Holy shit Kahn sounds terrible, not a single aspect of his original voice was gotten right.

He says Hank Hill way too normally, despite the also weird straining to belt out the whole line
>>149688363 (OP)He may sound like complete ass, but at least the guy in the booth isn't white. Gotta keep our acting roles segregated unless the character's a white guy don't ya know.

>most va's dead or replaced
oh its going to be a complete shit show
>>149688363 (OP)I like that he sounds like a white guy afraid of being too offensive with his accent
>>149688433I know, it's wild considering that his new VA is actually asian.
>>149688412I'm glad I won't have to see Luanne degraded through tweened animation, modern writing, and a lackluster voice. She already had a couple shitty moments in the original run but everyone seems to look back on her and remembers her best aspects and agrees she was loveable. Also melons they'd never do today.
They won't ruin best girl like they will with all the others.
>>149688363 (OP)How does he sound whiter than the actual white guy who used to voice him? The voice also really doesn't fit the personality.
What is the point of a show revival where 3/4ths of the voice cast is dead?
>>149688363 (OP)Wow, I thought you were exaggerating but... Wow... Yeah, the new VA is awful. Is Cleveland from Family Guy literally the only time they didn't fuck it up when doing these "sensitivity" recasts?
>>149688363 (OP)Did they even get a LE OCEAN?
Without saying anything about the dumbass reason that his voice changed...FUCK that is a terrible replacement.
How to do cast someone who sounds YOUNGER than the original actor, when the character is supposed to have aged 8 years? He sounds like he's in his 20s.
>>149688808They hired a literal Cleveland impersonator in his case, which is why the change worked.
>>149688363 (OP)He sounds like a white guy from jersey or some shit. When Khan made redneck jokes before it was funny but now he just comes off as an asshole fratboy.
>>149688839No, he's Chinese. But hey, same continent, close enough.
Reminds me of Simu Liu laying into a woman selling bubble tea because it's "his culture". He's Chinese, bubble tea is Taiwanese (although ironically there's nothing more Chinese than claiming ownership of Taiwan).
>>149688486He just sounds like a shit actor. Huss could make Kahn annoying and snippy but was also very good at humanizing him. This new guy sounds like he won't be able to do that at all.
>>149688691Yeah I was hoping they'd scrap the whole endeavor after Hardwick died. Since then a couple more have passed. At this point they should just do one season then call it quits.
>>149688363 (OP)He doesn't sound too bad. I dunno, maybe it's because I have the shitty taste of Hulurama in mt mouth and the fact that the voices of Officer URL and Amy Wong's dad were replaced and they sounded very off
>>149689159It would render the one season a pointless half-hearted nostalgia-mining revivial that will be forgotten and rarely seen by new audiences who watch the original, but them's the breaks.
Hank didn't need to live in an isolated base in Saudi Arabia for the "fish out of water" thing to work. It'd be much more relateable to just... have him continue to be the person who doesn't care for modern developments. After the show ended, and even around the time it was on its last legs, shit was developing at an accelerated rate. There's no reason we needed "A what? An ama... amazon... drone??" old man gags when we could've skipped over "Hank throws a smartphone across the kitchen in fear" jokes and just continued him not liking the modern world and dealing with it. But no, everything has to have that fucking Rocko's Modern Life type revival where the characters are thrown into it suddenly so we can get a bunch of lazy facebook "I don't understand! Ah huh? A whut?! Are we all-gender??" jokes
>>149689245It'd also end the show on having came back just to uncouple Kahn and Minh right at the end without closure beyond Kahn being forced to move in with Bill.
>>149688947Don't forget: Simu Liu had no problem playing a Korean despite /not looking even remotely Korean/ (and the rest of the cast, save the best friend, are all actually Korean) then getting pissed that the show he was on got a spin off for one of the white characters. Fuck that guy.
>>149689232Interesting how Matt Groening shows suffered the most from these racial recastings.
They really need impersonators like with Cleveland.

>>149689306You know people are trying to give it a chance since the original showrunners are back but when you put it this way, the whole premise of this revival is retarded from the word go.
>>149689518At least American Dad didn't have this problem and they kept themselves out of trouble after all these years
>>149688412>TweenedIt's apparently frame by frame but they reuse lines. I guess that counts as tweening still but technically not rigged. Yet, it somehow looks worse than actual rigging. I'm not joking, Rick and Morty/Solar Opposites has more pleasing animation
>>149688363 (OP)Holy shit that's bad
>Inb4 Don't judge it before you see it CHUD!Sick of cum guzzlers trying to defend this garbage.
>>149689673If only Jim Henson went to a doctor on time.
>>149688808The new Cleveland has actual skill as an impersonator. I don't necessarily agree with the recast but I can't be mad at him because he actually does a good job
>>149688363 (OP)God he sounds horribly off. He sounds like an awkward white guy who works at small record or comic book store from the early to mid 2000s that just got finished smoking a blunt in the back. kek
>>149689720>Dies at 53 from a sore throatI'm still upset
>>149689728In other words, he was actually hired more for his skills than his skin color.
>>149688412Hell the fucking premise is out of Character. There is not a single fucking universe where Hank fucking Hill would move out of the United States, especially not to fucking Saudi Arabia. Hank is so fucking pro american his fucking TV is still American.
>>149689681Funny enough their one black guy was voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson so they already beat Simpsons and Futurama to the punch.
>>149689518Even Cleveland sounds dogshit after the recast.
>>149688433except kahns entire character is him doing everything in his power to be seen as a power player including behaving like a white person and his only displaying his being Laotian when its to his benefit. i consider this an evolution of that.
>>149689673I don't know why, but I thought this was a joke about cancer changing Jim Henson's voice when I was younger
>>149688401It's the double standard that gets to me; for example Azula had to be recasted with an Asian actress because Grey DeLisle was too white but that same Asian actress is allowed to voice Sue Storm.

>>149689534that was a complete travesty god damn, all those years waiting just to be disappointed
>>149688363 (OP)fuck the voice acting and animation looks like ass. I would honestly prefer storyboards to this.
>>149689866Because it's about removing whites from roles. People will cry this or that but at the end of the day that's what it's about. Notice Phil Lamarr was able to voice Jack despite being a black guy voicing a japanese? If he were white he would've gotten the boot in any future projects.
>>149688401except Chane is still allowed to be Pammy?
I guess female counts as PoC now
>>149689903Lamarr would end up voicing another Japanese guy in Loud House and to this day still hasn't been recasted.
>>149688363 (OP)>Hire an asian actor because they think the original voice might be seen as offensive>now everyone says he sounds like a white guy doing a shitty impression>the literal opposite result they wantedbro

Then again doctors might just be saying that because we're now in the era of "please don't make me work anymore, i have to get people in and out in 5 minutes"
>>149689786eeeyup.
I was really hoping Mike Judge would go to bat for us on some of this shit, but I see he's lost his way as badly as his buddies Matt and Trey.
>>149689903Phil backpedaled so hard on that in a later interview, as people pointed out how hypocritical that is. He was like "yeah! it's great, in animation you can voice anybody."
It helps that he was talking to Jim Cummings, who, while not taking any stances or anything that would reject anybody from being on his podcast, does frequently say things about how like, yknow, they tried to get on him for being white in the California Raisins wayyy back.. and all they did was just 'recast' (the same people)
>>149688363 (OP)It should've been him.
>>149689924Would not shock me if that's the reason, that being a woman was enough for it to "not be a big deal" compared to a white man.
>>149689831People are just looking for reasons to be mad. This is going to be great.
>>149689989honestly he could have done that basic voice okay I think.
but I'm still not tuning in to 'connie is polyamorous now!' fuck you
>>149690003I think the networks are backing down on this shit, so the ones who stepped down were basically just doing it to not get their houses burned down. Californians are justifiably scared of fire. if George Floyd happened there, there'd be nothing left. Just razed completely to the ground.
>>149689831The only whisper of a point you have is that accents do change over time
but it's been what, 8 years? 10? meanwhile Kahn has been living in the US for 20 years in the original show, in California. and he's still got this accent, so..
>>149690049That sounds about right, lord knows social media has been a net detriment on the world.
>>149689786The company towns in Saudi are more Americans is than America has been since the 90s tbqhwy

>>149689969He got clowned on at every signing when hed give up voicing Samurai Jack or other non black roles. He was hostile and told people to not use his words against him but that made him lose fans and his ego couldnt handle that
>>149690116Yeah I lost so much respect for him after that shit, what a faggot.
>>149690101We had this wonderful thing.. this internet where smart and weird people got on, and normies stayed offline and did their own whatever bullshit
then someone realized hey, ghetto idiots will pay us a billion dollars for little ringtones and shit, because they're too stupid to use a computer. and from then on, we were sunk. Phones became a huge industry, why would anyone bother with computers? the things where, once you have one, it works for a decade and you get everything for free? Why stick with the old internet where compatibility remains and we look at 30 year old websites with free content?
Naw, have to change everything up. make it really locked down so you have to pay for every part of it. sabotage Flash, no more free games. Force every website to become infinite scroll garbage. and then once we have that huge userbase, manipulate them until they become an army that considers everything from the past offensive, and they tore it all down.. it's all gone, you guys. and we're about to lose what's left.
>>149690153well he learned his lesson. Watch him on Toon'd in with Jim Cummings. There wasn't a bit of that coming out of his mouth
now Alan Tudyk and April Winchell, yeah they are pozzed as fuck. And you can see this look on Jim's face whenever that comes up, he's just like 'ehhh yep...' because he's an oldschool Jesus-lovin' dude who has seen the world, and knows this isn't how it works. But he can still get along with everybody and just interview them about the craft, and be friends. and boy do I wish I could do that.
>>149688363 (OP)So they replaced a White guy doing a stereotypical Asian voice, with an Asian guy doing a fucking Boston accent? This is baffling.
I get the sentiment of wanting an Asian to voice an Asian character, even if I don't agree with it and think it's silly, I can still understand and respect that view and decision. What I don't get is, if that was the route you wanted to go why the fuck wouldn't you hold open auditions and try out a bunch of no-name Asian actors? There's guys out there who can do great voices and I'm sure one of them would be a perfect fit for Kahn, but at the same time you'd save money (that could go to, I dunno, let's say animation) while also giving someone who's not already established a chance to make a name for themselves.
>>149690110This. It makes perfect sense, people are just seething.
>>149690249It usually seems to go like that, that they go for known names to begin with who aren't hard up for roles, so the concern about not giving VAs of other races a chance is completely ignored.
>>149690249Got to get that Daily Show cred.
>>149690212>it's all gone, you guys. and we're about to lose what's left.Good. The past was offensive.
>>149688363 (OP)This legit killed any enthusiasm I had for the revival. I just can't tell if it's because of the dogshit animation or Kahn's voice.
>>149690240>because he's an oldschool Jesus-lovin' dude who has seen the world, and knows this isn't how it works. But he can still get along with everybody and just interview them about the craft, and be friends. and boy do I wish I could do that.More mature than me that's for sure.
I think the reason the Beavis and Butthead revivals worked is because the concept (two idiots mucking things up) is so simple it's impossible to fuck up and tends to be more timeless.
King of the Hill on the other hand is a lot more structured and more tied to its era so there's way more room for error.
>>149690431Best eps of KOTH are quite simple. Itโs your frumpy conservative dad going โBWAAAAHHโ when he sees the funnee degen liberal thing. Usually he gets put into an uncanny bizarre situation too which makes it funnee cause heโs the frumpy conservative dad. Blablabla

>>149690394me too, but then again my entire life has been his career, and his hard times in shitty old towns are that far in the past.
>>149690431B+B is also satire that never becomes dated. People think 'ohhh the tv is corrupting the youth' so we show two idiots who watch Beverly Hillbillies and go out and dig up sewage lines looking for oil. Because the point isn't the content of the TV, but that they're unsupervised.
in an era where more and more, people, even my age, are like 'restrict what kids can see', they need that lesson. No... just fucking supervise them.
>>149690556didn't get that far in the interview. just got to where she was like "i saw that all the broadway shows were all minorities now and.. and that's good! and I realize that's good. and then I went to the pride parade, and I thought about how those people rioted to get what they want.. and it's good!"

>>149688486Must be the type of Asian like the Apu idiot who hated that he had an accent because he didn't want to be an stereotype.
People like him do get rid quick of their accents to fit in, not to assimilate but because they actually hate themselves.
FTR, I remember some Marvel writer who was from the South saying she is a Rogue's fan and also had the same accent she immediately changed when she moved to Cali.
>>149689924Adlon isnโt voicing Chane any more, I donโt know where that rumor came from but he has an adult male voice now.
This at least is a plausible change. Kahn having a different and worse voice is not.
or Ted Wasonasong for that matter, Judgeโs voice was a really well-observed impression of a guy trying his best to avoid taking with an accent. I donโt even want to think about Octavio, if he appears.
>>149688363 (OP)He sounds like some drunk guy
>>149690952Bobby's peers all having male VAs now makes him still sounding 13 a little more weird.
>>149690110This is fucking cope. Hank doesn't love Propane more than America. His love may be comically overcharged but he doesn't love it more than his country. I don't care if their are American workforced in Saudi Arabia it's still Saudi fucking Arabia.
>HA HAAA HA HAAAA, MISSED AGAIN HANK HILLLL
How does it sound like he's forcing his line, but not in the way of forcing an accent or anything? Straining like said before is the only way I could describe that awful fucking delivery. You can't yell and not have emotion at the same time like that, man.
>>149691026Even weirder in that this new VA does have voice acting experience.
>>149691026Reminds of Camp Camp changed Max va because the voice actor was white. The new voice actor just couldn't get Max sarcasm.
>>149689903This is sorta correct. A warning for you red-tinged fucktards: the following opinion comes from a fairly left POV but I think that even you folks might agree with it if you read it through.
Anyway, the idea is that since wypipo historically played everyone in cartoons (remember: fucking Jodie Foster played one of the Chan Clan in the 70s), it's time to give other races the same opportunity. It's the E part of DEI: Equity. However, in trying to give other ethnicities equal footing with white ones they're doing a disservice to cartoons (as evidenced by the numerous VAs taking over established roles and fucking up the voices) and to true egalitarianism. If you want more "inclusion" and "equity," get some writers, directors and creators of other ethnicities on your shows. Simply swapping in non-white voices is window dressing. It doesn't create true equity.
Thank you for reading my lefty blog.

how are they going to handle Ted's voice change?
the single thing that makes him as funny as he is, is that absolutely non Asian voice they use for him, to show that Ted is a hypocrite willing to do anything to move up

man that reminds me of Carlos Alazraqui saying he was fired from Taco Bell Dog because they considered it racist, then Beverly Hills Chihuahua came out like the next year, and he's like wtf
>>149691063My belief which canโt be proved or disproved is that the quality of voice direction isnโt what it was. I saw a Simpsons episode that did a flashback to the first Christmas episode and Homer was speaking with his regular voice instead of the voice he used at the time. I picture the showrunner or whoever saying, โeh, good enoughโ instead of forcing everyone to repeat it 100 times until they get it right like God intended.
I think even Julie Kavner or Harry Shearer at their age could do better if they were forced to. Same with this guy.
>>149690528Simple, but itโs still a sitcom which requires more careful structuring than B & B and a lot more jokes.
If you look at a classic KotH episode, even the first season, there are a lot of jokes. Just not as many as a Simpsons episode, but the big writing staffs were still constantly punching the scripts up in a way that a streaming staff canโt do.
>>149690249>why wouldn't you hold open auditions and try out a bunch of no-namesBecause itโs still hollywood and modern hollywood doesnโt work that way, no matter how much it makes sense.
Thatโs why weโre getting another reboot in the first place and not a whole new show. No one in charge of anything in the entertainment industry is willing to take chances or try new things. Everything has to be familiar and safe. Every actor has to be a Name and has to come with some set of connections and all the correct optics. Talent and merit is entirely secondary.
>>149691173yes, keep lumping those together.

So even though it was already brewing with the Apu thing, Disney just announced that their animated shows would no longer have white actors voicing non-white characters. It helps no one but is an easy quick way to Do Something.
>>149691260The Problem with Apu started it but the George Floyd incident is what really fueled the flames. There's a wikipedia page about this specific topic.

>the 6 episodes he's in, both Hardwick and his replacement for Dale are used interchangeably for different lines
that sounds awful, and i noticed one of the trailers sounded like a very forced take on an old Dale, and i couldn't tell if it was Hardwick just trying to do a bad old voice or Huss having to do both Dale's unique voice on top of trying to make it sound old so you're double cartooning
According to someone on the King of the Hill subreddit so take it with a grain of salt (and yeah yeah I know, reddit, but it's how I stay up on the revival news), Toby Huss strongly implied in a recent interview/podcast thing that him stepping down as a Kahn was more due to pressure like "it'd be better for you to resign from this role before we replace you" rather than something that was completely his own choice. The person who said this didn't post a source but it sounds pretty believable. The narrative is like "Toby Huss chose to give up the role" and he did do that publicly, but we don't know exactly what went on behind the scenes.
This is why I get the vibe Breckin Meyer as Joseph was just quietly replaced and not even called back. At least Huss still had the option of voicing Dale and probably Cotton in an inevitable flashback to before his death; Breckin just kinda got completely screwed if he had any interest in returning.

>>149693785Minh is the same actor, she sounds the exact same way she does in later seasons.
>>149692061any of them good?
>>149693618Greg Daniels did an interview a year ago where he said he wasnโt sure if Kahn was coming back but they would probably recast him if they did.
What he says about the original casting is not apologetic; they cast Huss because he was already there for the smaller part of Cotton (who appeared in the pilot in a flashback). They just used their existing cast the way The Simpsons mostly gave minor male characters to one of their three male regulars.
I really doubt Huss believes his voice, which thankfully they are not yet able to airbrush out of 100+ earlier episodes, is hurting anyone, but I donโt think he, Daniels, or anyone else is going to publicly denounce this policy. Maybe after enough drinks.
And yeah, very unfair to Breckin Meyer, though it wonโt be as noticeable because he already replaced Brittany Murphy and people are used to Joseph changing voices.

They had white people voicing other ethnicities because that's what they had available. Even now, with magnitudes more ethnic voice actors to replace the white ones, they sound like shit and the whole effort is being rightfully shamed. They even kicked the adult Toph actress out and replaced her with a blind one for a fucking animated show. This virtue signaling is lame and gay and makes things worse. >The storylineโs approach to the debate is wry but accommodating, which fits a series in which the main character apparently didnโt vote for Obama and yet is instantly able to eviscerate the lack of empathy from a huckster menโs rights activist. Compassionate conservatism has a place on King of the Hill, if not in our actual political landscape. Hank Hill might bristle at the initial idea of preferred pronouns or whatever, but if somebody told him that the distinction mattered to them as a person, he would figure it out without ranting about wokeness, because Hank is a fictional character who cares about other people, no matter how he might vote. (This is more of a problem with Dale, whose conspiratorial rantings have been so totally assimilated into the QAnon-adjacent mainstream that I couldnโt bring myself to laugh.)cancel culture is acknowledged because of course

>>149696129I'm not part of this conversation but I do want to note that SFX animation and people animation are entirely different teams. >>149696027Probably many people doing the later seasons' animation (on both the domestic and Korean side) had been involved with the show when it was traditionally animated too. Like it was a continuous process from one season to the other.
Since these new seasons are now being made like 16 years later, different people are involved on both sides, corners might be being cut, I don't even know if it's the same animation studio.

>>149696710The original show was great all the way not gonna act like your take is correct
Show feels fine aside from the visuals and voicework. Dislike looking at that Hank 3/4 view with his eye bulging out.
>Can I bet Epstein?
Lost it.
>>149696689This specific stuff sounds pretty okay so far
>>149696625Literally nobody calls the Muppets a cartoon, nigger
Looks like ext (dot) to has it
>>149696686I'm on episode three right now and so far it seems like they're hinting that Nancy and Redcorn are having an affair again, but we haven't gotten hard confirmation, though we've gotten some misdirection and jokes (e.g. Joseph telling Bobby how easy it is to find out someone's having an affair re: one of the beer contest judges, then immediately greets John Redcorn)
The third episode is feeling more like KotH and it was also written by Hiscock.
>>149696145>>149696089Idk the last episode of city I've watched looked fantastic and Hikaru had some really nice direction. There is also virgin punk and Lupin for 2d movies. Also even in regards to the western scene, like you've mentioned, you had Primal which good animation. The talent still exists, it's just not used properly.
... I don't hate this. It's not season 3-6 KOTH, which is a bummer, but it's no worse than any of the later-season episodes.
Damn, I actually felt kinda bad when Hank found out Bobby wasn't using propane to cook at his restaurant.
>the cultural appropriation guy is a black guy adopted by Japs
Also yeah, the quality jump from this and the first two is really apparent. It does feel way more like a KotH episode (albeit later season) and is paced WAY better.
I'm on episode 4. Does anyone know what happened to Buck at this point?
I will say, you can tell that Johnny Hardwick was near the end of his life when he recorded these lines because he sounds ROUGH. I'm pretty curious how Huss's Dale is going to sound once I get to episode 7 or whenever the switch happens.
...I donโt hate this. Itโs no worse than being gangraped by troons but itโs also no worse than burning down the home of a really fucking gay Indian man and drinking his piss.
>>149696833Checked and not yet, still on ep 3 here but hoping Buck is still alive and shows up. Already had a Cotton mention, but no flashback to him yet either. Also, still don't know how Hank went from Strickland to Aramcoyet
>>149696833raped to death by Thatherton
The show ended before it became unwatchable garbage. They just had to fuck it all up.
>>149696871what does the MF stand for?
>>149695238Mike, Greg, why?
Why?
>>149696833Lots of characters aren't mentioned at all, rather they shove the random black guy and the new "cultrally appropriate" VA's in our faces the entire season. Also half the season is about Connie being poly. And no I'm not joking.
>>149696846On episode 5 they have a car dealer doing Buck's voice but it isn't him
>>149695059I'm assuming they tied Mike Judge to a chair so he couldn't supervise this show because holy hell he would never let this happen.
First episode in, I actually don't hate it so far.

>What's old gun flavor?
>Ask Bill, he's the only one who put a gun in his mouth.
If anything, this might end up being a mildly adequate season.
>>149695059Yuck, I'm out. Why even hire someone like this for a KoTH reboot?
>>149697468FFTs and SJWs have no business in entertainment
>>149695238>>Hank and Peggy are flummoxed upon their return to the U.S. by rideshare etiquette, all-gender restrooms and people being โcanceled.โThere is literally an episode about him dealing with having an internet mob attack him in the original series...
