In the case of the FF is a bit more complicated than that. Even in the comics, while respected, they have a more niche fanbase than titles like Wolverine or Punisher, who have the "cool" factor ingrained in them. FF is more lighthearted, more "nerdy" if you will. I liked the film since I think they captured that tone pretty well, but obviously audiences prefer something with more hype moments and aura. The times they've tried to apply more of an edgyness to the FF, like in DeFalco's run or Ultimate, it lost a big part of it's identity.

Part of the problem is everyone assuming every comic film needs a billion.

Even if they somehow get back on track, they'll never let that happen. Even at it's heyday, the MCU was criticized for having almost all their films feel like they were made in an assembly line.
