>The animation is so iconic it overshadows the rest of the film in people’s minds
Any other cases like this?

The Star Wars Holiday Special maybe? It's a well known god-awful piece of shit, but was watched by millions and the only entertaining part of it was the cartoon that introduced Boba Fett and made him cool before he even appeared in a movie. It basically laid the groundwork for everything to do with Mandalorians up to the present day.

Pretty much ever since the movie came out, I was originally introduced to it myself because of someone completely sperging out about the animation in Goodbye Blue Sky and The Trial.

To be fair the animation is really really fucking good while the actual subject matter of the movie is just kind of meh with some 70s shock stuff thrown in.

That is because it has not been legal available to view in the USA since the 80s and never had a home release there
So outside the song (because of being on those vhs sing alone videos) the animated segments (from Splash Mountain and again vhs clip films) are the only thing people are actually aware of

That's not entirely true, they reran it in the 90s on Disney Channel with some minor censorship. I was born in 1993 and have clear memories of watching it with my dad.

I'm so glad I never saw it in theaters as a kid. The marketing worked but my parents didn't want to go to the movies at that time and by the time we could go it had stopped screening. Dodged a bullet there.

I can't believe they wouldn't let him see his own fucking movie on opening night.
The movie featuring the aftermath of slavery, and they were still bitchy about it.
He had to be snuck in like a fucking flask.

Anyone who thinks a company gives a shit about them is far too naive and trusting, makes Disney's current diversity act even more laughable.

It feels like there was this minor sub genre in this time period, of mixed 2d animation and live action films where the animation was sometimes almost treated like a special effect rather than a whole separate sequence. Song of the South, Bedknobs a Broomsticks, The Incredible Mr Limpet, Pete’s Dragon, etc. Often it was employed so that a particular cartoon character could interact with the live action cast. It’s actually not that dissimilar to current “live action” movies with CG characters, like Sonic.

And with most of these old movies, the cartoon part is the more memorable. The ONE major exception is Mary Poppins. That had mixed animation sequences, but amazingly the live action characters and scenes were so good that they managed to not get overshadowed by the animation.

They were genuinely experimenting to see if they could use animation to cut back on the cost of particularly expensive effects at the time. It's basically a proto-CG mindset like you're describing, but it didn't last because the special effects industry started to get REALLY good after a while.

It's only controversial to people who have never seen it. The whole movie is nothing but whites and blacks getting along and respecting each other. The blacks aren't subservient to the whites and there's nothing to suggest that the white family owned slaves, let alone that the black characters are their former slaves.

>ummmm it painted an overly-positive and simplified portrayal of the south post slavery?? that's kiiinda problematic????
Literally every children's movie portrays the time period in which it takes place as less dark and fucked up than it really was. Nobody complains about the lack of child brides in Aladdin or human sacrifice in The Emperor's New Groove, because doing so would be retarded.

I watched that entire movie and if anything that dance segment is like a fever dream inserted mid film for no other reason than to flex. I don’t like the term, but that is the sort of thing Nostalgia Critic was talking about when he tried to coin “big lipped aligator moment.”

Its more he didnt really understand what the fuck he was talking about. There's plenty to critique, the symbolism is a sledgehammer and it relies a lot on near disconnected vignettes that more or less are jusr music videos and if the vibes weren't on point it be near incoherent.
Its just his criticisms were bad and near nonsense.
