was running amuck, 4 jocks were magically transformed into 4 girl cheerleaders. With no memories of the magical event, and their past lives, they assumed their new lives as the school’s cheer squad.

>CHaracters:
Alexandra King
Alexandra "Alex" King is a cheerleader at Tandy Gardens High School. Alex is the leader of the TGHS cheerleading squad, and takes her duties very seriously. She is given to unnecessarily long-winded speeches with unnecessarily long words, and uses military style analogies to motivate her squad. [spoiler...] Alex has an intense rivalry with fellow TGHS student Lindsay Verte, and the two dislike each other strongly.

Joanna Star
Joanna "Jo" Star is a cheerleader at Tandy Gardens High School. Jo is the bouyant heart of the cheer squad, always looking on the bright side of even the cloudiest of issues and willing to take one for the team. Jo is amazingly perceptive, and posesses some profound insights on the nature of life and those around her. She tries to mask this by appearing silly, but it is one of her most endearing features. Jo is also a fan of Joss Whedon's "Firefly".

Samantha Smith
Samantha "Sam" Smith is a cheerleader at Tandy Gardens High School. Sam is the creative focus of the cheer squad: She creates the cheer squad's custom uniforms, chooses their performance music, and choreographs the cheers. Her cooking skills are reknowned throughout the school. [spoiler...] Sam has taken it upon herself to be Alex's "Minder", helping people cut through her abasive outer qualities and helping Alex to restrain herself from her own long-windedness. In the "Win a Date With a Cheerleader" Raffle, Sam wound up going on a date with Robert

Cher Lita Harper
Cher Lita Harper, known to friends as "Lita", is a cheerleader at Tandy Gardens High School, along with Alexandra King, Samantha Smith, and Joanna Star. Lita is the vamp of the group, unashamed of using her substantial femenine wiles and keen wit to get what she wants from anyone. Perhaps influenced by the many years she has spent playing Dungeons and Dragons she is fond of concocting elaborate forms of revenge when she feels slighted. [spoiler...] Lita enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons in her spare time, along with Gabriel Masters, Ken Bradsworth, Preston Abraham, and Keith Huntington. Lita has forced the group to sign an elaborate contract regarding how they can interact at TGHS while away from the gaming table. The group doesn't mind: They get to play D&D with an actual GIRL!

Or we could just explain in a very basic way; that 4 asshole Jock where transformed into cheeleaders those who know about the change think is an improvement and everyone else doesn't care the jocks are gone, now with no memories of their former selves and not need to uphold their macho personas they can live a new life

You know taking aside this is a spinoff of a TF comic, I like the idea of a group of cheerleaders trying to hype up the school spirit on a school where people don't really give a fuck about anything. Usually the Cheerleader are the Stacies in the story but here it feels like they are underdogs.

The original Webcomic tried discussing that with mixed results. It had an entire arc where the main character finds out about all the characters who were transformed and just left that way, and her sense of ethics compelled her to fix it, only to discover someone has been going around town covering up all the changes with selective memory wipes for the transformed and the civilian population.

The results were kind of mixed, since one victim just came to accept their new status quo as a teenage girl, another lost a boyfriend but lived under a general mindfog that made everyone ignore she's got a half-horse body and could live a normal life. But the jocks had the unique position of everyone but them knowing that they used to be men...and absolutely nobody caring, since their new brainwashed personalities were a lot peppier and considered "the real them" since their stereotypical bullying habits and "macho personalities" were holding them back from truly doing what they wanted such as partaking in nerdy interests or being supportive of other human beings. And since they had no friends outside of each other, weren't dating, and their family and siblings approve just because more than a couple of them were hoping to have daughters to begin with, the main character is forced to just play along with the collective masquerade that four meathead jocks are now popular stereotypical ditzy perky cheerleaders.

The fact that this spinoff webcomic was made to actually examine whether it really was such a perfect "and everyone lived happily ever after" ending for the jocks shows you're in like-minded company when it comes to asking these questions. But there are a whole lot of reasons that people don't interrogate it further in-story. Not GOOD reasons, mind, but they exist. And probably makes Jo's situation far worse because she remembers her past life, knows nobody wants that or her old self back, and has to just act like she's okay with it.

I very much like it. As people were talking on the EGS thread a lot of these comics undervalue masculinity and the original personality of the characters, so it's very refreshing seeing one that actually goes on its way to deconstruct it, in the case with Jo.

I find the other characters pretty charming too, tho Lita could tone down a bit the d&dism
Anonymous No.149550430 >>149551796 >>149552519

Yeah, as a spinoff, it does quite a lot for these characters that I'm pretty sure none of the creators of the Wotch had much time or interest for. And the page of Jo talking eagerly about being a football jock and then becoming depressed that all her team's accomplishments were wiped away is probably the closest to asking if the cheer squad were even that bad people as jocks and not just being moody asshole teenagers. It's always nice to see fans introspect the original work from different angles.

And helps that the art is much better. The artist for Wotch Cheer closed the comic but still has their deviantart up, and they're still actively improving ever since the comic ended. Makes me look forward to if they undertake another large project like another webcomic in the future.

Yeah, I think Miranda got involved and used that spell again.

The interesting thing that I've sort of notice between this and the Wotch is that a basic magic transformation of the setting seems to be a direct swap. Like, a straight dude will turn into a straight girl, but they'll keep the same interests and likes they already had as well as core personality traits (which you can also see with Sonja too), with any mental stuff coming mainly from hormones and the new orientation (Wolfie looking at a girl's ass when changed). So the question is how much of these mental changed are magic based, or are just because woman function and think differently than men, so there's just going to be a shift in how one acts due to the new biology.

Jo gushing over football is cute, and it sucks nobody else seems to care though.

It's one of the things a number of earlier tf comics got flack for in that they will depict depict mtf changes as more or less the original personality but with their more negative personality traits ground down or outright gone, as though becoming a girl is like being turned into an "ideal" self rather than swapping out certain issues for other ones. But it wasn't one of those things that I think was meant to be malicious or insensitive, just a side effect.

Though I also liked Jo's reaction since it's almost identical to the one I got when I asked someone who was on their football team in highschool what was the appeal.

Lita is massive fucking NERD, but is insecure about it. Which is why her constantly referencing DnD is funny because she's probably hot enough that nobody would give a fuck. I'd bet at some point they're would be some storyline centered around her getting over the insecurity, probably during some plan of Alex's to promote school unity between the nerds and the popular kids.

It feels like Identity Death but the comic bends backward to show the jocks weren’t identity dead, more like memory manipulated and having the one mental issue that made them aggressive removed. It’s a clumsy retcon but is clear an attempt to tackle the issue was made. There are hints that their memories are not completely gone just buried deep, at some point Ivan mentions Alex apologizing to him for bullying him despite admitting she didn’t know why she was doing it.
I think most people had issues with it because unlike Ming who had a choice, with the jocks, theie choice was made for them from a place of vengeful apathy. I think a lot find the idea that someone could die and disappear and nobody give a damn about them distressing no matter the person. The fact that only the snoopy Ivan even made an attempt to ask around what happened to their early selves while everyone else is just glad they aren’t around drives the point home.

The panel where she tries to throw that football ball is the cruelest to me, cause it's not even about strength, it's about your body being unable to perform like it used to, is almost an allegory for having a mayor injury.
But beside that I think is cruel also because she can see the way it improved her life but can't choose to improve her original self over this experience, that decision has been taken for her and she can't do anything about it, not even retaking her old interests

>But it wasn't one of those things that I think was meant to be malicious or insensitive, just a side effect.
Same, I just found it interesting that in the Wotch, it seems physical magic and mental magic seem to be sperate spells that mainly need to be cast separately, and if they're casted together it can fuck up royally. (which we can see with Even more than once). So the logic for the mental shifts we see in the comic mainly seemed to be more biological than magical except when noted, which would actually explain why Jo remembers everything; the main spell was physical so whatever mental magic was secondary and probably wasn't as strong or effective.

But yeah, it don't think there's really any malice behind the author's intent, and Jo's speech was really sweet at how earnest it was. I didnt think that i would dislike that the students are apathetic to the school, so this is well written for sure.

The apathy does remind me a lot of the general attitude towards "school spirit" back in the 90s and early 2000s in media, where the concept was seen as kind of a farce to basically celebrate the school itself over the students and that any sense of unity or excitement was faked to hell and back, so I get why the Cheerleaders have such an uphill battle.

That wouldn't be a good idea
>have major character drama that can speak an entire arc of the comic
>solve it in two pages

It's a very interesting aspect of the character, solving it at the start seems like a mistake.

If anything I'd like if the comic focused on humanizing the initial jocks more, and this weird vibe that they seem to have (like King's subconscious referring to her as a boy).

I agree...
I think that Jo's "bittersweet optimism" is the soul of the comic, and is the main feeling I get when reading it. It's also very significative with the title being "CHEERS" and our MCs being cheerleaders.
Gearfae No.149553958

Let's understand this, a character being able to rationalise their feelings doesn't mean they solved the issue.
Jo just got through this mayor flow of emotions and realized she's been hiding her problems from herself more than from her friends, that doesn't solve the issue, it just acknowledge it

That is 100% an anime thing, any school irl with uniforms would never allow you to alter them. But it's such an easy visual shorthand for distinguishing characters and showing you flashes of their personality before they open their mouths that it's still used to this day

On account of the school not having any cheerleaders prior to the 4 becoming girls. Which does say a lot about the school thou. Which is kind of strange since while Tandy does seem to be a public school, it gets a lot of very rich kids. So it not lacking in funds.

The original (and early) wotch comic treated it as gags you weren't suppose to think much about. Think of it as a sitcom, something happens, you laugh, and we move to another thing. If anything it was the fan reaction that caused the comic to treat the transformation with a little more though, if not for that Ming would still be a anime stereotype and the Jock wouldn't get any characterization.

Depends on how important their character was. Usually just go on the adventurer minus their character, sometimes the game master or player controls them with permission. It's generally considered more kosher to do the former though, cause if the latter happens and the absent player comes back to find their player character died in the game while they weren't at the table, there tends to be a pretty large amount of backlash.

The comic is good, warms my heart. While the wotch tries to be like some newspaper comic this one is full anime.

Part of me would actually prefer that it was its own thing, - like if the story used OCs in a new setting, or if the protags had moved to a different school - because the fantastic and magical elements would pop up more if there wasn't "The Wotch" walking around the school with endless magical powers.

This said the cameos here were well done. Everyone of the 4 girls has something going on and seem to have ACTUAL arcs.

I quite like King. She CARES a lot, but people don't seem to care to what she has to say, everyone kept clowning on her speech and she continued to gon on, its both funny and sad. I think her arc (and the theme of school spirit) would get resolved with her learning to chill out a bit.

Honestly I like the implications that part of the guys is there, I wish the comic delved in it a bit more for drama. Samantha in particular, I would like to see her remember a bit of her past and see how it ties to her father's relationship.

But overral I think it worked well to balance comedy and drama. The comic feels like something planned rather than something made to be infinite, which is a shame because it never got finished.

The principal imo is the hottest character AND she is funny to read. My favorite character created by the author.

I agree, the character are pretty solid, I like that it doesn't go for cliches, like we get a mean girl who pretty early sort of puts aside her petty rivalry and start playing detective, I do wonder who this crosses over with the main story though, its kind of weird having so many shadow governments, secret societies and random characters going to the same school.

Something with Alex catches my attention, Her parents seem to be absent enough that they are barely see their child. Do you think we could have got a situation where they show up and don't recognize Alex because they weren't there when Miranda brainwashed everyone?

Like I know that Wotch is usually light hearted, but the thing works with Jason because his mother is a total cuckoo and she doesn't seem to think less of him transformed or not It's also easier to buy it coming from just one character.

Its harder to buy the notion that some of the others have caring parents (like Samantha and Lita) and they just shrug things off when their sons don't seem to be aware of what happened.

The parents being influenced by magic might not be as sunshine, BUT it does open potential for exploring the relationship between the characters and their parents.

Lets look at it from the parents perspective for a moment

You have a son that is both deeply unhappy and with an deeply unpleasant personality, and activly toxic friends, that always prevent each other from improving themselves. So even if you talk to them and get thou to them, they revert the next day.

They as a group are so unpopular that despite being national level football players, their school has zero cheerleaders, meaning that everybody has either quit, or graduated from the cheerleader team.

Then one day they come home as a girl, suddenly following all the advice you tried to get them to take over the years. Their friend group that once dragged them down are now supporting each-other, and helping them improve their lives.

You have to ask yourself if them being a girl is an acceptable trade for the massive improvement they have undergone. Not relevant for Alex clearly, Lita, and Sam's family just seem happy their kids are much happier with themself. No idea about Jo, but Jo probably gave a speech about how much better things are so ok on their end.
